[Winter Okra] It is the primary vegetable among the five vegetables. Those sown in autumn and maturing early are called "Dongkui" (Winter Okra) when they produce seeds in spring. Its core contains poison that harms the human body; its nature is cold. Consuming it hot can cause a conflict between cold and heat, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, and may even stir up wind pathogens. Eating frozen Dongkui raw can induce five types of tumor-like fluid retention diseases, and in severe cases, vomiting of clear water. Consuming it with carp is harmful to humans. One should not eat raw Dongkui in any season, as it is difficult to digest and can trigger all kinds of chronic diseases. It should be avoided while taking various medicines, otherwise it may cause madness. Wu Kui (also known as Shu Kui) bitten by dogs is inedible; it dulls one's mental faculties. If consumed after being bitten by a dog, the condition will never heal. Consuming Xu Kui along with bird meat results in a lackluster complexion.
[Raw Scallion/Garlic Chives] Eating raw scallions followed immediately by honey causes dysentery. Eating roasted scallions followed by honey causes qi stagnation leading to death. Consuming it with white dog meat causes bleeding from the nine orifices. For those who are ill, excessive consumption easily causes qi to rush upward, leading to the closure and failure of the five zang organs, damaging the stomach of weak individuals, and causing the bone joints to open. Eating scallions in the first lunar month triggers migratory wind on the face. Generally, its function is to induce sweating, but excessive consumption causes mental confusion.
[Scallion/Hu Cong] Long-term consumption damages spirit and nature, causing forgetfulness and vision loss, and triggering stubborn diseases. Symptoms such as bromhidrosis (fox odor) and dental caries worsen upon consumption. Eating it with green fish causes parasites to grow in the body.

The flower stirs up wind; it should not be eaten after the Qingming Festival as it is detrimental to patients, exacerbating conditions of chronic cold in the heart and abdomen. Frost-exposed chives are inedible as they stir up retained fluids leading to vomiting of water. Eating chives in the fifth lunar month impairs taste and strength, and it should not be eaten with beef. Ten days after suffering from a warm disease, it should not be eaten as it induces lethargy. Scallions are also unsuitable.

Eating garlic in the fourth and eighth lunar months damages spirit and gallbladder, causing asthma,急促 breathing, and internal abscesses or hernias. Having sexual intercourse after eating much garlic damages the liver and causes a lackluster complexion. Northerners have strong constitutions and are accustomed to eating it, so they fall ill less often.
[Small Garlic/Xiao Suan] It should not be eaten regularly. Eating it followed by raw fish depletes qi, causing excruciating pain in the testicles. It should not be eaten in the third lunar month as it damages willpower. After recovering from an epidemic disease, having sexual intercourse immediately after eating it leads to certain death upon relapse.

Eating them in the second lunar month damages the kidneys. Eating them with raw fish depletes yin qi, causing excruciating testicular pain.
[Daylily/Xuan Cao] Also known as Wang You (Forget-Worry). When tender, it is harvested as a wild vegetable. Eating it stirs up wind, making one feel dizzy and intoxicated all day, which is how it got its name.

[Qin/Celery-like Vegetable] Excessive consumption stirs up wind and triggers Dan Shi toxicity. Eating it with rabbit meat creates malignant diseases.
[Rutabaga/Wu Qing] Also known as Man Qing. The root should not be eaten in large quantities as it causes abdominal distension. Oil pressed from its seeds applied to the head promotes hair growth.

[Mushroom/Mu Er] Excessive consumption has a slippery nature and triggers hemorrhoids, drawing in epidemic qi due to the presence of mercury on it. In the seventh lunar month, if wax insects attach to it, eating it causes cholera; do not eat it.
[Celery/Qin Cai] Those growing in high fields are suitable for human consumption. Water celery from Heihua Di place that is red is harmful and cold-natured; eating it with vinegar damages teeth. In spring and autumn, dragons deposit essence into celery; accidental consumption causes blue hands, abdominal fullness, and unbearable pain. Taking two or three jin of rock sugar and vomiting out a lizard brings recovery.
[Bitter Vegetable/Ku Cai] Daily consumption benefits the heart; silkworm farmers should avoid it.
