[Raw Jujube] Causes heat, thirst, and abdominal distension. It is especially inadvisable for those with alternating chills and fever who are emaciated to consume it in excess, as it disturbs the Zang-Fu organs and damages Spleen Yuan Qi (Primordial Qi of the Spleen). Consuming it with honey damages the Five Zang Organs. Soft jujubes can trigger latent diseases and induce coughing; they are contraindicated with crab.
[Plum] Corrodes teeth.
[Raw Longan] If blanched in half-boiled water, it does not damage the Spleen.
[Raw Lychee] Has a hot nature. Excessive consumption induces deficiency-heat, irritability, thirst, dry mouth, and epistaxis (nosebleed).
[Cherry] Should not be consumed in excess during conditions of alternating chills and fever, as it may induce "Hidden Wind" (a latent wind-pathogen disorder), damage sinews and bones, and cause vomiting. Children consuming too much will generate heat due to its hot nature.
[Tangerine and Pomelo] Excessive consumption leads to loss of taste sensation and inability to discern the five flavors.
[Bayberry] Excessive consumption causes fever, damages teeth and sinews.
[Apricot Fruit] Excessive consumption damages sinews and bones. Apricot paste can be eaten raw or cooked; however, semi-ripe apricots are fatal. Long-term consumption of apricot kernels causes blindness, loss of eyebrows, hair, and beard, and triggers latent diseases. Kernels with two embryos are fatal but can be ground fine for treating severe trauma.
[Peach Fruit] Induces Dan Shi toxicity (toxicity from mineral pills/heat toxins), damages the Stomach, and excessive consumption generates heat. Bathing in warm water after consuming peach kernels can lead to Lin syndrome (dysuria). Peach and almond flowers typically have five petals; those with six petals invariably contain double-kernel seeds, which are fatal. This is a natural law.
[Plum] Neutral in nature but can induce malaria; excessive consumption causes deficiency-heat. Consuming with white honey harms the internal Zang-Fu organs. Do not eat plums near water or with sparrow meat. Plums that sink in water are toxic. Plum kernels eaten with chicken eggs form indigestible masses internally.
[Pear] Cold in nature. Goose pear and purple-flowered pear treat Heart heat. Other pears are not beneficial; excessive consumption injures the Middle Jiao with cold. Postpartum women and patients with traumatic wounds should avoid them, as they cause atrophy. Although beneficial to teeth, they damage the Spleen and Stomach; best avoided in the first lunar month. (Note: A pear as large as a bushel was once given to court officials by a family; all who ate it died. Investigation revealed a large snake had gathered toxins under the tree. This is not always demonic but requires caution.)
[Malus asiatica / Crabapple] Excessive consumption causes heat, astringency, lethargy, cold disorders, sores, and blocked pulses. The fruit itself should not be eaten as it causes irritability.
[Pomegranate] Excessive consumption damages the Lungs and teeth. Wild pomegranate offers no benefit when eaten in excess and is astringent.
[Chestnut] Warm in nature. Raw chestnuts treat waist and leg ailments but cause Qi stagnation if eaten raw; they should be dried, steamed, or roasted. Excessive consumption causes Qi obstruction; those with Feng Shui edema (wind-water swelling) should avoid them. Raw chestnuts can be roasted in ashes until sweating occurs to remove dampness, but should not be fully cooked. Children find raw chestnuts hard to digest and cooked ones prone to causing Qi stagnation.
[Persimmon] Cold in nature. Sun-dried persimmons are even colder; excessive consumption causes abdominal pain, and raw persimmons are extremely cold. Red persimmons eaten with crab cause vomiting of red fluid. Persimmons eaten after alcohol cause heart pain, potentially fatal, increase intoxication, and fail to resolve alcohol toxicity.
[Barnyard Millet] Extremely cold in nature. Eaten with crab, it causes severe abdominal pain and diarrhea.
