外象而内感者也。四月始受水精,以成其血脉,手少阳脉养之;五月始受火精,以成其气,足太阴脉养之;
大略也。且四时之令,必始于春木,故十二经之养始于肝,所以养胎在一月二月。手心主,心包络脉也;

Discussion
Chao Yuanfang stated in *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases): The first month of pregnancy is called "Tai Pei" (Fetal Embryo), nourished by the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian; the second month is called "Shi Gao" (Beginning of Fat), nourished by the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian; the third month is called "Shi Tai" (Beginning of Fetus), nourished by the Hand Jueyin Pericardium Meridian. At this time, blood circulation is sluggish, the fetal image begins to transform, has not yet taken a fixed form, and is prone to change due to external influences. To desire upright and solemn offspring, one should constantly speak righteous words and perform righteous deeds. To desire a male child, it is advisable to wear stringed instruments (symbolizing firmness); to desire a female child, it is advisable to wear leather (symbolizing flexibility) or jade rings. To desire beautiful offspring, one should wear white jade; to desire virtuous and capable offspring, one should read poetry and books. This is the principle of internal感应 (influence) through external images. By the fourth month, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Water to form its blood vessels, nourished by the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian; by the fifth month, it receives the essence of Fire to form its Qi, nourished by the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian; by the sixth month, it receives the essence of Metal to form its sinews, nourished by the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian; by the seventh month, it receives the essence of Wood to form its bones, nourished by the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian; by the eighth month, it receives the essence of Earth to form its skin and flesh, nourished by the Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian; by the ninth month, it receives the essence of Stone to form its hair, nourished by the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian; by the tenth month, the five Zang organs, six Fu organs, joints, and spirit are all complete. This is the general outline. Since the seasons begin with Spring Wood, the nourishment of the twelve meridians starts with the Liver; hence, fetal nourishment occurs in the first and second months. The Hand Jueyin Pericardium Meridian and the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian belong to Fire and flourish in Summer; hence, fetal nourishment occurs in the fifth and sixth months. The Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian and the Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian belong to Metal and flourish in Autumn; hence, fetal nourishment occurs in the seventh and eighth months. The Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian belongs to Water and flourishes in Winter; hence, fetal nourishment occurs in the ninth month. Moreover, the mother's Kidneys are connected to the Bao Gong (Uterus); this is the mother's True Qi, which the fetus relies upon. By the tenth month, the fetus, having received nourishment from the Qi and pulses of all Zang and Fu organs within the womb, awaits the proper time for birth. This discussion is profound and contains ultimate truth; no subsequent exposition has surpassed Chao's treatise.
Ma Yiqing said: Books on fetal education and obstetric charts should not be dismissed as pedantic and ignored, nor should they be violated lightly. In contemporary common households, especially those of improper conduct, if care and taboos are slightly neglected, or if medicinal toxicity is not cleared, or if delivery is exposed to wind and dew, it is rare to find cases where mother and child remain safe without complications. Regarding methods to preserve the fetus, one must prepare and nurture in multiple ways to avoid future troubles. For instance, construction work by neighbors may disturb the fetal Qi, causing deformity or loss of life. Injury by blades causes physical damage; exposure to mud blocks orifices; beating causes dark discoloration; striking and binding cause limb spasms. Such signs are clear as day and must be treated with caution.
Regarding fetal transformation, there are claims of "changing a female fetus to male," which are considered natural processes. Eating rooster meat takes the full Yang essence from animal sources; wearing Realgar takes the full Yang essence from mineral sources. *Qian Jin Fang* mentions changing female to male using Danshen Pill, specifically the head of a rooster from the east gate. Another prescription uses one liang of Realgar sewn into a pouch for wearing. *Ben Cao* records that red roosters tonify deficiency, warm the middle, unblock the spirit, and detoxify; their liver tonifies the Kidney, and their comb blood benefits Yang. Realgar protects against evil spirits and venomous creatures when worn. Using bows and arrows, or axes, utilizes the symbolism of rigid objects in human affairs; Qi resonates secretly, and creation shifts subtly. This must occur before the third month when the fetal form is established; since the structure is not yet fixed, Yang can overcome Yin, making the change from female to male theoretically possible.
If a woman is pregnant for less than three months, the sex is undetermined, and the form is not yet formed, so drugs and techniques to influence the sex of the baby may have some basis. One method is to place an axe under the pregnant woman's bed with the blade facing down, keeping it secret. If skeptical, one might try placing a nest under a hen during incubation; all chicks hatched will be male. Another method, from the secret recipe of Zi Gong Yu Nu, is to bind a bowstring around the waist from the first sign of pregnancy and remove it after one hundred days.
