Xu Chunfu’s Note: Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) is an ancient formula specifically formulated for blood disorders. Danggui Radix Angelicae Sinensis nourishes blood and serves as the Sovereign herb; Shudihuang Radix Rehmanniae Preparata serves as the Minister herb; Baishao Radix Paeoniae Alba nourishes Yin and serves as the Assistant herb; Chuanxiong Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong moves blood and serves as the Guide herb. This is the original intent of the prescription, truly a miraculous agent for treating blood conditions. Later, it was believed that women prioritize blood, so Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) is used as the main formula. It nourishes blood and regulates menstruation, serving as a resource for both antenatal and postnatal care. Generally speaking, its importance cannot be overlooked. However, there are cases where its use yields no effect but instead worsens the condition, or even leads to fatal mismanagement. Why is this? Although Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) treats blood disorders without harming the Spleen and Stomach, if the issue is purely a blood disorder, can any other formula surpass its efficacy? Today, people fail to examine the deficiency or excess of the Spleen and Stomach and use it indiscriminately, leading to errors. Why? For those with Spleen-Stomach deficiency, using Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) further weakens them, reducing food intake gradually; Yuanqi (Primal Qi) declines, and blood loses its source of generation. If ignored and taken long-term without cessation, symptoms of Spleen diarrhea and abdominal fullness will arise. I have seen countless lives harmed by this! How can one speak of regulating menstruation and nourishing blood? Whenever using Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to treat blood disorders, one must carefully assess the patient's Spleen and Stomach. For those with Spleen deficiency, one must first use Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) or Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Decoction for Boosting the Middle and Augmenting Qi) to nourish the Stomach, before combining it with Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), ensuring safety. Both Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) and Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Decoction for Boosting the Middle and Augmenting Qi) can also benefit blood, whereas Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) cannot tonify Qi or strengthen the Spleen and Stomach; excessive use harms the Spleen and Stomach. Thus, symptoms of Spleen diarrhea and abdominal fullness are indeed caused by Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction)! One must realize that blood is generated by the Spleen and Stomach and travels through the meridians following Qi. The classics state: "Blood does not move on its own; it follows Qi." If Qi is consumed, even if Blood remains, it cannot generate itself. Therefore, death from Qi exhaustion occurs even when Blood has not been lost. Clearly, Blood cannot sustain life without Qi. Tonifying Blood without tonifying Qi makes a significant difference. Thus, the ancient formula Nü Jindan (Women’s Golden Pill) uses solely Xiangfu Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi as the Sovereign herb, claiming it regulates menstruation and resolves stagnation. However, modern use often leads to dual deficiency of Qi and Blood and worsened menstrual irregularities. If unceasing, it causes severe illness and harm. Why? Xiangfu Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi is acrid and drying, consuming Qi and drying Blood; it only opens excess stagnation. Most women today are deficient, and menstrual irregularities stem from deficiency. I created Bazhen Yimu Wan (Eight Treasures Motherwort Pill); users achieved regular menstruation and conception in less than one course. Why? Motherwort regulates menstruation as the Sovereign herb, assisted by Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) to tonify Qi and Blood, hence its divine efficacy. Wise individuals should consider this.
Bazhen Yimu Wan (Eight Treasures Motherwort Pill) specifically treats dual deficiency of Qi and Blood, weakness of both Spleen and Stomach, poor appetite, limb weakness, delayed menstruation, or early onset; or lower back pain and abdominal distension with slow onset; or overdue menstruation without cessation; or intermittent flow; or red and white leukorrhea, alternating chills and fever; effective in all cases. Conception can occur after one month. For severe deficiency, one jin of medicine ensures timely conception.
Ingredients: Yimucao Herba Leonuri (4 liang, avoid iron, use only upper half with leaves), Renshen Radix Ginseng (remove rhizome), Baizhu Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (soil-fried), Fuling Poria (peeled), Zhigancao Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (peeled), Danggui Radix Angelicae Sinensis (wine-washed), Chuanxiong Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong, Baishao Radix Paeoniae Alba (vinegar-fried), Shudihuang Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (wine-washed).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder, form pills with honey, size of a bullet. Take one pill with honey water on an empty stomach. If unable to chew, make small pills like mung beans, taking 70-80 per dose.
For Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold, add Shaoren Fructus Amomi (1 liang), stir-fried with ginger juice.
For abdominal bloating, add Shanzha Fructus Crataegi (1 liang), steamed over rice meat.

Preparation and Administration: Decoct in 1.5 cups of water until 0.8 cup remains, take at any time.
Xiao Wenjing Tang (Minor Warming Menses Decoction): Treats initial menstruation complicated by wind-cold invasion, body pain, alternating chills and fever, slight Yin-Yang deficiency, dizziness, restlessness, discomfort, or vomiting.
Ingredients: Danggui Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Shaoyao Radix Paeoniae Alba/Lactiflorae, Dihuang Radix Rehmanniae (each 7 fen), Chuanxiong Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong (3 fen), Baizhu Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Chenpi Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (each 6 fen), Chaihu Radix Bupleuri, Huangqin Radix Scutellariae, Zhike Fructus Aurantii, Qianghuo Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii, Guizhi Ramulus Cinnamomi, Xiangfu Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi (each 5 fen), Shaoren Fructus Amomi, Xiaohuixiang Fructus Foeniculi, Gancao Radix Glycyrrhizae (each 3 fen).

