Book: Qianjin Yi Fang (Supplement to the Thousand Golden Formulas)
Author: Sun Simiao
Dynasty: Tang Dynasty, Kaiyao 2nd Year
Chapter: Ji Po's Treatment of Malignant Diseases Part 3 (1/2)
Category: Formula
Translation:
There are eleven formulas and seven treatises.
The treatise states: There are four hundred types of Ji Feng (a severe dermatological and neurological disease, similar to leprosy), but in summary, they do not exceed five types, which are governed by the Five Winds. What are the Five Winds? First is Yellow Wind, second is Green Wind, third is White Wind, fourth is Red Wind, and fifth is Black Wind. These five winds correspond to the five Zang organs, hence called the Five Winds. The Five Winds generate five types of worms: Yellow Wind generates Yellow Worms, Green Wind generates Green Worms, White Wind generates White Worms, Red Wind generates Red Worms, and Black Wind generates Black Worms. These five types of worms devour the human Zang organs. If they devour the Spleen, the voice changes and becomes scattered; if they devour the Liver, eyebrows and eyelashes fall out; if they devour the Heart, sores appear all over the body; if they devour the Lungs, the nasal bridge collapses and polyps grow in the nose; if they devour the Kidneys, there is tinnitus buzzing like car wheels or drumbeats; if they devour the skin, the skin becomes hard and numb; if they devour the tendons, limbs and joints degenerate. The Five Winds combine with the five Zang organs, and the worms multiply excessively, entering the bone marrow, moving freely, damaging the human body, called Ji Feng. Ji Feng is the root of Leprosy (leprosy-like diseases). When the disease first begins, some feel like needle pricks, called Ci Feng (Needle Wind); some feel like insects crawling, called You Feng (Wandering Wind); the whole body convulses and moves, called Feng (text possibly missing a character, likely referring to Convulsive Wind); feeling no pain or itch, called Wan Feng (Stubborn Wind); muscles bulge like peach, plum, or small date pits, starting from the head and face, called Shun Feng (Smooth Wind); starting from both feet, called Ni Feng (Reverse Wind); resembling linked coins or balls, mottled with red, white, green, and black, called KT Feng (transliteration of original special character); or the whole body develops sores, resembling scabies or tinea, fish scales, elm seeds, or coin holes, itching or painful, flowing with yellow fluid, limbs and joints rotting into pus and blood, or not itching or painful, appearing and disappearing intermittently, colors changing unpredictably among green, yellow, red, white, and black. The cause of onset is due to the interaction of cold and heat qi, flowing into the five Zang organs, penetrating the bone marrow, excessive physical exertion, dietary irregularities, immoderate sexual activity, deficiency and exhaustion, profuse sweating, leading to accumulated heat, wind-heat penetrating the five Zang organs, impure diet, causing excessive worm generation, devouring the five Zang organs, bone marrow, skin, flesh, tendons, and joints. Over time, the body disintegrates, called Lai Feng (Leprosy Wind). Therefore, it is said: To treat it, first administer Awei Leiwan San (Asafoetida and Opiate Pill Powder) to expel the worms, observe their color (green, yellow, red, white, or black), and then administer treatment. There will surely be no failure. The Hu people call Kamala Disease (Kamala, Sanskrit transliteration for leprosy), and worldly doctors have no effective method, claiming it is "Zheng Bao" (karmic retribution), which is incorrect. Those who contract this disease often become immortals; many who get this illness abandon their families and wealth to enter mountains, and thus recover and become immortals. Nowadays, patients who leave their wives and extended families recover without exception.
Formula for Awei Leiwan San (Asafoetida and Opiate Pill Powder):
Awei (Asafoetida), Zi Leiwan (Purple Opiate Pill), Xionghuang (Realgar), Zhi Shiyin (Fluorite), Zhusha (Cinnabar), Huashi (Talcum), Shidan (Chalcanthite), Dansha (Cinnabar), Lu (Reed Rhizome), Bailian (White Peony Root), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn) [Note: Rhino horn is banned; historically used].
