Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) is deficient and invaded by Cold Pathogen; Yuan Qi (Original Qi) is weak and damaged by dietary irregularities. External invasion combined with internal injury brews into disease. Parents, considering the child to possess pure Yang, do not provide warm clothing in deep winter; parents, thinking the child dislikes wind, do not remove clothes in midsummer; parents, fearing hunger, force-feed after nursing; parents, fearing thirst, give extra fluids after breastfeeding. Some foolish parents fail to examine cold/heat and dietary needs properly: thus, cold does not lead to warming, heat does not lead to cooling, drinking does not reach thirst, eating does not reach satiety. Children are young and silent, suffering from illness but unable to speak of it. Thus, external invasion and internal injury accumulate gradually, brewing into Gan Syndrome (Pediatric Malnutrition). Symptoms include thirst and easy hunger, emaciation despite eating, abdominal distension with diarrhea, and a hissing sound in the throat. If untreated over time, eye diseases arise. The pathology involves the formation of nebulae (corneal opacities), eyelids closed and unable to open, discharge like paste, eventually flowing pus, leading to blindness in both eyes. Why? Because Yang Qi sinks downward and Yin Qi rebels upward. The treatment method should follow the "Treatise on Yin and Yang Corresponding to Phenomena": Clear Yang emerges from the upper orifices, Turbid Yin exits through the lower orifices; Clear Yang disperses through the Cou Li (interstices), Turbid Yin travels to the Zang Organs; Clear Yang fills the four limbs, Turbid Yin returns to the Fu Organs. Let each return to its origin, not reversing their normal state; this is the treatment principle. One should prepare decoctions that raise Yang and descend Yin, primarily using Fuling Xie Shi Tang (Poria Decoction to Drain Dampness) or Shengma Longdancao Yinzi (Ephedra and Gentian Decoction). These medicines are not exclusively for the eyes but also treat the aforementioned syndromes. However, do not delay treatment; delay leads to critical danger. Parents must be prudent.
The Left Cun pulse is surging and rapid, indicating Heart Fire flaming upward; the Guan pulse is wiry and surging, indicating Liver Fire excess. The Right Cun and Guan pulses are both wiry and surging; this indicates Liver Wood leveraging the momentum of Ministerial Fire to first insult Metal (the element it cannot overcome) and then control Earth (the element it overcomes). The Chi pulse is weak and faint, indicating Kidney Water failing to ascend, leaving Fire above. The Chi pulse is surging and rapid, indicating Ministerial Fire and Evil Fire flaming upward, carrying the pathogenic factor of Liver Wood to scorch the eyes.
The Classics state: "The eyes can see when they receive Blood." Therefore, Blood is the master of the eyes; Blood disease causes eye disease; Blood coagulation causes eye swelling/distension; Blood deficiency causes dry eyes; Blood Heat causes red and swollen eyes. Thus, ancient physicians treated eye diseases only by selecting Shen Ting, Shangxing, Xinhui, Qian Ding, and Baihui points for bloodletting. For nebulae caused by Blood stasis, they could make them recede immediately; for pain, stop it immediately; for dim vision, restore clarity immediately; for swelling, eliminate it immediately. There is a method of removing Blood, but it is only applicable to sudden Heat toxicity and acute swelling, and should not be used as a routine method. Why? Because modern people often suffer from Fire generated by emotional stagnation (Seven Emotions) and depletion of Qi and Blood. Excessive bloodletting causes the eyes to become more withered, losing nourishment and flourishing, making the disease more intense, leading to chronic non-healing and eventual blindness. Contemporary physicians treating eye diseases should take invigorating Blood and cooling Blood as the supreme strategy, achieving results by nourishing Yin and descending Fire. This is the general outline for treating eye diseases; it causes no harm and guarantees complete success. Physicians must study this carefully.
