Treats Taiyang disease (Taiyang disease) presenting with a knotted and intermittent pulse (Jiedai Mai, a pulse with irregular pauses) and palpitations (Xindongji); as well as Lung萎 (Feiwang, lung atrophy/flaccidity), characterized by copious coughing and expectoration of saliva, and a sensation of discomfort or fluid retention in the heart region. (A pause that recovers spontaneously is called "Knotted" (Jie); one that does not recover spontaneously is called "Intermittent" (Dai), indicating exhaustion of blood and deficiency decline, unable to continue sequentially; palpitations indicate internal deficiency of true Qi. Note: The knotted and intermittent pulse in Taiyang disease differs from that in miscellaneous diseases; this decoction tonifies Qi and Blood to restore the pulse. Deficiency of Lung Qi leads to Feiwei; the fluids supplied upward from the Stomach are entirely transformed into saliva by dryness-heat, hence the copious coughing and expectoration.) Baofan uses it to treat hiccups (Eni).
Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, four liang) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, three liang) Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, three liang) Renshen (Ginseng Root) Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, fried with clam powder, two liang) Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root, one jin) Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba - *Note: Text implies Mahuang/Hemp Seed context but lists Mahuang usually for sweating, here likely Huomaren/Hemp Seed based on formula composition, but text says 'Ma' then cuts off. Assuming standard Zhi Gancao Tang ingredients: Huomaren/Hemp Seed*) Dazao (Jujube Fruit, twelve pieces) Qingjiu (Clear Wine, one sheng).
These are herbs for the Hand-Taiyin and Foot-Taiyin meridians. Renshen, Maidong, Gancao, and Dazao tonify Middle Qi and restore the pulse; Shengdihuang and Ejiao assist Ying-Blood and calm the Heart; Huomaren moistens the five Zang organs' flaccidity. (Yu Jiayan said: This is the sacred prescription of Zhang Zhongjing's Taiyang disease section. Qianjin Yi uses it for Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption); Waitai uses it for Feiwei. Ultimately, what diseases does this original formula treat beyond just these two? Waitai selects it to tonify Lung Qi deficiency and moisten Lung Metal dryness. Regarding Guizhi being acrid and hot, it seems inappropriate; however, Guizhi can unblock Ying and Wei, distribute fluids, so that Lung Qi can transport saliva downward gradually, which is crucial, hence it treats the sensation of discomfort in the heart region. Yuji Wei Yi states: Feiwei such as long-term cough with hoarseness or hemoptysis belongs to severe Yin deficiency with fire; expectorating saliva without cough or thirst, accompanied by enuresis and frequent urination, indicates Upper deficiency failing to control Lower, i.e., Cold in the Lung, causing dizziness and excessive saliva, treated with Zhi Gancao Ganjiang Tang to warm it; Feiwei with copious saliva and heart discomfort is treated with Zhi Gancao Tang, which tonifies deficiency consumption, differing from tonifying Yin deficiency with fire, thus Lung...)
(Jin Gui Yao Lue)
Treats Fire pathogen causing Qi rebellion ascending, with difficulty in the throat (The discussion states: To stop rebellion and direct Qi downward, this decoction governs.)
Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, seven sheng) Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, one sheng) Renshen (Ginseng Root, three liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, two liang) Dazao (Jujube Fruit, twelve pieces) Jingmi (Rice Grain, three he).
These are herbs for the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach meridian. Yu Jiayan said: This is a syndrome of dryness and depletion of fluids in the Stomach with defluxion of deficient fire; using cold-cooling herbs causes the fire to rise further; Gan... actually skillfully utilizes the efficacy of Banxia, achieving wonders unprecedented in ancient and modern times (Note: Banxia is also a Spleen-Stomach herb, capable of drying and moistening; it dries because it moves water, and due to its acrid taste...)