Take the above eleven ingredients, pound and sieve into powder. Take one qianbi (ancient measure) on an empty stomach, mix with two he of clear wine and drink thoroughly. When very hungry, consume adzuki bean soup; do not eat too much, stop at half-fullness, as overeating delays worm expulsion. Take another dose on an empty stomach in the late afternoon, same dosage. If urination feels like strangury, take medicine immediately regardless of time, same dosage. Eat when very hungry. Observe urine in a basin; worms exit via urine. Expulsion may occur on the same day, after two to three days, four to five days, or even seven days for those taking the medicine. Large worms resemble human fingers, small ones like wheat grains. Quantities expelled vary from three-four to thirty-plus. Yellow worms resemble earth-yellow color; red worms resemble clotted blood/meat; white worms resemble sputum/phlegm, fish brain, or ginger sauce; green worms resemble green vegetation or coriander color; black worms resemble ink, rotten mulberries, or fermented black beans. Worms die upon contact with the medicine and exit via urine or feces, mixed with waste. If black worms are expelled, it indicates Black Wind, which is incurable with current methods. If yellow worms are expelled, it indicates Yellow Wind. Use seven to eight sheng of urine, store in a large jar. Keep the urine warm (like a stove setup). Immerse the body in the urine three times a day, each session lasting as long as cooking two to three dou of rice. If feeling stifled, exit and rest. Eat frequently to avoid hunger-induced weakness. Forty-nine days constitute one full course, until cured. May take one to two years. Avoid sexual intercourse, as it opens meridians and facilitates worm movement, worsening the condition. This is a "Heng Bing" (external pathogenic disease), not "Zheng Bao" (karmic retribution). If green worms are expelled, it indicates Green Wind. Caused mostly by cold wind, worms are green, indicating toxicity from Eastern Wood wind. Green worms should be treated with self-urine, also called Hua Shui, Qing Tang, or Huan Zhong Shui. Dosage: Empty stomach for seven days, six he per dose, taken at dawn. Total not exceeding one sheng. Eat when hungry. Avoid five pungents, pork, chicken, dog, foul food, anger, and sex. By day fourteen, take twice daily, four he each. By day twenty-one, three times daily. By day twenty-eight, take upon worm expulsion. Continue up to one year until cured. Total intake not exceeding one sheng. After one hundred days, reduce frequency to once or twice daily. Consume fragrant soups. Taboos last three years; violation makes cure difficult, compliance ensures permanent recovery. Green Wind is a Heng Bing, not Zheng Bao. White worms indicate White Wind. Red worms indicate Red Wind. Both are treated similarly, rooted in heat, associated with Southern and Western winds, invading Zang organs and bone marrow.
Formula for Kushen Xiaoshi Jiu (Sophora Root and Niter Wine):
Kushen (Sophora Root), Xiaoshi (Niter/Potassium Nitrate), Hao Qingjiu (Good Clear Wine).
Soak Xiaoshi in Qingjiu for fourteen or twenty-one days. Then add Kushen, soak in a wine jar for seven days. Drink slowly. Dosage: Empty stomach, three times daily. First seven days: half an egg-sized portion per dose. After seven days: up to one sheng, more is better for faster cure. Do not induce vomiting. Reduce intake gradually if needed. Red and White Winds will surely heal with this formula. Other types are easier to treat because heat is the root; Kushen clears heat, Xiaoshi eliminates heat and worms. Red and White worms dissolve upon smelling Xiaoshi. For chronic cases (over five years), increase Huang Xiaoshi, wine, and Kushen to three or four liang. Even cases lasting thirty years without nasal collapse or limb loss will heal, provided they are not Black Worms. Strictly avoid sex, anger, heat, sticky foods, five pungents, raw/cold foods, vinegar, dairy, white wine, and meats (pig, fish, chicken, dog, donkey, horse, cow, sheep). This is symptomatic treatment, not addressing karmic roots. For areas of stubborn numbness, apply Da Bai Gao (Great White Ointment) massage three to four times daily. Improvement seen in seven days, or two to three cycles (up to forty-nine days, one major cycle). Itching returns, skin normalizes, then stop. If not healed, continue massage up to three major cycles. Needles, moxibustion, burning, cutting are inferior to massage. Even old scars heal with massage.
Formula for Da Bai Gao (Great White Ointment):
Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala), Qianhu (Peucedanum), Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit) [1 sheng each], Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong) [2 sheng], Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper), Xixin (Asarum) [3 liang each], Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig) [2 liang each], Kujiu (Vinegar) [4 sheng].
Soak herbs in vinegar overnight. Ten jin of non-standard pig lard is boiled in a copper vessel for three boils, lifting and lowering three times, until Baizhi turns yellow. Store in a bottle. Massage affected areas. For generalized suppurating sores, use Da Hei Gao (Great Black Ointment).
