The cause of this syndrome may be due to blood stasis that fails to dissipate after a fall. Or it may be caused by depression leading to blood coagulation and impaired circulation, resulting in the formation of "Blood Drum" (a disease characterized by abdominal masses and distension) in the abdomen. If the principles of syndrome differentiation and treatment are not understood, and methods for treating water retention or qi stagnation are recklessly applied, the harm will be significant. The treatment should focus on eliminating blood stasis and purging turbidity. The prescription is as follows:
*Hirudo* (Leech) 3 qian (stir-fried and ground into powder), *Polyporus Umbellatus* (Leiwan), *Carthamus Tinctorius* (Honghua), *Immature Bitter Orange* (Zhishi), *White Peony Root* (Baishao), and *Achyranthes Bidentata* (Niuxi), each 3 qian; *Peach Kernel* (Taoren) 40 grains (skin and tips removed, crushed); *Angelica Sinensis* (Danggui).
Decoct these herbs in water and take orally. After one dose, more than a dou of bloody stool will be discharged; after a second dose, the blood stasis will be completely cleared, and the patient will recover. After recovery, it is advisable to regulate the condition with formulas that tonify qi and blood; otherwise, there is a risk of developing a syndrome of dryness and depletion (yin-blood exhaustion).
"Hongxiangjiao" (a traditional term referring to swelling and pain in the feet, distinct from modern beriberi) is caused by contracting wind-toxin. Prolonged standing or sitting in damp and cold environments allows heat-dampness and cold-dampness pathogens to enter the meridians. The symptoms begin in the feet, gradually spread to the lower abdomen, and in severe cases, attack upward toward the heart and chest. If not treated urgently, it can lead to death. At the initial stage, apply fresh *Sesamum Indicum* leaves (Huma Ye), crush them, steam them until hot, wrap them thinly around the affected area, and change twice daily until the swelling subsides. In winter, chop and crush *Polygonum Cuspidatum* roots (Shuobi Gen), mix with three parts wine lees and one part root material, steam until hot, and apply as described above; this is effective.
If "Hongxiangjiao" attacks the heart, causing abdominal distension and rapid breathing, the patient will die. Use the following emergency prescription:
*Dysosma Verrucosa* (Wuzhuyu) 3 sheng, *Chaenomeles Speciosa* (Mugua) 2 he, *Areca Seed* (Binglang) 20 pieces, *Bamboo Leaves* (Zhuye) 2 sheng.
Boil the four ingredients in ten dou of water until three sheng of liquid remain. Divide into three doses. If the patient experiences rapid bowel movement, the illness will heal quickly. Avoid raw vegetables, cooked noodles, buckwheat, garlic, and other such foods.
External treatment:
Place one sheng of rice bran in a cauldron, boil to extract a thick decoction, and strain out the dregs. Add one dou of *Zanthoxylum Bungeanum* seeds (Jiaomu), boil for more than ten boils, and soak the feet two or three times. Continue soaking while warm if the liquid cools down, and stop when healed.
*Soybean* (Dadou) 2 sheng (boil in ten dou of water to obtain five sheng of decoction, remove the beans).
*Morus Alba Bark* (Sangbaipi) one handful, *Areca Seed* (Binglang) 27 pieces, *Poria Cocos* (Fuling) 2 liang.
Soak the above three ingredients overnight in the soybean decoction prepared previously. Boil to obtain two sheng of liquid, strain out the dregs. Add two he of wine to the medicine, and take an appropriate amount according to the patient's condition. Avoid vinegar and sour foods.
