Yin and Yang are the pivot and mechanism of Heaven and Earth. The Five Elements (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth) are the beginning and end of Yin and Yang. Without Yin and Yang, Heaven and Earth cannot be formed; without the Five Elements, Yin and Yang cannot function. Therefore, humans are formed by Heaven and Earth but perish due to imbalances in Yin and Yang, arising from the reversal or compliance of the Five Elements.
Heaven and Earth possess Yin and Yang and the Five Elements; humans possess blood vessels and the Zang organs (Solid Organs). The Five Elements refer to Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. The Zang organs refer to the Lung, Liver, Heart, Kidney, and Spleen. Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood, Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, and Earth generates Metal. This is the way of generation, cycling endlessly. The Lung generates the Kidney, the Kidney generates the Liver, the Liver generates the Heart, the Heart generates the Spleen, and the Spleen generates the Lung. They nourish each other above and below without rest. Thus, it is stated in *Jinkui Yaolue: Zhizhen Yao Da Lun*: "The Heart generates Blood; Blood is the mother of flesh." "The Spleen generates flesh; flesh is the residence of Blood." "The Lung governs Qi; Qi is the foundation of bones." "The Kidney corresponds to bones; bones are the root of sinews." "The Liver connects with sinews; sinews are the source of Blood." The Zang organs and the Five Elements mutually support and generate each other, flowing day and night without beginning or end. Compliance brings auspiciousness; violation brings disaster. The principles of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements of Heaven and Earth are contained within humans. One who grasps them can transcend the numbers of Yin and Yang, seize the mechanism of Heaven and Earth, and appreciate the essence of the Five Elements, achieving a state without beginning or end, becoming an immortal who does not die.
Violent storms bring intense heat; clouds and objects fly about. Mornings are dark while evenings are clear; nights are hot while days are cold. It should be cold but is not; it should rain but does not. Water sources dry up, soil crumbles, causing severe drought in the seasons. Grass and trees wither and decay, rivers and streams become depleted and dry. This is the Yang Jue (Yang Reversal/Obstruction) of Heaven and Earth. [In humans:] sudden obstruction and blockage, abrupt panting and shortness of breath, limbs unable to hold themselves, dysfunction of the Fu organs (Hollow Organs), deafness and blindness, dry throat and scorched mouth, sores on the tongue, clear discharge from the nose, red cheeks and vexation, dizziness and heavy head, eyes like fire, whole body feeling like burning. Those who could not do something before suddenly can; those they did not desire before suddenly desire. Climbing high places, singing and laughing, discarding clothes and running wildly, speaking nonsense and妄语 (delirious speech), failing to distinguish between relatives and strangers. Restlessness erupts without limit, drinking water ceaselessly, distension of the chest and diaphragm, fullness and oppression in the abdomen and hypochondrium, back carbuncles with rotting flesh, vexation, ulceration, Xiao Zhong (wasting-thirst syndrome with excessive hunger), food failing to enter the stomach, water failing to pass through the intestines, sudden swelling and bloating, shouting, coma and confusion, loss of consciousness, pain without knowing its location. This is the Yang Jue of humans. Regarding the pulse of Yang Jue: if the pulse is strong upon lifting and pressing, life is possible; if the pulse is absent/extinct, death ensues.
