Mix the above-mentioned herbs until the consistency is such that it does not stick to the hands. Quickly form pills the size of a Gleditsia sinensis thorn (Zaojiaoci), and wrap them in paper. For each use, take one pill, dissolve it in freshly drawn cool water, add a small amount of Borneol (Longnao, 龙脑), and apply it to the corneal opacity (Yi, 翳) from time to time.
In the above formula, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) is used as the Sovereign herb (Jun, 君) to eliminate pathogenic heat and primarily improve vision; Huangdan (Lithargyri Preparatum) is used as the Minister herb (Chen, 臣) to clear heat and remove toxicity, while Lvganshi (Calaminae Preparatum) treats dampness and has astringent and dispersing properties; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) harmonizes the blood vessels, Shexiang (Moschus) and Ruxiang (Olibanum) and other aromatic herbs promote Qi circulation, and Qingfen (Calomelas) kills sores are used as the Assistant herbs (Zuo, 佐); Pengsha (Borax) for its dissolving ability, Haipiaoxiao (Sepiae Endoconcha) for grinding away opacities, Baodingxiang (Stercus Columbae) for treating fixed lesions, and Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum) for removing red meridians and external obstructions are used as the Envoy herbs (Shi, 使).
Xiaoyi Fuming Gao (Opacity-Dissolving Vision-Restoring Ointment): Treats the same symptoms as above.
Huangdan (Water-flown Lithargyri Preparatum, 4 liang), Qingyan (Halitum, 1 liang, ground separately), Baishami (White Honey, 1 jin), Hezi (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus, 8 pieces, pitted, powdered), Haipiaoxiao (Sepiae Endoconcha, 3 qian, powdered).
First, boil the honey for several boils, filter off the wax layer with clean paper, then add Huangdan, stir evenly with a stick, and subsequently add the remaining herbs. Remove when it turns purple.
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 10 liang), Ruiren (Pruni Semen, 0.5 liang), Muzeycao (Equiseti Herba, 1 liang), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 75 pieces, skin and tip removed).
Soak all together in a porcelain vessel with one dou of water: for five days in spring and autumn, three days in summer, and ten days in winter. Then place in a pot and decoct with mild fire until only slightly less than half a sheng remains. Filter out the dregs, stew over hot water to form a paste, then add the previously mentioned herbs and continue decocting, stirring until purple. Add one qian of Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum). Use a small amount to apply to the eyes; when the medicine dries, dissolve it in clean water for use.
In the above formula, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) is the Sovereign herb for treating pathogenic heat; Ruiren (Pruni Semen), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), and Longdancao (Gentianae Radix et Rhizoma) are the Minister herbs for eliminating redness and pain, moistening dryness and irritability, and resolving heat toxicity; Huangdan (Lithargyri Preparatum), Qingyan (Halitum), Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum), and Baishami (White Honey) are the Assistant herbs for drying dampness and ulcers, benefiting Kidney Qi, treating redness and swelling, and harmonizing various herbs; Hezi (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus), Haipiaoxiao (Sepiae Endoconcha), and Muzeycao (Equiseti Herba) are the Envoy herbs for astringency to keep efficacy localized, and for eliminating obstructions and grinding away opacities.
Chufeng Yisun Tang (Wind-Expelling and Injury-Nourishing Decoction): Treats eye injuries caused by foreign objects.
Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Gaoben (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma et Radix), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 0.7 qian).
Prepare as one dose, add two zhan of water, decoct to one zhan, remove dregs, and take while very hot.
In the above formula, Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) is the Sovereign herb for tonifying Kidney Water. The black part of the eye belongs to the Kidney (son organ); deficiency here requires tonifying the mother organ. Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) nourishes Blood because the eyes are nourished by Blood; injury causes Blood pathology, and Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) both nourishes Blood and Qi because Blood pathology affects Qi, serving as the Minister herb. Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) treats headache due to Blood deficiency, and Gaoben (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma et Radix) promotes blood circulation and removes wind from the head, serving as the Assistant herb. Qianhu (Peucedani Radix) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) treat wind pathogens, ensuring they do not stagnate, serving as the Envoy herb. It also treats conditions of excessive blood loss. If injured at the brow bone, the disease descends from the eye system due to gaps in the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian; add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) to treat. If injured at the cheekbone, the disease ascends; if injured at the ear, the disease enters from the sharp angle due to gaps in the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian; add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) to treat. If injured at the forehead, vertex intersection, upper corner of the ear, or brain, the disease exits from the interior due to gaps in the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian; add Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) to treat. If injured behind the ear, ear horn, or front of the ear, the disease descends obliquely from Kecheren (ST7); if injured at the cheek, the disease enters from the sharp angle due to gaps in the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian; add Longdancao (Gentianae Radix et Rhizoma) to treat. If injured at the frontal angle or vertex, the disease descends from the eye system due to gaps in the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian; add Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) to treat. For severe injuries, temporarily double the dosage of Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) to purge stagnant blood. For excessive discharge, tearing, sensitivity to light, redness, and swelling, add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) to treat.
