(From *Shen Fang*) Erxian Gao (Two Immortals Paste): Treats Pi Qi (stagnation of qi leading to abdominal masses) where lumps form in the abdomen.
Mingfan (Alum), Xionghuang (Realgar) (each 2 liang)
Grind into fine powder. First, mix with 2 liang of water paste to form a paste. Spread on paper and apply to the affected area for immediate effect. If ineffective, apply another 2 liang spread on paper. It is necessary to observe that after applying the medicine, the stool discharges pus-like material, at which point the disease will be cured.
Sansheng Gao (Three Sages Paste): Applied to Pi blocks to transform them into pus and blood.
Use Weihua Duanshi (uncalcined lime) (0.5 jin) ground into powder, lightly stir-fried on a tile until red, then removed. When the heat subsides slightly, add Dahuang Rhizome powder (1 liang) and stir-fry until hot, then remove again. Add Guixin (Cinnamon Twig) powder (5 qian) and stir-fry briefly. Boil down with rice vinegar to form a paste. Spread thickly, warm it, and apply for cure.
(From *Jingyan*) Sisheng Gao (Four Sages Paste): Specifically applied to Pi blocks.
Ye (Leaves), Dusuan (Single Clove Garlic), Yan (Salt), Chuanshanjia (Pangolin Scales)
Mash the above ingredients into cakes using good vinegar. Apply according to the size of the Pi block. The duration should be equivalent to the burning time of two incense sticks. The Pi block transforms into pus and water, which is discharged through the stool.
Hupo Gao (Amber Paste)
Dahuang Rhizome, Puxiao (Mirabilite) (each 1 liang)
Grind into powder. Mash Daye (Garlic Bulb) into a paste and apply.
Another prescription: Use Shuihonghua (Polygonum Ayacutifolium) or its seeds. For every 1 bowl of herb, add 3 bowls of water. Boil down using mulberry wood fire (alternating gentle and strong heat) into a paste. Spread on paper according to the size of the Pi block. Stop when a sense of weakness (symptom relief) is felt. The paste can also be taken internally mixed with wine. Avoid greasy and pungent foods. Those who do not drink alcohol should take it with plain boiled water.
Zhangsun Jun's acupuncture method for Ji Kuai (accumulated masses) and Jia (masses): First, needle directly on the mass. For severe cases, insert one needle at the head of the mass and one at the tail. Effect is immediate. After needling, perform moxibustion.
Acupoints: Zhangmen (LR13), Tianshu (ST25), Qihai (CV6), Tonggu (BL28 - *Note: likely referring to a specific local point or typo in original context, often associated with foot/shank in some contexts but listed here as abdominal*), Shangwan (CV13), Zhongwan (CV12).
The above six acupoints can all be used for moxibustion on accumulated masses; select according to the syndrome.
Ben Tun Qi (Running Piglet Qi) causing masses attacking the heart, hypochondriac pain and fullness, breathless and near death. (First wash hands and feet with decoction □, then select lower acupoints.)
Qimen (LR14), Qihai (CV6), Guanyuan (CV4) (moxa 5 zhu each).
Zhu Danxi treated a woman who, after weeping for her deceased son, developed a chest obstruction with a lump the size of a cup. Her appetite decreased, complexion was pale yellow and dark/black, and she was extremely exhausted. Pulse was wiry, deficient, thin, and choppy. She had afternoon fever. Recognizing the critical condition, he used both tonification and purgation methods. He prescribed Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with modifications as needed, alternating with Dongyuan's Piqi Wan (Pi Qi Pill). Decoction was taken before meals, pills after meals, with the volume of decoction greater than pills. After one month, the alternating chills and fever subsided, and appetite slightly improved. Continuing the previous medication, after two months, she suddenly experienced severe chills and fever, which subsided at dawn. The lump enlarged, and by evening, swelling occurred in the lower half of the hands and feet. Medication was stopped for several days. Suddenly, the swelling disappeared, and at dawn, the chest lump felt smaller. Then, Erchen Tang (Two Aged Ingredients Decoction) plus Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), and Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) were taken for half a month, resulting in stability. She gave birth to a child the following year.
