Chen Keda, a native of Xinghua who served as the Prefect of Zhaoqing, suddenly developed a swelling under his ribs, resembling an abscess or boil. Within moments, it swelled to the size of a bowl. Those knowledgeable in medicine stated that this was caused by "Tiaosheng Du" (poison induced by consuming improperly prepared raw meat/fish). Waiting until the fifth watch (early morning), he was instructed to chew mung beans thoroughly; if they tasted sweet, it indicated the condition was treatable, which proved true. Subsequently, Chuan Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) was pounded into a fine powder, mixed with cold boiled water, and two qian were taken orally. This led to severe diarrhea, expelling several stalks of raw green onions complete with roots. The swelling then subsided. He subsequently decocted Pingwei San (Regulate the Stomach Powder) to harmonize the spleen and stomach, accompanied by dietary management such as drinking white rice porridge, after which no other sequelae occurred.
Furthermore, the wife of Kang Cai, a commoner from Leizhou, was subjected to the "Tiaosheng" sorcery by a barbarian shaman named Lin Gongrong using chicken meat. Coincidentally, a merchant named Yang Yi, skilled in medicine, administered medication to her. Shortly after taking the medicine, she vomited a mass of accumulated flesh. Upon dissection, living flesh was found within the fascia, already formed into the shape of a chicken, with head, tail, beak, and wings resembling the original. Kang Cai lodged a complaint with the prefecture. The authorities arrested Lin Gongrong and summoned Yang Yi to detail the symptoms and treatment protocol. Yang Yi’s exposition was roughly as follows: Consumption of fish, meat, fruits, vegetables, soups, or tea can lead to poisoning via "Tiaosheng." Initially, slight pain is felt in the chest and abdomen; the next day, it intensifies with twisting and stabbing sensations. After ten days, the entity grows and becomes mobile. If the toxin moves upward, chest pain occurs; if downward, abdominal pain ensues. Prolonged accumulation leads to emaciation and debility, which are the signs. If the toxin is located above the diaphragm, emesis is used to remove it: one cup of hot tea is mixed with half a qian of Danfan (Alum); once dissolved, drink quickly. After a while, stimulate the throat with a chicken feather to induce vomiting and expel the toxin. If the toxin is below the diaphragm, purgation is used: send down two qian of Yujin (Radix Curcumae) powder with rice gruel, causing the toxin to be expelled through the bowels. Thereafter, select Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) and Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), each half liang, grind into powder, mix with half sheng of wine without ash, place in a bottle, and simmer slowly over low heat for about half a day. When ready, take warm, one zhan daily, stopping after five days. Afterwards, alcohol consumption may resume as usual. (From Ding Zhi)
Chen Zhailang, a native of Anji, Huzhou, drank two mouthfuls of stream water while walking in spring due to thirst. Several days later, he felt slight pain in the heart and abdomen, which worsened over time despite medication. The physician diagnosed that the heart and spleen had been poisoned, with significant damage to the heart pulse. Zhailang replied, "Last year, while walking in spring and thirsty, I drank stream water and contracted this illness." The physician said, "You drank 'Shejiao Shui' (water contaminated by snake secretions during mating). Snake waste fell into the stream, and the snake has formed inside your abdomen, feeding on your heart, causing pain." Consequently, Xionghuang (Realgar) was mixed with water and ingested. Indeed, several red snakes capable of crawling were excreted. (From Mingyi Lu)
To treat spider bites resulting in silk-like growths on the body, simply drinking Yang Ru (Goat Milk) is curative. In the tenth year of the Zhenyuan era, Cui Yuanwai Congzhi reported witnessing someone bitten by a spider whose abdomen swelled to the size of a pregnant woman's. His family abandoned him, and he begged on the streets. A monk encountered him and taught him to drink goat milk. Within a few days, he recovered. (From Bencao)
