Human life is sustained by Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) and Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), and the root of human existence lies in Qi. If Qi is harmonious, pathogenic factors cannot interfere with or invade the righteous Qi; if Qi becomes excessive or deficient, various diseases arise from this. Therefore, anger causes Qi to ascend, joy causes Qi to slacken, grief causes Qi to dissipate, fear causes Qi to sink, cold causes Qi to gather and condense, heat causes the Cou Li (skin pores) to open and Qi to leak out, worry causes Qi to become disordered, overexertion causes Qi to be consumed, and contemplation causes Qi to knot. The Classics state: The theories of Nine Qi, Seven Qi, and all discussions on various Qi disorders do not go beyond these principles. Upon examining the pulse, if the Cun Kou (radial artery at the wrist) pulse is deep-hidden, accompanied by rebellious Qi in the chest, this indicates that various Qi are rushing upward into the chest, resulting in edema of the face and dorsum of the feet, and panting. If the pulse is floating and large, it is difficult to treat. If there is Shang Qi (Rebellious Qi) with a restless pulse and panting, the disease belongs to the Lung. When Fei Zhang (Lung Distension) is about to develop into Feng Shui (Wind-Water Edema), sweating will lead to recovery. If the pulse is weak, those whose pulse can hide are likely to survive, while those with a firm and strong pulse are likely to die. If panting is low-pitched and difficult, and the pulse is slippery, survival is possible if the hands and feet are warm. If the pulse is choppy, or if the hands and feet are cold, death ensues; a rapid pulse also indicates death, due to the depletion of the physical form. As for Wu Ji (Five Accumulations), Liu Ju (Six Gatherings), Zheng Jia (Masses and Growths), and Pi Ku (Fixed Lumps), they are all caused by disharmony of Yin and Yang, weakness of the Zang-Fu organs, contraction of Wind pathogens, and the binding of pathogenic factors with the Qi of the Zang-Fu. Fu refers to the Six Fu Organs, and Zang refers to the Five Zang Organs. Zang are Yin, and Fu are Yang. Yang Qi is light, floating, and active; Yin Qi is heavy, sinking, and quiet. Therefore, accumulations in the Five Zang organs manifest without leaving their respective locations, having definite upper and lower boundaries. Ju (Gatherings) and Jia (Growths) are formed by the Six Fu organs; pain has no fixed location and moves up and down without staying. This is generally because the Zang-Fu have contracted pathogens; initially, this does not cause immediate illness, but as the pathogen remains stagnant and does not disperse, Zheng Jia (masses and growths) are formed.
This formula treats all cases of Qi disharmony causing heaviness and oppression in the heart and abdomen, Qi distension in the chest and diaphragm, dysphagia and obstruction, accumulation of cold Qi, occasional attacking of the Spleen and Stomach causing rebellious Qi, loss of appetite, unremitting Huo Luan (Cholera-like syndrome), intestinal slipping and diarrhea, injury from alcohol and food, acid regurgitation and indigestion, and excessive cold Phlegm, with significant efficacy.
