[Chaihu Yinzi (Bupleurum Decoction)] Resolves all types of steaming heat in the muscles and bones. It is indicated for symptoms caused by accumulated heat, alternating chills and fever, rigors due to stored heat, failure to resolve after sweating therapy for Shanghan (Cold Damage), transmission without prior sweating, simultaneous heat in the exterior and interior, dry mouth with irritability and thirst, invasion of exterior heat into the interior where fullness syndromes below are not yet complete, persistence of heat after purgation, recurrence of illness due to residual heat after sweating, irregular menstruation in women, or postpartum conditions presenting with such symptoms. All these are suitable for this prescription.
Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix) [each half tael].
The above seven herbs are cut into coarse pieces. Each dose consists of 4 qian, decocted with one sheng of water and three slices of fresh ginger until reduced to six-tenths. Strain and take warm. For children, divide into three doses. Continue until the disease is cured. Take three times daily; increase dosage if heat is severe.
[Baitu Tang (White Tiger Decoction)] Treats cases where, after profuse sweating from Shanghan, the exterior syndrome has resolved, but there is extreme irritability and thirst in the chest and heart, with a desire to drink water. It is also indicated for situations where, after vomiting or purgation, seven to eight days have passed, pathogenic toxins remain unresolved, heat is knotted internally, causing simultaneous heat in the exterior and interior, occasional aversion to wind, extreme thirst, dry tongue coating, irritability, and a desire to drink several sheng of water. This prescription is suitable.
Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) [seven taels and half], Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [three taels and seven qian and half], Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) [twenty taels].
The above herbs are cut into coarse pieces. Each dose consists of 3 qian, decocted with one and a half sheng of water and thirty grains of Jing Mi (Oryza Sativa Japonica Group). Simmer until reduced to one sheng. Strain and take warm. Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) may be added if necessary. This medicine can be taken after Lixia (Start of Summer) and before Liqiu (Start of Autumn). It should not be taken during spring, after Liqiu, or in patients with blood deficiency.
[Taoren Chengqi Tang (Peach Kernel Decoction to Guide Out Stasis)] Treats heat knotting in the Bladder, where the patient exhibits manic-like behavior. Heat resides in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner) and contends with blood. When blood moves downward, heat exits with it, leading to recovery.
Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [each two taels], Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) [three taels], Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) [two taels, bark removed], Tao Ren (Persicae Semen) [fifty kernels, skin and tips removed].
The Neijing (Classic of Internal Canon) states: "Sweet flavors moderate tension; pungent flavors disperse." For urgency and knotting in the lower abdomen, the sweetness of Tao Ren moderates it. For blood stasis in the Lower Jiao, the pungency of Gui Zhi disperses it. For excessive heat, cold-natured herbs are used to counteract it. When intense heat contends with blood, add these two ingredients to Tiaowei Chengqi Tang (Regulate the Stomach Decoction to Guide Out Stasis).
The above herbs are cut into coarse pieces. Decoct with seven sheng of water until reduced to two and a half sheng. Strain, add Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), and boil briefly over fire. Take five he of the warm decoction. Administer three times daily. Discontinue when mild diarrhea occurs.
[Qingliang Sishun Yinzi (Cooling Four-Directional Smoothness Decoction)] Treats all types of Erysipelas, accumulation and stagnation of heat, and swelling and pain of the throat.
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, root ends removed), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chi Shao Yao (Red Paeoniae Radix), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) [equal parts].
The above herbs are cut into coarse pieces. Each dose consists of 5 qian, decocted with one sheng of water until reduced to seven-tenths. Strain and take warm after meals.