Another woman, aged forty, with a white face and thin body, and an irritable temperament. Due to significant dissatisfaction, three months later a lump appeared in the breast, gradually enlarging to cover the heart region, with slight pain and diaphragmatic oppression. Appetite decreased by three-quarters. Every morning, bitter taste in the mouth. Both wrists showed a faint, short, and choppy pulse. I knew her menstruation had ceased. Therefore, I administered Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), assisted by Qi-regulating herbs, in large doses. Four doses per day. Externally, Dashan Hupo Gao (Large Amber Paste) was applied to the lump to prevent further growth. After more than a month, having taken over a hundred doses of tonics, appetite recovered to half of normal. The previous medication continued. Another month passed, and the pulse energy gradually became harmonious. The same medication was given, along with Runxia Wan (Moisten and Descend Pills) swallowed, over a hundred doses. Menstruation returned, and the choppy pulse decreased by four-fifths. At that time, the weather was hot. I surmised that menstrual blood would be purple. I added Cu Sanleng (Vinegar-processed Sparganii Rhizoma) to the previous formula, swallowed Runxia Wan, and assisted with Yi Qing Wan (Suppress Green Pill), 15 pills. After another month, the lump dissipated, and appetite returned to normal.
A man, over fifty years old, suffered from anger after getting drunk on alcohol. Pain occurred in the left hypochondrium level with the umbilicus. Since then, a small lump gradually formed. It sometimes protruded and sometimes did not, accompanied by pain. When pain ceased, it receded. Complexion was yellow, mouth dry, lacking strength, poor appetite. Belching with odor after eating. Aversion to wind and cold. Pulse: Left larger than Right, wiry, choppy, and long. This indicates excessive Wood and Fire, injury to Spleen and Stomach, and consumption of Yin Blood. Initially, Hewei Tang (Harmonize Stomach Decoction) was given to tonify Stomach Qi and nourish Yin Blood. Baohe Wan (Preserve Harmony Pill) was swallowed to expel food stagnation. When Stomach Qi was solid and Blood sufficient, Xiaokuai Hewei Tang (Eliminate Mass Harmonize Stomach Decoction) was used: Renshen (3 qian), Baizhu (1.5 qian), Chenpi (1 qian), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Danggui (each 0.5 fen), Gegen (Puerariae Radix), Honghua (Carthami Flos) (each 0.3 fen). One dose decocted and taken, swallowing Baohe Wan.
A woman with a lump in the lower abdomen, and a man with heart pain and a lump in the diaphragm, were both cured using Baizhu Tang (Atractylodis Rhizoma Decoction) swallowing 30 Baohe Pills. Baizhu (2 qian), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) (1 qian), Shaoyao, Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Chuanxiong, Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 0.5 fen).
A woman with a lump in the hypochondrium, gradually enlarging, pulse rapid and large. Inquiry revealed recent fever, decreased appetite, and fatigue. Tonification was given first, followed by attacking the lump. Chenpi (5 qian), Baizhu (1 liang), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Danggui, Qingpi (each 5 qian), Mutong (3 qian), Gancao (1 qian). Eight doses taken first. Then, Gongkuai Wan (Attack Mass Pill) was taken: Cu Qingpi (1 liang), Taoren (Pruni Semen), Cu Sanleng (1.5 liang), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (3.5 qian), Haizao (Sargassum) (8 qian). Pill made with Shenqu (Medicated Leaven) paste.
A young woman had a lump in the left hypochondrium after malaria, with scanty urination. Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Chaihu, Huang Mutong (Isodontiae Radix) (each 2 qian), Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma), Baizhu, Qingpi (each 4 qian), Gancao (0.5 fen), Ginger slice (1 piece). Decocted and taken hot before meals.
