Human beings receive their endowment from Heaven and rely on Earth. Yang Qi (Yang Energy) assists them, and Yin Qi (Yin Energy) supports them. When Heaven and Earth are in harmony, the human Qi flows smoothly; when Heaven and Earth are disordered, the human Qi becomes obstructed. Therefore, Heaven and Earth have the Four Seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) and the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), with changes of cold and warmth, movement and stillness. The joy of Heaven manifests as rain, its anger as wind, its condensation as frost, and its expansion as a rainbow; this is the constant state of Heaven. Humans have four limbs and five Zang organs (Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lung, Kidney), respiration, wakefulness and sleep, the flow and dispersion of Jing (Essence) and Qi. Behavior manifests as Ying-Wei (Defensive and Nutritive Qi), expansion manifests as Qi mechanism, and emission manifests as voice; this is the constant state of humans. Yang Qi is applied to the form, while Yin Qi carefully guards the Essence. This is the same as Heaven and Earth. If this guardianship is lost, steaming heat will erupt, obstruction will generate cold, condensation will form goiters (thyroid swellings or neck masses), sinking will create carbuncles and sores (purulent infections). Excess leads to panting, deficiency leads to emaciation. These changes appear on the face and are seen in the body. The blockage or patency of Heaven and Earth is exactly like this. Thus, the waxing and waning of the Five Planets (Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Mercury, Venus), the displacement of stars, solar and lunar eclipses, comets, bo-stars, and flying meteors are disasters and anomalies of Heaven and Earth. Irregular cold and warmth indicate stagnation and blockage of Heaven and Earth; rising earth and standing stones are the carbuncles and sores of Heaven and Earth; violent winds and heavy rains are the panting and exhaustion of Heaven and Earth; the drying up of rivers and lakes is the withering and scorching of Heaven and Earth. The wise resolve illness with herbs, rescue the body with acupuncture, transform pathological conditions with Daoist methods, and assist regulation with daily affairs. Thus, there are diseases of the form that can be saved, and disasters of Heaven and Earth that can be removed. Human crises, misfortunes, death, and life are endowed by Heaven and Earth. Diseases of the Yin type come slowly and depart slowly; diseases of the Yang type come quickly and depart quickly. Yang arises from heat, and heat is soothing; Yin arises from cold, and cold causes curling and stiffness. Cold pathogens strike the lower part, heat pathogens strike the upper part, and pathogens from improper diet strike the middle part. Human movement and stillness are rooted in Heaven and Earth. To understand humans, one finds verification in Heaven; to understand Heaven, one must find verification in humans. Heaven combines with humans, and humans model themselves after Heaven. Observing the compliance or rebellion of Heaven and Earth allows one to know the decline or prosperity of humans. Humans have a hundred diseases, diseases have a hundred prognoses, and prognoses have a hundred variations; all arise from the rebellion and compliance of Heaven and Earth Yin and Yang. If one can thoroughly investigate this principle, it would be as if divine.
Heaven is the patriarch of Yang, and Earth is the category of Yin. Yang is the root of life, and Yin is the foundation of death. Among Heaven and Earth, humans are those who assist Yin and Yang. Those who obtain Yang live; those who obtain Yin die. Yang within Yang is called the High True One, and Yin within Yin is called the Nether Ghost. Therefore, those concentrated in Yang have long lives, and those concentrated in Yin have short lives. Those with much heat belong to the main category of Yang, and those with much cold belong to the root of Yin. Yang seeks the upper, and Yin seeks the lower. Yang moves quickly, and Yin moves slowly. Yang's nature is light and clear, and Yin's nature is heavy and turbid. When Yin and Yang are balanced, Heaven and Earth are harmonious, and human Qi is peaceful. When Yin and Yang rebel, Heaven and Earth are blocked, and human Qi becomes reversed. Thus, when Heaven and Earth obtain Yang, they become hot and blazing; when they obtain Yin, they become cold and biting. Yang begins before the Zi hour (11 PM - 1 AM) and ends after midday; Yin begins after midday and ends before the Zi hour. The rise and fall of Yin and Yang each occur at their respective times, starting and ending without rest. If humans can follow this, it is wisdom. The *Jinkui* (Golden Cabinet) states: At the beginning of Autumn, nourish Yang; at the beginning of Spring, nourish Yin. Do not let Yang close externally, do not let Yin be invaded by external fire. Fire emerges from Wood, and Water is born from Metal. Water and Fire mutually assist, seeking each other above and below. If humans follow this, they will never sink or perish. This is what is meant. Alas! How do the foolish understand this principle? Improper conduct leads to self-inflicted disaster. External invasion by Wind, Cold, Summer-heat, and Dampness, and internal damage from hunger, fullness, and labor, ruin the righteous body and consume the righteous spirit, binding the body and announcing death and life. They do not know that there are five signs of death in pulse diagnosis and five signs of life in Qi. The Yin family's pulse is heavy, and the Yang family's pulse is light. Yang disease with a Yin pulse means a short life; Yin disease with a Yang pulse means the disease cannot develop. Yang syndromes involve much speech, while Yin syndromes involve no sound. Much speech is easy to treat; no sound is difficult to recover from. Yang disease is quiet in the morning, and Yin disease is calm at night. The movement of Yin and Yang follows the seasons. Yang deficiency leads to confusion in the evening, and Yin deficiency leads to contention in the morning. Morning and evening intermingle, and Qi becomes reversed and horizontal. The principles of life and death become clear within Yin and Yang. Yin Qi descending but not ascending is called "Severed Collaterals"; Yang Qi ascending but not descending is called "Cut Meridians." Evil in Yin is called Turbid, and evil in Yang is called Clear. Fire arrives at the Kan Door (Kidney), and Water reaches the Li Gate (Heart); when Yin and Yang correspond, peace is achieved. If Yin is insufficient, aid it with the Mother of Water; if Yang is insufficient, assist it with the Essence of Fire. When Yin and Yang are equally assisted, each has its path of ascent. Ascending three cun is called the Divine Path of Yang; descending three cun is called the Ghost Journey of Yin. Yin should often be reduced, and Yang should often be filled. Those in the middle maintain a balance of Yin and Yang. Therefore, Yang within Yang receives titles from Immortals, and Yin within Yin holds names among Underworld Ghosts. Following Yin leads mostly to destruction, while following Yang leads mostly to longevity. Encountering such profound interest, nothing fails to work.
