Treats phlegm-fluid retention in the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner), causing pain in both arms (This is because water-fluids are latent within, stagnating in the Middle Jiao. The Spleen governs the four limbs; when Spleen Qi stagnates and fails to descend, it attacks the arms upwards. The pulse presenting as deep and fine indicates this condition).
Banxia Qu (Prepared Pinellia Paste) (2 liang), Fuling (Poria) (1 liang, mixed with milk and stir-fried), Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit) (5 qian, stir-fried with bran), Fenghua Xiao (Weathered Mirabilite) (2.5 qian. If weathered mirabilite is difficult to prepare at once, one may sprinkle Puxiao (Mirabilite) on a plate, wait until it dissolves into water, place it in a windy spot to dry, forming crystals similar to Mangxiao (Mirabilite Prunatum), which can be scraped off for use). Form pills with ginger juice paste, take with ginger decoction.
These are herbs acting on the Foot-Taiyin (Spleen) and Foot-Yangming (Stomach) meridians. Banxia dries dampness, Fuling leaches out water, Zhike moves Qi, Fenghua Xiao softens hardness and removes tough phlegm, Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) counteracts the toxicity of Banxia and eliminates phlegm, allowing phlegm to move and Qi to flow freely, thus arm pain ceases naturally. (Yu Jiayan said: Although there are many drugs for treating phlegm, this formula is very effective. When phlegm-fluid flows into the four limbs, it causes soreness and pain in the shoulders and back, and weakness in the hands. If mistaken for Wind pathogen, the treatment would be incorrect. One should use Daotan Tang (Great Phlegm-Resolving Decoction) added with Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) and Jianghuang (Curcumae Longae Rhizoma), each 5 fen; for mild cases, use Zhimi Fuling Wan.)
(Also known as Miaoying Wan. From *San Yin Fang*)
Treats sudden onset of pulling and burning pain in the chest, back, hands, feet, waist, neck, and joints, with pain migrating unpredictably; or cold numbness in hands and feet, and obstruction of Qi and pulses. This is due to phlegm-saliva residing above and below the chest and diaphragm. Mistaking it for paralysis is incorrect.
Gansui (Core removed), Daji (Periderm removed), Baijiez (White Mustard Seed), in equal proportions. Grind into powder, form pills with paste. Take 5 to 7 pills, up to 10 pills, with ginger decoction before going to bed.
Jia, Yanhusuo
These are herbs acting on the Hand-Foot Taiyang and Hand-Foot Taiyin meridians (Modified from Shizao Tang, following the principle of moving water, yet it is a harsh agent). Li Shizhen said: Phlegm-saliva is a substance that ascends and descends with Qi, reaching everywhere. Entering the Heart, it confuses the spirit causing epilepsy; entering the Lung, it blocks orifices causing wheezing, coughing, and coldness in the back; entering the Liver, it causes epigastric pain, dry heaving, and alternating chills and fever; entering the collaterals, it causes numbness and pain; entering the sinews and bones, it causes pulling and burning pain; entering the skin and flesh, it causes scrofula and carbuncles. Chen Wuzhe in *San Yin Fang* uses Kongxian Dan (Phlegm-Saliva Controlling Elixir) as the primary treatment for all these, achieving remarkable effects. This is the fundamental method for treating phlegm. The root of phlegm is water and dampness; encountering Qi and Fire, it condenses into phlegm. Daji can drain water-dampness from the Zang-Fu organs, Gansui can circulate water-dampness through the meridians and vessels (reaching directly where water-Qi has condensed), using attack and resolution as its function; Baijiez can dissipate phlegm-Qi in the subcutaneous tissue and membranes. Only those who skillfully use...