Formula for Da Hei Gao (Great Black Ointment):
Wutou (Aconitum Carlemanii), Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong), Xionghuang (Realgar), Hufen (Lead Carbonate), Mufangji (Stephania Tetrandra), Shengma (Cimicifuga), Huanglian (Coptis), Cihuang (Orpiment), Lilu (Veratrum), Fanshi (Alum) [0.5 liang each], Xingren (Apricot Seed, peeled), Badou (Croton Seed) [40 seeds each], Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) [1 fen], Songzhi (Pine Resin), Luafa (Human Hair) [size of chicken eggs].
Pound fifteen ingredients to powder. Fry in two sheng of pig lard until hair dissolves. Apply to sores three times daily. Wash with salt water before application. Keep away from women, children, chickens, and dogs. For lost eyebrows/eyelashes, after 100 days of internal medicine, wash area with Tiejiang (Iron Rust Water) three times daily. Hair regrows quickly after one major cycle.
Wine Soaking Method:
Remove yellow skin from Kushen, slice thin, dry, crush (do not powder). Weigh 30 jin. Use a non-leaking jar holding two hu. Drill a hole in the bottom. Place 20-30 green stones (size of plums/eggs) inside, covering the hole by 2-3 cun. Add Kushen, powdered Xiaoshi, and wine. Have a 13-14 year old boy mix. Seal mouth with 5-6 layers of old paper, cover with small jar, seal with mud. Draw wine from the bottom hole. Drink once or twice daily. Reseal tightly. When wine is low, open top, squeeze residue to extract remaining wine. Store tightly. Same usage as before. Cure rate is high. For chronic cases (10+ years), prepare two batches. Follow rules strictly. Use good wine. Maintain moral integrity (filial piety, righteousness) for faster cure.
Treatise: Kushen is common and highly effective. Huang Xiaoshi (Yellow Niter) comes from Longku. Three types: Yellow, Green, White. Resembles salt/snow. Melts when burned/wet. True niter melts completely. Yellow is best, Green medium, White inferior. Yellow Niter kills internal worms fastest. Green Niter is a divine medicine from Niaochang Country stone pores, natural exudate, extremely smelly, revered by insects/snakes. Kills worms, excellent for heat-wind. Better than White Niter. Resembles glue/honey/taffy. Smells foul. Taoists value it for killing worms. If unavailable, soak in wine for 20 days before adding Kushen.
Treatise: Yellow, Green, White Niter are kings of medicines, kill worms, promote longevity, from Niaochang Country. This formula is from Ji Po's Medical Treatise on Ji Feng. Translated by Huang Li San Sui, expanded in 7 volumes. Says: Before taking medicine, recite the "Longevity Talisman" to purge evil qi from organs. Then take medicine for efficacy. Talisman power is miraculous. When preparing medicine, have a boy mix, then place talisman in jar to protect from spirits.
Treatise: Doubt in doctor or medicine renders treatment ineffective. Firm belief ensures miracle. Medicine works according to intent. Doubt causes failure. Prolonged doubt harms; prolonged faith benefits. Doctors say: Take talisman first to purge evil qi, ensuring drug efficacy. Write talisman in cinnabar red, take on empty stomach, then take medicine as described.
[Talisman Image]
Write talisman in cinnabar red.
Take talisman first, then medicine. One talisman suffices. Do not let children, women, livestock, or pets see it.
Treatise: Diseases starting from above are "Shun Bing" (Smooth Disease), easy to treat. Starting from below are "Ni Bing" (Reverse Disease), hard to treat, require double dosage.
Treatise: Diseases in Zang/Bone Marrow require decoctions. Diseases in Skin/Flesh/Meridians can be treated with acupuncture. Decoctions nourish spirit and cure root causes. Acupuncture relieves acute symptoms but may cloud spirit. Decoctions/pills/wines extend life; moxibustion/acupuncture may harm if overused.
Discussion: Many types of Ji include Chong Lai (Worm Leprosy), Jie Lai (Scabies Leprosy), Feng Lai (Wind Leprosy), Jin Lai (Metal Leprosy), Mu Lai (Wood Leprosy), Shui Lai (Water Leprosy), Huo Lai (Fire Leprosy), Tu Lai (Earth Leprosy), Jiu Lai (Alcohol Leprosy), Mian Lai (Face Leprosy). All form Leprosy.
Chong Lai: Sores, pus, hair loss, decay in 3 years, worms like horse tails. Hard to treat, needs added medicine.
Jie Lai: Like tinea, intense itching, becomes severe in 10 years. Needs added medicine.
Feng Lai: Wind enters body,刺痛 in limbs, cold numbness. Untreated, severe in 20 years. Needs added medicine.
