[Tian (Heaven)] Yang qi accumulates to form Heaven, covering all things with impartiality and selflessness; thus, the sage takes the heart of Heaven and Earth as his own. If a person can accumulate pure Yang qi, they may become an immortal (Tianxian), sharing longevity with Heaven and ascending, due to the principle that similar entities attract each other. The sage fears the Mandate of Heaven and does not complain against it. Those who revere Heaven survive; those who follow Heaven prosper. Heaven is 108,000 li high. How do we know this? The *Erya* states: "When the Peng bird flies, it reaches halfway to Heaven"; and again: "The Peng bird flies 90,000 li at once," from which we deduce the distance. When the Gate of Heaven opens and humans see it, it signifies great prosperity. The Gate of Heaven is the canopy of Heaven; in autumn, it is clearest, revealing its essence. Seeing it on a clear night shows it dissipates quickly, all due to the transformation of Qi. Like morning and evening clouds illuminated by the sun, these are changes of Qi and cannot last long.
[Ri Yue (Sun and Moon)] The Sun is the essence of Yang, and the Moon is the essence of Yin. Staring at them for long periods damages the eyes. The *Xishan Ji* states: "Urinating towards the Sun or Moon reduces lifespan." Do not swear by pointing at the Sun, nor engage in lustful thoughts while facing the Moon; both reduce lifespan.
Children should not point at the Moon; doing so causes sores behind the ears, known as Moon-eating Sores. One must not point at [rulers/superiors]; the poem says: "When the Sun is eclipsed, no one dares to point." A solar halo indicates rain; a lunar halo indicates wind.
[Xing Chen (Stars)] Looking at stars during rainfall damages the eyes. It is also said: Do not spit at stars. Observing the night sky and identifying one star in the Big Dipper ensures no eye diseases throughout life. Among the Dipper stars are four called Tianli Stars, which are not very bright. If they shine brightly, the world prospers; if dim, chaos ensues. Folk saying: Knowing the Star of Great Men prevents malaria. Flickering starlight indicates wind.
[Feng Yu (Wind and Rain)] Do not go out during heavy rain and strong winds. During the day, keep doors closed; at night, rise, dress fully, and sit upright. Confucius said: "When encountering violent wind and thunder, even at night, one must rise," showing reverence for Heaven's anger. The *Ganying Pian* states: Do not scold the wind or curse the rain. The *Zhongzang Jing* states: Cooling off by facing the wind or walking in the rain leads to illness. The *Qianjin Yaofang* states: Whether at home or traveling, sudden violent winds and rains are caused by Dragon Spirits passing by; one should seek shelter immediately.
[Mei Yu (Plum Rain)] The *Bencao* states: Plum rain water washes sores and scabies, removes scars, and helps fermentation when added to soy sauce. Clothes stained by it rot easily but can be cleaned with plum leaf decoction.
[Wu Lu (Fog and Dew)**] The *Bowuzhi* states: Three people once walked in fog; one drank wine, one ate porridge, and one fasted. Later, the drinker was fine, the eater fell ill, and the fasting person died. The *Bencao* states: Walking in heavy fog in the morning, one should drink wine to ward off evil Qi. The *Qianjin Fang* states: Do not travel far in yin fog. Heavy fog lasting three days predicts heavy rain; do not walk in fog before rain falls. Dew on flowers improves complexion. Dew on cypress leaves benefits vision. Autumn dew on herbs benefits vision, treats various diseases, lightens the body, reduces hunger, and nourishes skin. Dew on frost-resistant flowers damages the eyes.
[Fan Lu (Abundant Dew)] This refers to dense autumn dew. Collect it in porcelain dishes, mix with rock sugar, and consume. Long-term use extends life and reduces hunger. Seal in clean bottles and bury underground; older samples are better for treating Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst).
[Shuang Xue (Frost and Snow)] The *Bencao* states: Winter frost is cold and non-toxic, relieving nasal congestion in Shanghan (Cold Damage) and flushing/redness after alcohol consumption. Travelers in heavy snow should not wash feet with hot water or drink hot wine immediately, as toes may fall off. Store December snow in clean bottles buried underground; retrieve in May/June to quench thirst and resolve heat from alcohol. Alternatively, mix December snow water with Han Shi dough to paste scrolls, preventing insect damage.
[Bao Zheng Jiang Wei (Hail Corrects Soy Sauce Flavor)] The *Bencao* states: If soy sauce tastes abnormal, add one or two sheng of hailwater to the jar to restore its original flavor.
[Lei Chu Zao Shi (Thunder Removes Fleas and Lice)] The *Fengsu Tong* states: Beating bedding when thunder first sounds removes fleas and lice. Thunder should not cover soy sauce; folk saying: Eating such sauce causes rumbling in the abdomen. Do not lie on your back during thunder.
[Xue Lei (Snow Thunder)] Thunder amidst snow indicates continuous rainy weather for a hundred days.
[Ye Lei (Night Thunder)**] People in Dongzhou say: "Thunder starting at night brings three days of rain." Meaning thunder beginning at night implies consecutive rainy days.
[Nan Bei Bao (South-North Hail/Lightning)] Rain proverb: "Southern lightning lasts a thousand years; northern lightning strikes instantly." Meaning southern lightning indicates no rain; northern lightning indicates imminent rain.
[Yu Lin Yun (Fish-Scale Clouds)**] Proverb: "Sky full of fish-scale clouds, the sun will bake old monks dry." Also: "Clouds moving east allow carts and horses to pass." These indicate spring clouds without rain.
[Wu Yun Jie Ri (Dark Clouds Meeting the Sun)**] Proverb: "Dark clouds meeting the sun mean tomorrow won't be as good as today." Also: "Sunset with spreading clouds means either rain or cold." Also: "Sunset clouds moving imply rain after midnight." All indicate proper rain. A single dark cloud tide is called Feng Chao (Wind Tide), anciently named Ju Feng (Hurricane) because it carries winds from four directions. Such winds accompany prolonged heavy rain, uprooting trees, destroying houses, and breaking dikes. Beforehand, a rainbow-like arc appears, called Ju Mu (Hurricane Mother). Mariners call it Fan-Breaking Wind.
[Wu Geng Yu (Fifth Watch Rain)**] Rain beating at the fifth watch guarantees clear noon; late rain failing to clear is highly accurate.
[Kuai Yu (Fast Rain)**] Proverb: "Fast rain, fast clearing." The *Daodejing* states: "Violent winds do not last a morning; sudden rains do not last a day."
[Yu Ding (Rain Nails)**] "A drop of rain like a nail, tomorrow still won't clear; a drop like a wave, tomorrow still won't end."
[Qing Xia (Clear Rosy Clouds)**] Morning and evening rosy clouds, no water for tea. Indicates drought, referring to rosy clouds after long sunshine.
[Yu Xia (Rain Rosy Clouds)**] Morning rosy clouds mean staying in market; evening rosy clouds mean traveling thousands of miles. Refers to rosy clouds after rain.
