Human beings are born by inheriting the exquisite Qi of the Five Elements and are nourished by receiving the Shen (Spirit) Qi of the Five Zang Organs. If Yin and Yang are harmonious, the Zang-Fu organs will be strong, and Wind pathogenic factors or demonic entities cannot harm the body. If regulation is lost, leading to deficiency and decline of Qi and Blood, Wind pathogens will take advantage of the deficiency, and demonic pathogens will invade the righteous Qi. However, in cases where women have intercourse with ghosts (referring to mental confusion, hallucinations, or nocturnal emissions involving spirits), it is due to the weakness of the Zang-Fu organs and the failure of the Shen to reside within, allowing demonic Qi to cause disease. The manifestations include a reluctance to see people, as if conversing with someone, sometimes laughing or talking alone, and at other times weeping bitterly. The pulse may be slow and deep (Chi Fu) or resemble the sparrow-pecking pulse (a short, forceful, irregular pulse resembling a bird pecking food), both indicating disease caused by demonic pathogens. Additionally, a continuous and fine pulse without a discernible rate, accompanied by unchanged facial color, are signs of this condition.
Xu Chunfu notes: In *Liang Fang*, the treatment for women having intercourse with ghosts often uses drugs to repel evil, which is not treating the root cause. Since it is stated that Qi, Blood, Zang-Fu organs, and Yuan Shen (Original Spirit) are all deficient, causing the Shen to fail to reside in its abode and thus resulting in dream intercourse, it is actually not due to interference by demonic entities. The mechanism is the same as that of nocturnal emission in men. Many women suffer from this syndrome but are unwilling to speak of it directly. Upon diagnosis, the pulse is deep, wiry, and weak; intermittently sparse and rapid; the face has a peach-blossom red hue; the limbs are weak; there is fatigue and a desire to lie down; food intake is reduced; mood fluctuates between quietness and agitation; and menstruation is irregular. All these indicate Blood deficiency. The therapeutic method should focus on strengthening the Spleen and Stomach, nourishing Qi and Blood to consolidate the root, while simultaneously calming the Shen and regulating Qi, clearing Phlegm and Fire to treat the branch. Early treatment may offer hope of salvation. If neglected, after three years, Qi and Blood will gradually decline, the pulse will become tight and rapid, and those with emaciated flesh unable to rise from bed will certainly die.