Humans possess the nature of Heaven and Earth, gathering the spirit of all things. Yin and Yang are balanced, and constitution is complete, naturally so. However, odd and even numbers vary, deficiencies and losses occur, and hardness and softness serve different purposes, leading to strength or weakness. Blood and Wei Qi cannot escape the laws of waxing and waning. Thus, initial constitution cannot be generalized. Hence, anomalies like supernumerary digits, polydactyly, or physical disabilities arise from constitutional endowment; so do ulcers, abscesses, deafness, blindness, muteness, emaciation, and chronic wasting diseases. Therefore, at the beginning of embryonic formation, after the shift of Jing and Qi, protection and support indeed have methods. Heaven has Five Qi, each gathering in specific areas; Earth has Five Flavors, each entering specific pathways. Gathering requires moderation, entry requires measure. One must know and beware of what is feared, utilizing external substances for nourishment, which is natural law. Thus, regular sleep and wakefulness, moderate activity, allow for clarity and thoroughness, preventing fog, dew, wind, and pathogens from entering. Nourishing according to seasons is also natural. One must regulate emotions, reduce desires, and avoid excessive labor to harmonize Qi and Blood, thereby protecting pregnancy from pathogenic interference. Otherwise, at conception, any imbalance in care leads to internal weakness and external frailty, failing to sustain Qi and Form, resulting in disease. Eating rabbit meat may cause cleft lip; eating dog meat may cause muteness; eating mixed fish may cause skin sores, all due to dietary indiscretion. Great fright damages Heart Qi leading to epilepsy; insufficient Kidney Qi leads to craniotabes (delayed closure of fontanelles); Spleen-Stomach disharmony leads to emaciation; deficient Heart Qi leads to spiritual insufficiency, all caused by Qi and Blood imbalance. If these principles are understood and applied, pathogens will find no foothold. This is how reproduction depends on mutual conditions. Thus it is said: "Heaven does not act without Man." (The above four points are recorded in *Fu Ren Liang Fang*).
*Mai Jing* states: "Yin pulse pulsating strongly, distinct from Yang, indicates pregnancy." Pulsating means close. The Yin pulse is proximal inferiorly, while the Yang pulse emerges distinctly superiorly; seeing Yang within Yin indicates Yang imparting and Yin transforming, legally indicating pregnancy. It also states: "A markedly active Shaoyin pulse indicates pregnancy." The Hand Shaoyin corresponds to the Heart, and the Foot Shaoyin to the Kidney. The Heart governs Blood, the Kidney governs Essence. When Essence and Blood intersect and consciousness implants, pregnancy occurs. Wang Shi said: "Excessive Taichong pulse with deficient Qi is the method for lactation." A pulse at the Chi position that does not cease upon pressure indicates pregnancy. *Nan Jing* states: "There are two Kidneys; the left is the Kidney, the right is the Ming Men (Gate of Life). Ming Men stores Essence in men and connects to the Bao Gong in women. If the pulses at the three positions are equal in floating and sinking depth, and unceasing upon pressure, it indicates pregnancy. Initially, the Cun pulse is slight and small, with five breaths per pulse beat; by three months, the Chi pulse becomes rapid. A slippery and rapid pulse that disperses upon light pressure indicates three months of gestation. A pulse that does not disperse upon heavy pressure but is rapid without slipperiness indicates five months. In the fourth month of pregnancy, to determine sex: a rapid Left pulse indicates a male, a rapid Right pulse indicates a female; both rapid indicate twins. Another method: obtaining a Taiyin pulse indicates a male, a Taiyang pulse indicates a female. Taiyin pulse is deep, Taiyang pulse is superficial. Another method: Deep and solid Left pulse indicates male, floating and large Right pulse indicates female; both deep and solid indicate twin males; both floating and large indicate twin females. Another method: Larger Left Chi pulse indicates male, larger Right Chi pulse indicates female; both large indicate twins, appearing solid. Another method: Both sides floating and large indicate twin males; otherwise, female may appear male. Both sides deep indicate twin females; otherwise, male may appear female. Another method: Have the pregnant woman walk facing south and call her; turning head left indicates male, right indicates female. Similarly, when she is urinating, have her husband call from behind; left turn is male, right turn is female. Also, a nodule in the left breast indicates male, in the right breast indicates female. When approaching delivery, the pulse becomes floating and large, accompanied by abdominal pain radiating to the lower back, indicating imminent birth. Any deviation from the regular pulse (Li Jing) accompanied by abdominal pain indicates labor. Another method: If the pulse deviates, feeling symptoms at midnight results in delivery by noon.
Prescriptions
Yan Tai San (Test Fetus Powder): For amenorrhea lasting three months. (Check if Chi pulse remains active; if so, it is pregnancy.) Rhizoma Chuanxiong powder, one qian per dose, taken on an empty stomach with mugwort decoction. Feeling slight movement in the abdomen indicates pregnancy. If no movement after one day, it is not pregnancy but menstrual stagnation.

If the mother is fearful/anxious, this syndrome often occurs. *Chan Bao* says: Heart-Lung deficient heat or phlegm accumulation in chest. Irritation at three months is just heat; irritation from phlegm-fluid involves spitting saliva and food aversion. Generally, retained phlegm/fluid, cold-heat struggle, severe vomiting leads to restless fetus.
