In the *Da Huo Lun* (Treatise on Great Confusion), the Yellow Emperor asked: What qi mechanism causes people to be prone to forgetfulness? Qibo answered: Insufficiency of upper qi and excess of lower qi; fullness in the intestines and stomach with deficiency of heart qi. When Ying and Wei (nutritive and defensive qi) remain stagnant below and fail to ascend to the upper body in time, forgetfulness occurs.
The *Bingyuan* (Source of Diseases) states: Forgetfulness refers to starting tasks without finishing them, or speaking without knowing the beginning or end. Another form of forgetfulness is suddenly forgetting one's own affairs. These conditions arise from excessive worry and overthinking, which damage the Pericardium, causing the residence of the Shen (Spirit) to become unclear, leading to frequent forgetting when encountering events. However, excessive thinking also damages the Spleen, which can likewise cause forgetfulness. Treatment must simultaneously regulate the Heart and Spleen; when the Shen is concentrated and the Yi (Intellect) is settled, the condition will resolve spontaneously.
A choppy pulse indicates blood deficiency. A slippery pulse indicates phlegm in the chest and diaphragm. A large, surging, and scattered Heart pulse indicates internal heat/fire, which should be cleared. If the Spleen and Stomach pulses are faint and choppy, or wiry and thin, they all indicate insufficiency.
Forgetfulness results from the depletion of Heart blood due to overwork, causing the Shen to fail to remain within. Thus, one suddenly forgets. Nourishing the blood will naturally restore Heart qi and calm the Shen, eliminating forgetfulness. Excessive thinking damages the Spleen, causing stagnation of phlegm-saliva; the deeper the anxiety, the more severe the forgetfulness. Regulating the Spleen and reducing desires will clear the phlegm-saliva and clarify the Shen, thereby eliminating forgetfulness.