[Grape Wine] Excessive consumption blurs vision. Drinking under grapevines risks injury from insect droppings.
[Ginkgo Nut] Raw ginkgo induces infantile malnutrition (Gan syndrome) and resolves alcohol toxicity. Cooked ginkgo is beneficial but should not be overconsumed, as it causes abdominal fullness. It is said consuming 1,000 nuts is fatal. It blooms at the second watch and fruits at the third, suggesting it is a Yin-toxic substance. There are records of people substituting rice with ginkgo for sustenance, resulting in death the next day.
[Water Caltrop] Also known as Ji. Cools the viscera and promotes bowel movements, damages Yang Qi, causes genital atrophy, fails to benefit the Spleen, is hard to digest, causes abdominal fullness, and can be detoxified with ginger and wine. Eating raw water caltrops in the seventh lunar month may cause pinworms.
[Sagittaria / Arrowhead] Greatly cold in nature. Triggers latent diseases, cold Qi, and abdominal distension. Autumn consumption by children causes umbilical pain. Pregnant women should avoid it. Frequent consumption in Wu region leads to Hong Kong Foot (podagra/tinea pedis), paralysis, dental damage, and pallor. Water Chestnut shares similar properties.
[Euryale Seed / Foxnut] Raw consumption moves Wind, depletes Qi, is hard for the Spleen to digest, yet benefits Essence. Children eating too much long-term may suffer from dwarfism.
[Lotus Root] Excessive consumption injures the Middle Jiao with cold, but can dispel epidemic Qi. Unlike other raw/cold foods, it is permitted postpartum because it invigorates blood and breaks stasis.
[Melon] Triggers chronic diseases. Excessive consumption causes warmth and itching in the genitals with sores, deficiency-heat, abdominal rupture, and limb weakness. Moderate intake prevents summerheat stroke, but excessive intake invariably causes diarrhea. Summer overconsumption leads to difficult-to-treat dysentery in late autumn due to Yang damage. It does not cure Hong Kong Foot. Melons sinking in water in the fifth lunar month are fatal. Excessive consumption causes jaundice, moves Qi, and counteracts medicinal efficacy. Melons with double stems are fatal. Eating with fried dough cakes induces disease. Chen Fengnong, Prefect of Fangzhou, suffered sudden immobility of waist and legs after eating melons in summer; he recovered only after treatment by Instructor Shang.
[Watermelon] Effectively resolves summerheat toxicity. Northerners, with robust constitutions, are accustomed to it; Southerners, with thinner constitutions, should avoid it. Excessive consumption triggers cold disorders in the intestines and stomach.
[Quince] Warm in nature. Thin-skinned, slightly reddish-yellow, fragrant, sweet, sour, and non-astringent. True quinces have pointed tips and square faces. They benefit the Spleen but harm teeth.
[Sugarcane] Excessive consumption causes epistaxis. Smoke from burning sugarcane dregs entering the eyes causes dim vision.
[Refined Sugar] Cold in nature. Excessive consumption causes heart pain. Eaten with crucian carp, it causes Gan syndrome; with mallow, it creates wandering masses; with bamboo shoots, it forms abdominal masses (Jia), causing heaviness and immobility. Children consuming too much damage teeth and develop pinworms.
[Hazelnut] Should not be eaten in excess; damages teeth and sinews.
[Pine Nut] Excessive consumption generates heat toxins.
[Walnut] Neutral in nature. Promotes urination, causes eyebrow loss, moves Wind and Phlegm, and induces nausea/vomiting. Excessive consumption with wine causes hemoptysis. Unripe walnuts in May induce carbuncles and alternating chills/fever. Fallen walnuts in autumn/eaten by insects cause fistulas. Damaged stored raw walnuts are harmful.
All nut kernels with two embryos are harmful.
To treat various fruit toxicities, burn pig bones to ash, grind into powder, and take one cubic inch spoonful with water.
