The damp-heat and fire of the Kidney and Sanjiao (Triple Burner, a fu-organ responsible for governing qi and unblocking water passages) ascend, causing obstruction and blockage of the qi vessels in the ear. Alternatively, dryness and itching may persist for days, followed by exceptional pain. Initially, small red fleshy growths appear, gradually filling the ear canal, and even protruding outside the ear, occasionally discharging foul-smelling bloody fluid. This condition is named Ear Hemorrhoid (Er Zhi). It is just like fungi growing on hot, steaming wet ground. It is advisable to use acupuncture to drain the dirty blood and fluid, apply Sand San (Sand Powder, formula see later) externally, and internally administer Longdan Xiegan Tang (Gentian Liver-Draining Decoction, formula see later).
The nose is the orifice of the Lung; atmospheric qi connects with the Lung meridian through the nose. If heat from the Gallbladder transfers to the brain, it causes a pungent sensation in the forehead and Bi Yuan (Nasal Sinusitis/Orifice Disorder, characterized by turbid nasal discharge). This occurs when external wind-cold invades the area of the Naohu acupoint, accumulates over time, transforms into heat, and generates hemorrhoids, resulting in loss of smell, and in severe cases, outward protrusion. First, puncture the lesion with acupuncture, then soak cotton in Sand San and pack it into the nose. Repeat once every five days, allowing it to gradually transform into fluid and dissipate. This is akin to coal forming from upward-rising furnace fire. Internally administer Lingyangjiao San (Antelope Horn Powder, formula see later) to prevent facial redness and swelling, and the spreading of fire pathogenic factors. If clear mucus flows from the nose, it indicates Cold of the Brain; treatment should focus on warming and dispersing. If it affects only half of the nose, it is curable; however, if it arises from Bi Yuan, it is difficult to completely eliminate.
In individuals with deficient and weak constitutions who have undergone excessive hardship, or those whose qi and blood are insufficient after illness without full recovery: The Lung governs Qi, and the Spleen controls Blood. When Lung Qi is deficient, it fails to protect the exterior; when Spleen Qi is deficient, Blood loses its containment within the middle jiao. If the Yin collaterals are injured, forcing blood to overflow upwards and exit through the clear pathways (respiratory tract), administer Bufei Yipi Yin (Lung-Nourishing and Spleen-Benefiting Drink, formula see later); two doses will suffice for recovery.
Seasonal pestilential qi (highly contagious pathogenic factors) stagnates in the Gallbladder and Stomach meridians, causing non-firm swelling below the ear, which may shift from left to right or right to left. Externally, apply Qingliang Gaoyao (Cooling Plaster); internally, administer Puji Xiaodu Yin (Universal Relief Detoxification Drink, formula see later). If heat transforms into pus, treat according to the methods for Carbuncles and Ulcers. Mistaken use of fire needles will inevitably cause terrifying redness and swelling. If phlegm swelling occurs at the root of the ear, after several days it usually becomes hard and large, unable to shift side to side.
Bi (Obstruction Syndrome) refers to blockage. External invasion by wind, cold, and dampness leads to the closure of meridians and collaterals, depriving the four extremities of nourishment, resulting in numbness and flaccidity of the hands and feet, and generalized soreness and pain. Some cases arise from labor injuring muscles and bones; some from sitting or lying on wet ground; some from immersion in cold water; some from exposure to rain and snow. All such cases benefit from repeated acupuncture and moxibustion, regular internal consumption of wine that dispels wind-dampness and activates blood vessels, and frequent application of plasters to painful areas. This is a lingering disease; there are cases where treatment fails, leading to permanent disability. The pulse in Bi syndrome is typically deep, slow, or choppy; differentiation must be clarified first.
