Formula 31: Pine Resin Plaster, indicated for carbuncles and sores with swelling. (Methods for refining pine resin and harvesting pine resin are appended.)
Ingredients: Pine resin (2 jin, refined), animal fat (3 liang), Asari Radix (Xi Xin) (0.5 liang), Phellodendri Cortex (Huang Bo), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Xiong), Akebiae Caulis (Bai Lian), Paeoniae Radix (Shao Yao), Herba Pogostemonis (Mang Cao), Beeswite (Bai La), [Unclear/Yellow herb], Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huang Lian), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Da Huang), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fang Feng) (each 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: The above sixteen ingredients are chopped. First, heat a copper pot over fire until hot, wipe the inner walls with wax to remove moisture. Chop the pine resin and place it in the pot, then add the animal fat. Once fully melted, add the remaining herbs. Stir and blend with a bamboo spatula. Simmer over low heat while stirring vigorously without interruption. After ten boils, remove from heat; when boiling ceases, reheat. Prepare ten piles of wet earth in advance. Place each batch on one pile; after processing through all ten piles, the preparation is complete. While hot, pour the liquid onto fresh coarse cloth, apply heat around the edges, and squeeze/filter through a cloth bag to remove dregs. Scoop the clarified liquid, spread it on paper, cut to the size of the lesion, and apply as a plaster. Change every two hours (one zhi shi). This method is somewhat difficult and requires careful attention to succeed.
Method for Refining Pine Resin:
Take three sheng of hemp seeds, grind them finely, and wash with three sheng of water. Squeeze the juice out using raw cloth to remove dregs. Take two sheng of pine resin, boil with three and a half sheng of water until completely melted. While hot, squeeze the resin out through fresh cloth into the hemp juice. Wait until slightly cool, then take the pine resin and pull/stretch it repeatedly until it turns white. Weigh according to standard measures.
Method for Harvesting Pine Resin:
Select exposed roots of large pine trees in deep mountains; naturally flowing white viscous resin is best. Resin that has turned black at the edges due to fire burning is unsuitable. Alternatively, during the intense heat of May or June, make incisions on the roots and collect the exudate after three to five days. For larger quantities, break more roots to harvest.
Formula 2: Shengma Poultice, indicated for carbuncles and sores.
Ingredients: Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Sheng Ma), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Da Huang), [Unclear/Yellow herb], Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Xiong), Dragon Bone (Long Gu), Bletillae Rhizoma (Bai Ji) (each 1 liang), Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin) (6 liang), Akebiae Caulis (Bai Lian), Ostrea Concha (Mu Li, calcined), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao) (each 0.5 liang).
Preparation and Administration: The above ten ingredients are crushed and sieved into a powder. Mix with honey to form a paste-like consistency. Apply onto cloth and poultice onto the carbuncle. Replace when dry.
Formula 3: Formula for Relieving Mild Pain and Promoting Resolution.
Ingredients: [Unclear/Yellow herb], Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Qing Mu Xiang), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhi Zi), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Gan Di Huang), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Sheng Ma), Dragon Bone (Long Gu), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Da Huang), Phellodendri Cortex (Huang Bo), Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin), Ephedrae Herba (Ma Huang), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huang Lian), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Xiong), Rhinocerotis Cornu (Sheng Xi, powdered), Akebiae Caulis (Bai Lian), Antilopis Cornu (Ling Yang Jiao).
Preparation and Administration: The above fifteen ingredients are mixed in equal parts, crushed, and sieved into a powder. Mix with vinegar to form a paste-like consistency. Apply onto old cloth. Leave an opening the size of a small bean to vent heat. Replace when dry; discontinue when healed.
