One *jin* (approx. 500g) of Mercury (*Hydrargyrum*), mixed with four *liang* (approx. 125g) of purified Sulfur (*Sulfur*) previously melted in a pot. Pour the Mercury into the molten Sulfur, stir rapidly and evenly with a rod until it resembles rice grains, then scoop up with an iron spatula. Upon cooling, it forms blue-earth-like lumps; store for use. This is the most potent among sedative drugs, such as using it in *Lingdan* to settle phlegm or in epilepsy to suppress evil influences; it is indispensable.
Take one or two *jin* of refined mercury compound (referred to as "Qingjin") and place it in a sealed crucible, filling it halfway. Cover the mouth with an iron lamp bowl, leaving a hole the size of a tendon for smoke to escape. Apply gentle heat initially, gradually increasing to strong heat, with water in the lamp bowl. Refine for one day, then stop heating. On the next day, open and retrieve; the *Lingsha* will have condensed beneath the lamp bowl into a cake bright like Cinnabar. This is *Lingsha*.
Grind the *Lingsha* finely in a mortar, add glue water, and continue grinding so that the powder flies through a silk sieve. Material that does not pass through is returned to the mortar for further grinding. Repeat until all material passes through. Decoct Tartary Apricot Kernel (*Fructus Mume*) soup, pour it hot into the Cinnabar powder while stirring; the liquid becomes clear and red. Remove the water to obtain Cinnabar.
Melt ten *jin* of Lead (*Plumbum*) in a pot, stir-fry into powder, then add one *jin* of Potassium Nitrate (*Natrii Nitras*). Stir-fry together until extremely red to form the cinnabar-like substance.
Mix one *jin* of Mercury (*Hydrargyrum*) with two *liang* each of Alum (*Alumen*), Potassium Nitrate (*Natrii Nitras*), Green Vitriol (*Vitriolum Viride*), and Sodium Chloride (*Natrii Chloridum*). Grind them together until no mercury droplets are visible. Prepare two black porcelain basins. Place the mixture in one basin, cover tightly with the second basin, and seal the rim with a paste made of salt mud, Gypsum Fibrosum (*Gypsum*), honey, and vinegar to prevent gas leakage. Support the bottom basin with three iron nails, about four to five *cun* high. Steam over charcoal fire, starting with gentle heat and progressing to strong heat, for half a day. After cooling overnight, gently lift the upper basin. The Calomel (*Hydrargyri Chloridum Mite*) will have sublimated into the upper basin. Sweep it down with a goose feather for use. This is genuine Calomel, which has immediate effects in promoting tissue regeneration. The market often adulterates it with Halloysitum Rubrum, Argentum Mother Stone, and Gypsum Fibrosum for profit; genuine Calomel accounts for only one-tenth of one percent. How can efficacy be expected?
Use Pericarpium Zanthoxyli Sinensis (*Fructus Zanthoxyli*), Radix Thalictri (*Radix Thalictri*), Radix Asari (*Radix Asari*), Rhizoma Notopterygii (*Rhizoma Notopterygii*), Radix Angelicae Dahuricae (*Radix Angelicae Dahuricae*), Radix Chuanxiong (*Rhizoma Chuanxiong*), Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii (*Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii*), Fructus Tribuli (*Fructus Tribuli*), Rhizoma Ligustici (*Rhizoma Ligustici*), Rhizoma Gastrodiae (*Rhizoma Gastrodiae*), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (*Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae*), Radix Angelicae Pubescentis (*Radix Angelicae Pubescentis*), Rhizoma Alpiniae Officinarum (*Rhizoma Alpiniae Officinarum*), Ramulus Cinnamomi (*Ramulus Cinnamomi*), Realgar (*Realgar*), Resina Mastichae (*Resina Mastichae), Resina Olibani (*Resina Olibani*), and a small amount of Moschus (*Moschus*). Grind all ingredients except Moschus into fine powder in equal proportions. Spread thin layers of prepared Mugwort (*Herba Artemisiae Argyi*) on cotton paper, sprinkle a small amount of the medicinal powder onto the Mugwort, and roll into strips the thickness of a tendon and five *cun* long. When treating pain, prick the painful point; the effect is miraculous. For women, operate through clothing: place three layers of paper on the clothing, ignite the fire needle on a lamp, and steam the area directly through the paper. After a long time, when the fire extinguishes, the pain stops. If one wishes to avoid dispersing the qi, apply only one moxa cone equivalent; if one wishes to disperse the pathogen, apply three to five moxa cone equivalents. Naturally, the medicinal qi penetrates the meridians, similar to direct moxibustion.