Jiajian Dihuang Wan (Modified Rehmannia Pill): Treats the same symptoms as above.
Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (each 0.5 jin), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 3 liang), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus, 2 liang), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 1 liang).
Grind into fine powder, make pills with refined honey, sized like Torreya seeds. Take thirty pills per dose before meals on an empty stomach, washed down with warm wine or light salt water.
In the above formula, Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) tonifies the true Yin of Kidney Water as the Sovereign herb; insufficient Kidney Water leads to flourishing Minister Fire, so Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) and Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) subdue Minister Fire. Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) expels stagnant blood, and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) benefits new blood as the Minister herb. Bran-fried Zhike (Aurantii Frizctus) harmonizes Stomach Qi, as the Stomach is the source of generating Blood, thus replenishing the root; Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) moistens dryness, as Blood deficiency generates dryness, serving as the Assistant herb. Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) both ascend and clear, greatly dispelling wind pathogens, treating diseases caused by seven emotions, five thieves, hunger/fullness, and labor/fatigue. For eye pain, take concurrently with Danggui Yangrong Tang (Angelica Nourishing Nutrient Decoction). This formula is suitable for post-typhoid recovery conditions, as well as conditions of Blood deficiency, Blood emptiness, and Blood loss.
Renshen Buyang Tang (Ginseng Tonifying Yang Decoction): Treats residual pathogenic factors from typhoid failing to dissipate, ascending to empty orifices, causing symptoms of hidden discomfort, redness, swelling, corneal opacity, photophobia, headache, and bone pain.
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) (each 0.6 qian), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (each 0.3 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Zhigancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 0.4 qian), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 0.5 qian), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (wine-washed, fried, 0.4 qian).
Prepare as one dose, add two zhan of water, decoct to one zhan, remove dregs, and take hot.
The above formula regulates Yin and Yang, and ascending and descending. Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) and Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) are the Sovereign herbs, guiding the ascent of Yang; Fuling (Poria) and Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) are the Minister herbs, guiding the descent of Yin; Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) greatly tonify Spleen and Stomach; internal fullness prevents pathogenic retention, while Huangqi (Astragali Radix) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) strengthen the skin and hair; external density prevents pathogenic entry, serving as the Assistant herbs. Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) both generate Blood, as the eyes see when nourished by Blood; Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) tonifies Kidney Water, as Shen Water (aqueous humor) belongs to the Kidney; Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) regulates Qi, Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) unblocks meridians, and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) harmonizes various herbs, serving as the Envoy herbs.
Yiyang Jiulian San (Suppressing Yang and Wine-Linked Powder): Treats tightening and shrinking of Shen Water (aqueous humor) to the size of a rapeseed, and peripheral changes resembling insect erosion, yet vision remains clear without dimness, presenting only slight sensitivity and discomfort.
Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (each 0.3 qian), Manjingzi (Vittaginis Fructus), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Shengcaogen (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 0.4 qian), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, wine-processed), Hanshuishi (Calcitum), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Lianlian (Coptidis Rhizoma, wine-processed) (each 0.5 qian), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) (0.3 qian).
Prepare as one dose, add two zhan of water, decoct to one zhan, remove dregs, and take very hot.
The above formula suppresses Yang and moderates Yin. Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) tonifies the true Yin of Kidney Water as the Sovereign herb; Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) all benefit Kidney Water as the Minister herbs; Manjingzi (Vittaginis Fructus), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) are a group of Yang-ascending herbs serving as the Assistant herbs, meaning that after suppression, they separate to prevent mutual infringement; Shengcaogen (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Hanshuishi (Calcitum), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), and Lianlian (Coptidis Rhizoma) are non-migratory herbs serving as the Envoy herbs, aiming solely to suppress rather than expel. All wine-processed herbs serve as guides.
Danggui Buxue Tang (Angelica Tonifying Blood Decoction): Treats epistaxis and hematochezia in men, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis in women postpartum, excessive blood loss leading to eyeball pain, inability to see, photophobia, soreness and dryness, eyelid weakness, and soreness/aching in the brow bones and temporal regions.
Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 0.6 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Zhigancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 0.5 qian), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Tiandong (Asparagi Radix) (each 0.4 qian).
Prepare as one dose, add two zhan of water, decoct to one zhan, remove dregs, and take slightly hot. For nausea and loss of appetite, add Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) to decoct.
This formula specializes in tonifying Blood, so Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) are the Sovereign herbs; Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), and Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) are the Minister herbs, as they dispel wind, restore continuity, relieve pain, and facilitate blood tonification; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) greatly harmonize Stomach Qi, serving as the Assistant herbs; Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) ascends, Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) tonifies the Kidney, and Tiandong (Asparagi Radix) treats Blood heat, as Blood loss generates wind and dryness, serving as the Envoy herbs.
Lingyangjiao San (Antelope Horn Powder): Treats residual toxins after pediatric exanthematous fever failing to resolve, attacking the eyes upward, causing corneal opacity, photophobia, excessive discharge and tearing, redness, swelling, and closure.
Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu, shaved), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Caojueming (Semen Cassiae), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Shengma ( Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (equal parts).
Prepare as one dose, add one zhan of water, decoct to half a zhan, remove dregs, and take slightly hot.
In the above formula, Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu) is the Sovereign herb for improving vision; Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) supplements Taiyin to solidify the interior and expel toxins, while Huangqi (Astragali Radix) supplements Hand-Taiyin to solidify the exterior and resist pathogens, serving as the Minister herbs; Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) ascends clear Yang, and Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) drains turbid Yin as the Assistant herb; Caojueming (Semen Cassiae) treats redness, pain, and tearing, while Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), and Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) attack consolidated heat as the Envoy herbs. However, Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) are strongly bitter and cold; wise practitioners should assess deficiency and excess to adjust dosages. For eye diseases occurring within twenty-one days of exanthematous fever, Xiaodu Huaban Tang (Detoxifying and Macule-Resolving Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Xiaodu Huaban Tang (Detoxifying and Macule-Resolving Decoction): Treats pediatric exanthematous fever where eye diseases occur within twenty-one days. Other symptoms are the same as above.
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 0.5 qian), Gaoben (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma et Radix, 0.2 qian), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 0.1 qian), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 0.3 qian), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 0.1 qian), Jiu Huangqin (Wine-processed Scutellariae Radix, 0.2 qian), Jiu Huangbai (Wine-processed Phellodendri Cortex, 0.3 qian), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, 0.2 qian), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 0.5 qian), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 0.5 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 0.1 qian), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 0.2 qian), Shengcaogen (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.1 qian), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, 0.05 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 0.2 qian), Honghua (Carthami Flos, 0.05 qian), Sumu (Sappan Lignum, 0.1 qian), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 0.3 qian), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus, 0.3 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 0.5 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 0.2 qian), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 0.1 qian), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 0.2 qian).
The efficacy of this formula is not limited to the eyes but is specifically established for macules. Using macule-treating agents for eye disease is because the toxin is still vigorous and affecting the eyes. The eruption of macules begins with Bladder Ren Water overcoming Small Intestine Bing Fire; Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) and Gaoben (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma et Radix) treat the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. Next, Kidney Gui Water overcomes Heart Fire; Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) treats the Shaoyin Heart, so these are the Sovereign herbs. Finally, the two Fires become vigorous and counteract Cold Water; thus, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) treat the two Fires. Wine-processing is a reverse treatment method. Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) benefits Kidney Water, so these are the Minister herbs. Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) ascend Yang Qi and dispel wind pathogens; Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) resolve toxic pathogens; Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) disperses stagnation; Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) remove dampness and harmonize the Stomach; Shengcaogen (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) greatly reduces various heats, so these are the Assistant herbs. The above formula addresses symptoms caused by improper diet and temperature regulation in children. Improper diet and exposure to cold/heat damage the Spleen and Stomach, the origin of Yin and Yang. Thus, Clear Yang sinks and fails to ascend, while Turbid Yin rises and fails to descend. Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Renshen (Ginseng Radix) first tonify Spleen and Stomach as the Sovereign herbs; Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Zhike (Aurantii Fructus) assist the above herbs in tonifying Spleen and Stomach as the Minister herbs; Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) dries dampness, while Fuling (Poria) and Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) guide Turbid Yin downward as the Assistant herbs; finally, Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Manjingzi (Vittaginis Fructus), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Boheye (Menthae Haplocalycis Folium), as primary wind-dispelling herbs, overcome dampness and guide Clear Yang upward as the Envoy herbs. This is the orthodox and miraculous method of treatment.
