Dietary injury results in a rapid and slippery pulse at the Qi Kou (radial artery at the wrist); labor fatigue injury results in a large and weak spleen pulse.
If diet is regulated, the five internal organs benefit; how could it cause injury? Injury occurs due to overeating, leading to food stagnation and indigestion, manifesting as a rapid and slippery pulse at the Qi Kou. A rapid pulse indicates impaired transportation and transformation, while a slippery pulse indicates the presence of fluid retention and undigested matter stagnating in the stomach. The appearance of this rapid-slippery pulse at the Qi Kou is because the Qi Kou is located just anterior to the Right Guan position corresponding to the Spleen and Stomach. (Treatment should involve promoting digestion and resolving stagnation, such as using Zhi Zhu Dao Zhi Wan (Immature Bitter Orange and Atractylodes Detoxifying Pill), Bao He Wan (Preserve Harmony Pill), Jie Gu Zhi Zhu Wan (Zhang Congzheng's Immature Bitter Orange and Atractylodes Pill), Qu Zhi Zhu Wan (Malt Immature Bitter Orange and Atractylodes Pill), or Ge Hua Jie Xing Tang (Kudzu Flower Decoction for Resolving Intoxication).)
Movement generates Yang; the body should not remain idle for long. Mr. Li Dongyuan stated after discussing the Sheng Yang Yi Wei Tang (Decoction to Raise Yang and Benefit the Stomach): "Slight physical activity allows the Stomach Qi to transport and ascend along with the medicinal action," which embodies the principle that movement generates Yang. Furthermore, the *Su Wen: Shanggu Tianzhen Lun* states: "Do not exert yourself improperly," implying that work is necessary but should not be excessive. It merely advises slight exertion without overexertion or reckless waste of essence. If one is agitated and overworks, externally there is bodily fatigue, and internally the Spleen is injured. The Spleen Earth combines with muscles and governs the four limbs. It pairs with the Yangming Stomach organ to receive and digest food and water, fermenting refined essences to irrigate the other four Zang organs, serving as the source of Qi and Yang generation in the human body. Overwork causes frequent limb movement and action, scattering Yang Qi. Everywhere there is Spleen Qi response, there is also Spleen Qi injury. Thus, the Spleen pulse appears both large and weak: Qi scattering makes it large, while Qi depletion makes it weak. (Treatment should use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Decoction to Supplement the Middle and Enrich the Qi).)
**Zhi Zhu Dao Zhi Wan (Immature Bitter Orange and Atractylodes Detoxifying Pill)** (Li Dongyuan): Treats痞满 (epigastric fullness/stagnation) and discomfort caused by consuming damp-heat-inducing foods that fail to transform promptly.
Ingredients: Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Zhu (Atractodis Rhizoma), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (each 3 qian), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (1 qian), Zhi Shi (Immaturi Citri Fructus) (bran-fried, pith removed), Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven) (fried, each 5 qian), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (roasted, 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder, mix with steamed bread dough soaked in decoction to form pills. Take 50 pills with warm water well after meals.
**Danxi Baohe Wan (Preserve Harmony Pill)** (See Chapter 17)
**Jiegu Zhi Zhu Wan (Zhang Congzheng's Immature Bitter Orange and Atractylodes Pill)** (See Chapter 17)
**Qu Zhi Zhu Wan (Malt Immature Bitter Orange and Atractylodes Pill)** (See Chapter 20)
**Dongyuan Ge Hua Jie Xing Tang (Kudzu Flower Decoction for Resolving Intoxication)**: Treats symptoms from excessive alcohol consumption, including vomiting with phlegm reversal, mental restlessness, chest and diaphragm oppression, trembling of hands and feet, reduced appetite, and difficult urination.
Ingredients: Qing Pi (Tangerine Peel pericarp) (pith removed, 3 qian), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (0.5 qian), Ju Hong (Tangerine Peel exocarp), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Bai Fu Ling (Poria) (each 1.5 qian), Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven) (fried), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractodis Rhizoma) (each 2 qian), Bai Dou Kou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Ge Hua (Puerariae Flos), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) (each 5 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into an extremely fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with warm water. Once a slight sweat is achieved, the alcohol illness will resolve. This is a remedy of last resort; one must not rely on it to indulge in drinking and damage Yuan Qi. Those suffering from alcoholism should reflect on this.
**Dongyuan Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Decoction to Supplement the Middle and Enrich the Qi)**: Treats excessive labor and irregular diet leading to limb fatigue, dry mouth, body heat, steaming heat in palms while backs of hands remain cool, occasional headache, slight aversion to wind and cold, spontaneous sweating. Or shortness of breath with panting, body heat with irritability. Pulse may be flooding and forceless, or faint, thin, and weak, or only the Right pulse is deficient and large. Indicated for deficiency of Middle Qi failing to control blood, or improper use of purgatives due to Middle Qi insufficiency, or malaria/dysentery caused by dietary and labor fatigue, chronic non-healing due to Spleen-Stomach Qi deficiency, loose interstices prone to Wind-Cold invasion causing persistent cough from minor pathogens affecting the Lung, sinking of Yuan Qi due to prolonged illness, failure of Yuan Qi to rise due to fright, weakness preventing tolerance of diaphoretic treatments for Wind-Cold, post-coital labor-induced colds, or labor-induced colds followed by intercourse, dizziness/vertigo from failing Yang rising, forehead preference for warmth with gradual improvement, etc. Regardless of internal or external conditions, if determined to be caused by labor/fatigue, use this as the primary formula. Its therapeutic method nourishes Stomach Qi in the body and promotes the ascending function of Spring and Summer. It also enables Spleen Earth to generate Lung Metal, serving as a source-nourishing agent for Liver, Heart, Spleen, and Lung.
Ingredients: Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (1 qian if severe/feverish), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (0.3 qian, remove if coughing), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (0.5 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (wine-processed), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (each 0.3 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractodis Rhizoma) (0.5 qian).
(Xue Xinpu's common prescription: Huang Qi, Ren Shen, Bai Zhu each 1.5 qian; Dang Gui 1 qian; Chen Pi 0.7 qian; Chai Hu, Sheng Ma each 0.5 qian.)
Add two cups of water, one jujube, and one slice of ginger. Decoct until one cup remains. Adjust water volume based on Qi deficiency or excess. Strain and take slightly warm well after meals. For severe cases, recovery occurs within no more than two doses.
