Yu Chang’s Note: Various qi stagnations belonging to the lung are due to lung dryness. However, ancient and modern formulas for treating qi stagnation use acrid and aromatic qi-moving herbs, with not a single formula treating lung dryness. Various flaccidity, wheezing, and vomiting syndromes belonging to the upper jiao are also due to lung dryness. Yet, ancient and modern treatments attribute flaccidity and vomiting to the Yangming channel, and wheezing to the lung; thus, vomiting and flaccidity belong to the middle and lower jiao, while only wheezing belongs to the upper jiao. Therefore, among thousands of formulas, none address lung dryness. Even when wheezing belongs to the lung, treatment is either exterior-releasing or purging, either moving qi or draining qi. Occasionally, one or two use moistening agents, but they do not grasp the principle. In summary, the Six Qi in *Neijing* missed "Autumn injury by dryness," mistaking late summer dampness for autumn dryness. Later generations dared not change this view, ignoring this qi. Even if some knew to treat dryness, their medication was chaotic. Like catching flying insects, there was no fixed method shown to people. Now I propose this formula, naming it Qing Zao Jiu Fei Tang (Clearing Dryness and Saving Lung Decoction), primarily focusing on stomach qi, as stomach earth is the mother of lung metal. Tian Men Dong (Radix Asparagi), although able to protect the lung, is bitter and causes qi stagnation, potentially harming the stomach and obstructing phlegm, so it is not used. Zhi Mu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) can nourish kidney water and clear lung metal, but is also not used due to its bitterness. Bitter-cold fire-descending drugs, which are standard treatments, are especially contraindicated. When lung metal reaches dryness, the remaining yin qi is merely a thread. If one further uses bitter-cold drugs to drain qi and harm the stomach, can the person still have vitality? Indeed, by imitating and modifying this formula to save lung dryness and transform various syndromes, like watering scorched earth or extinguishing a fire, without tiring of frequency, relief may be achieved.