Ingredients: Danggui Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Chuanxiong Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong, Shaoyao Radix Paeoniae Alba/Lactiflorae, Shudihuang Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, Renshen Radix Ginseng, Banxia Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata, Chaihu Radix Bupleuri, Huangqin Radix Scutellariae, Chenpi Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, Maimendong Radix Ophiopogonis, Gancao Radix Glycyrrhizae (equal parts).

For vomiting and inability to eat, add Shaoren Fructus Amomi, Baizhu Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae; for insomnia, add Suanzaoren Semen Ziziphi Spinosae; for cough, add Xingren Semen Armeniacae Amarum, Wuweizi Fructus Schisandrae; for abdominal pain, add Yuanhusuo Rhizoma Corydalis.
Xiangfu Bazhen Tang (Cyperi Eight Treasures Decoction): Suitable for those with recurrent menstruation after cessation and Qi-Blood deficiency.
Ingredients: Xiangfu Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi, Renshen Radix Ginseng, Baizhu Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Fuling Poria, Danggui Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Baishao Radix Paeoniae Alba, Shudihuang Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, Chuanxiong Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong, Gancao Radix Glycyrrhizae (equal parts).
Preparation and Administration: Decoct in 2 zhong of water with 3 slices of ginger and 1 jujube until 0.8 portion remains, take. For irregular menstruation, Wuji Wan (Black Chicken Pill) is suitable (see Gynecology section).
(Benzi Ji) Bazhen Yimu Shiquan Wan (Eight Treasures Motherwort Ten Complete Pills): Benefits Kun Yuan (female physiological foundation), tonifies Qi and Blood, eliminates dripping leukorrhea, strengthens emaciated bodies, aids regular menstruation and conception, comparable to diplomatic prowess, harmonizes antenatally, tonifies postnatally. Truly a sacred remedy for women, surpassing ancient and modern formulas. Those with families must know this. I laugh at contemporary physicians who only collect ancient formulas like Xiangfu Shengjin Dan for opening depression and regulating menstruation in women, failing to recognize the vast differences in deficiency/excess between ancient and modern times. Ancients had solid Qi and mostly stagnation, so Xiangfu Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi was used to guide. Xiangfu Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi is acrid and drying, only capable of breaking stagnation. Excessive use severely consumes Qi and Blood, worsening deficiency and illness, offering no tonification. Today, nine out of ten women are deficient and require tonification; using Xiangfu Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi to consume them further creates frailty. Early differentiation failure leads to critical, hard-to-cure states.
Ingredients: Yimucao Herba Leonuri (harvested May 5th or June 6th, shade-dried, remove lower half, use upper half with spike and leaves, pounded in stone mortar to fine powder, 8 liang), Renshen Radix Ginseng (steamed over drinking water), Baizhu Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (steamed over rice), Baifuling Poria (steamed over rice, each 1 liang), Zhigancao Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (5 fen), Dangguishen Radix Angelicae Sinensis (wine-soaked, 2 liang), Chuanxiong Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong (5 fen), Shudihuang Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (wine-soaked, 2 liang), Baishao Radix Paeoniae Alba (vinegar-fried, 1 liang), Jiaochenxiang Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (4 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Grind each into fine powder, mix with refined honey into pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 90 pills with honey water on an empty stomach, followed by dried fruit. For those unable to swallow, dissolve and take; especially effective. In winter, take with wine. For women with irregular menstruation or dual Qi-Blood deficiency with inherent weakness, this nourishes and regulates. For those with primary amenorrhea, one course restores flow; for irregular menstruation, one month regularizes it; for infertility, conception occurs within one month.
Occasional use during pregnancy secures the fetus. For slight fetal movement during pregnancy, immediate use stabilizes it.
Postpartum use, dissolved in child’s urine and wine, prevents blood stasis and dizziness. Frequent use tonifies deficiency, invigorates blood, and safely treats postpartum ailments. For rapid effect, dissolve in wine.
Tongjing Wan (Menstruation Unblocking Pill): Treats amenorrhea with mass formation, very fast acting.
Ingredients: Shudihuang Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (3 liang), Mengchong Blatta (remove head and wings, fried), Shuizhi Hirudo (fried with glutinous rice), Taoren Semen Persicae (remove skin and tips, each 50).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder, refine honey into pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 5 pills mixed on an empty stomach, gradually increase to 7 pills, stopping when menstruation resumes.
Jingyan Tiaojing Tang (Experienced Menstrual Regulation Decoction): Treats irregular menstruation, early or late, heavy or light, absent for months, or twice a month; effective in all cases.