A woman, aged fifty, with robust constitution and Qi, wealthy but mentally stressed, rich diet, and irritable temperament, often suffered from menorrhagia. Doctors frequently used astringent herbs to stop bleeding. Later, the disease moved Qi, resulting in over ten lumps of various sizes in the chest and abdomen. Pain was severe at night, lasting months in bed. Pulse: Both hands choppy and weak. This was caused by the use of astringents, leading to the accumulation and stagnation of discarded blood. In March, Shuhui Gen (Malvae Root) decoction was prepared, then Renshen, Baizhu, Chenpi, Qingpi, Gancao Gao (Licorice Tip), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) were decocted together. A small amount of Xuanmingfen (Natrii Sulfas Depuratus) was added. Crushed Taoren was mixed in and taken hot. After three doses, abdominal pain occurred, and one mass was expelled. Taking the dregs again, another mass was expelled. Later, Shuhui Gen and Xuanmingfen were removed. Several doses were taken, and the masses gradually dissipated.
A maid, slightly purple-skinned and fat, quiet and worried, nearly forty years old, had amenorrhea for three months. A lump in the center of the lower abdomen started like millet and grew like a steamed bun. Examination: Both pulses choppy, slightly slippery upon deep pressure. Pressing the lump caused pain. Palpation revealed it raised about one cun. Qianjin Xiaoshi Wan (Thousand Gold Niter Pill) was administered to purge 4-5 times. Later, she spontaneously mentioned milky discharge from nipples, fearing pregnancy. I said: No, a choppy pulse does not indicate pregnancy. Given 3-5 more doses, pulse became slightly deficient. I realized: The previous medicines were too harsh. Only Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) was given, with doubled Baizhu, assisted by Chenpi and Gancao. After thirty doses, the body became robust. Then, Xiaoshi Wan was given 4-5 times. She claimed the lump dissipated. I instructed her to stop taking it after one晕 (faint/turn). Half a month later, menstruation came with severe pain, expelling nearly half a sheng of black blood containing dozens of pepper seeds. The lump reduced by half. She sought medicine again. I advised: No medicine needed; it will completely dissipate next month. Next month, during menstruation, black blood clots were expelled, and the lump reduced by another large portion. She asked for medicine again. I said: It will definitely dissipate completely the following month. This indeed happened. Generally, with attacking medicines, once pathogenic heat retreats, Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) naturally recovers, and Xie Qi (Pathogenic Qi) gradually dissipates. If Stomach Qi is weak, using full doses of attacking medicines will inevitably injure Stomach Qi, causing disaster. Physicians must know this.
A man, sixty years old, fond of alcohol. In August, fell ill while walking in summer heat. Feet were cold past the knees. A palm-sized lump in Shangwan (CV13), pulling pain in hypochondrium, unable to sleep. Decreased appetite, no thirst. Had self-administered Shengliao Wuji San (Raw Material Five Accumulations Powder) for three doses. Pulse: All deep, choppy, and small. Not weak upon pressure, all rapid, especially on the Right. Bowels regular, urine red and difficult. Da Chengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) was used, reducing Dahuang by half. For heat, Chao Huanglian (Stir-fried Coptidis Rhizoma), Shaoyao, Chuanxiong, Gegen, Gancao were added to the decoction. Gualouren (Trichosanthis Semen), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Huanglian, Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus) pills were taken. After twelve doses, foot cold retreated to the calves, lump halved, and medication stopped. By half a month, diet returned to normal, all symptoms resolved.
One person suffered from Hongxiangjiao (Hong Kong Foot / Tinea Pedis / Beriberi). At midnight, obstruction occurred. A lump around the hypochondrium, hard as stone, painful to death. Shanmu Tang (Fir Wood Decoction) was taken. After a short while, three large bowel movements occurred, Qi flowed, and the lump dispersed. Formula: One large segment of Shanmu Jie (Fir Node), one large sheng of Juye (Tangerine Leaf), substitute bark if leaves are unavailable, 7 Dafu Binglang (Arecae Seed). Three ingredients chopped. Boiled with 3 sheng of Tongbian (Child Urine) down to 1.5 sheng. Divided into two doses. If the first dose produces rapid purgation, stop the second dose.
