Treats phlegm generated by excessive alcohol consumption and improper diet, leading to distension and oppression in the chest and diaphragm, as well as coughing at dawn (Wugeng). This is because excessive drinking causes Spleen dampness; consuming too much spicy, hot, or greasy food can all generate phlegm; phlegm obstructs the chest and diaphragm.
Banxia (Ginger-processed Pinellia Rhizome) [Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Alumine et Zingibere] (1 jin), Danshen (Arisaema with Bile) [Arisaema Cum Bove], Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel) [Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride], Chenpi (Tangerine Peel without White Pith) [Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium] (remove white pith), Laifuzi (Radish Seed) [Raphani Semen] (used raw), Suzi (Perilla Seed) [Perillae Fructus] (select those that sink in water, stir-fried), Shanzhizi (Gardenia Fruit) [Gardeniae Fructus] (1 liang). Mix with Ginger Juice [Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens Sucus], steam until Danshen has no white spots inside, remove Gleditsia Sinensis Pod [Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus] and fresh ginger, slice, and dry together.
This formula targets the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Phlegm arises from dampness, so Banxia and Nanxing are used to dry dampness; phlegm rises with Qi, so Suzi, Laifuzi, and Xingren are used to descend Qi. Maiya [Leonuri Fructus] is used to strengthen the Spleen and dry dampness. For cough caused by rebellious Qi...
Treats cough caused by phlegm-dampness and rebellious Qi. (When the Lung is injured by Fire, Qi rebels upward causing cough; when the Spleen retains dampness, it generates phlegm causing sputum/cough. Although diseases differ among the Five Zang and Six Fu organs, the key lies in the Lung, as the Lung is the canopy of the five Zang organs, connects downward to the Bladder, extends outward to the skin and hair, governs Qi, and controls voice. The general principle is: new-onset cough... When illness occurs at the appropriate season, it may transmit according to the season. There are exogenous causes: the Lung governs the skin and hair, so Wind-Cold, Summerheat, and Dampness pathogens enter through the skin and hair, transmitting internally to the Zang and Fu organs to cause cough. There are endogenous causes: Seven Emotions and dietary irregularities cause internal injury, leading to pathogenic Qi rebelling upward. Since the Lung is the pathway for Qi entry and exit, pathogenic Qi from the five Zang organs steams upward into the Lung to cause cough. However, not all Wind-Cold, Summerheat, and Dampness invasions result in cough; if the pathogen is heavy, it does not remain in the skin and hair but directly injures the Zang and Fu organs, resulting in Cold Damage [Shanghan] and Warm Heat diseases. Similarly, not all emotional disturbances cause cough; if the disease is superficial, it remains in its original organ and has not transmitted to the Lung. Therefore, in Cold Damage, the presence of cough indicates a lighter condition, whereas cough from emotions or dietary issues must persist for a long time before manifesting fully).
Xingren (Apricot Seed) [Armeniacae Semen Amarum] (remove skin and tips), Beimu (Fritillary Bulb) [Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus], Fuling (Poria) [Poria], Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) [Platycodi Radix], Gancao (Licorice Root) [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma], Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry) [Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus], Juhong (Aged Tangerine Peel) [Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum] (0.5 qian). Add fresh ginger for decoction, take after meals. To clear and descend, add Sangbaipi [Mori Cortex], Zhizi [Gardeniae Fructus], Huangqin [Scutellariae Radix]; in windy winters, add Gualou [Trichosanthis Fructus], Haishi [Pumex]; for food stagnation, add Maiya [Hordei Fructus Germinatus]; for morning cough, add Tiandong [Asparagi Radix]; for chronic cough with Lung deficiency, add Dihuang [Rehmanniae Radix], Zhimu [Anemarrhenae Rhizoma], Baipo [Phellodendri Cortex]; Zi Su Zi descends and consolidates.
This is a formula for the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, a general agent for treating Lung disorders. Xingren releases the muscle layer and disperses cold, descends Qi and moistens dryness; Beimu clears fire and dissipates nodules, moistens the Lung and transforms phlegm; Wuweizi... can astringe and descend Qi.
