Human beings exist between heaven and earth, none of whom do not possess a "Taiji" (Supreme Ultimate) within themselves. When Taiji moves, Yang is generated; when it is still, Yin is generated. The Dao of Qian (Heaven) forms the male, and the Dao of Kun (Earth) forms the female. The essence of the father and the blood of the mother constitute the way of odd and even numbers of Yin and Yang. Therefore, when essence is abundant, it becomes vigorous; when full, it overflows. This is the law of waxing and waning. The conception of a fetus results from the combination of male and female essence and blood. The male belongs to Yang and symbolizes Qian, while the female belongs to Yin and symbolizes Kun. Kun nourishes life; Yang is active and thus capable of giving, while Yin is static and thus capable of receiving. Movement and stillness must interplay, and Yin and Yang must meet at a specific time for pregnancy to occur. Those seeking offspring must first observe whether the meridians and menstruation are harmonious. If not, medication must be used to regulate them. Once the meridians are regulated, human conduct should correspond to this state so as not to miss the optimal timing. A saying goes: "Among thirty days, there are two and a half [optimal days]; you must calculate around the twenty-eighth or twenty-ninth day. When red flow covers the ground, it is a good period; if menstruation is overdue, panic is in vain. In vain effort wastes labor; seek residual red among trees. If you understand that flowers must bloom to bear fruit, why worry that osmanthus will not cluster?" This refers to the time just after menstruation ends, when Metal and Water energies begin to grow. At this moment, the uterus is open, which is the time for fertilization and conception, the moment of perfect harmony. After this prime period, the uterus closes and cannot accept conception. However, the distinction between male and female involves subtle principles. For instance, one to three days after menstruation ends, new blood is not yet abundant; if essence surpasses blood, conception yields a male. From the fourth to sixth day, new blood gradually increases; if blood surpasses essence, conception yields a female. It is also said: If Yin blood arrives first and Yang essence follows later, the blood opens to wrap the essence, and the essence enters to become the root. With Yin outside and Yang inside, the image of the Kan trigram is formed, and the male form is created. If Yang essence enters first and Yin blood participates later, the essence opens to wrap the blood, and the blood enters to reside in the root. With Yin inside and Yang outside, the image of the Li trigram is formed, and the female form is created. Generally, marital intercourse should be chosen on auspicious days: Jia and Yi, Yin and Mao days in Spring; Bing and Ding, Ji and Wu days in Summer; Geng and Xin, Shen and You days in Autumn; Ren and Gui, Hai and Zi days in Winter; Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei days in the four seasons. The woman must feel arousal internally, achieving harmony between Yin and Yang and smooth flow of essence and blood. Intercourse performed after midnight, during the time of vital energy generation, ensures pregnancy, successful nurturing, and robust, virtuous, long-lived offspring. During intercourse, neither man nor woman should be furious, drunk, or full; they should avoid roasted, fried, spicy, and hot foods, and refrain from using other methods to stimulate desire. One must strictly avoid intercourse on the days of New Moon (Shuo), Full Moon (Wang), First Quarter (Xian), Last Quarter, and month-end (Hui); during wind, rain, thunder, lightning; when sun or moon lacks light; under rainbow or shifting stars; beneath stars; in temples; near wells, stoves, corpses, or coffins. Even if conception occurs, it is not auspicious. Be extremely cautious. After a woman conceives, she should maintain joy and forget worries, move her Qi and blood, and nurture the fetal origin. She should cut off desires early, regulate diet, keep away from the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Sorrow, Fear, Fright) internally, and avoid the Six Evils (Wind, Cold, Summer-heat, Dampness, Dryness, Fire) externally. Her nature should be quiet rather than restless; her body should move rather than remain idle; her taste should prefer cool rather than hot; her food should be warm rather than cold. She should not stand, sit, walk, or lie down for too long. She should also avoid rich, sweet, fried, greasy, spicy, sour, salty foods, fruits, fish, turtles, foxes, rabbits, pigeons, and sparrows. Thus, she avoids conditions such as fetal leakage, fetal pain, fetal movement with bleeding, submolar edema, eclampsia, malpresentation, breech birth, and intrauterine fetal death. After birth, she avoids fetal heat, fetal cold, fetal obesity, fetal weakness, fetal fright, and fetal jaundice. If a pregnant woman does not follow these rules, before delivery she may experience irregular fetal movement, and after delivery, persistent fetal toxins, leading to myriad diseases. As the Ancients Kings stated, women in ancient times, when pregnant, did not sleep on their sides, sat without leaning, stood without limping, ate no strange flavors, did not eat meat cut improperly, did not sit on mats arranged improperly, did not look at evil colors, did not listen to obscene sounds, did not speak arrogant words, and at night had blind men recite poems and discuss righteous matters. Their children were born with proper features and outstanding talent. These words surely have profound meaning. This is why ancients lived long and few children died young. I have seen some women of gentle disposition who, during pregnancy, restrained their oral desires, gave birth to healthy children rarely affected by smallpox, which can serve as an example. Should not modern pregnant women be cautious?
Treating women's fertility depends entirely on regulating menstruation and strengthening the Spleen, ensuring abundant Qi and Blood, harmonizing menstrual cycles, removing jealousy, and taking formulas for conception, naturally resulting in pregnancy.
Obese women unable to conceive often have fat membranes blocking the Uterus, preventing menstruation; phlegm-resolving agents can be used.
Emaciated women unable to conceive often lack blood in the Uterus and fail to gather Essence; Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) and other blood-nourishing medicines can be used.
Formulas:
Tiaojing Zhongyu Tang (Regulating Menstruation and Jade-Nurturing Decoction) (Formula of Yao Shaocan): Infertility in women is often caused by injury from the Seven Emotions, leading to deficient Blood and excessive Qi, irregular menstruation (early or late, heavy or light, pale like water or purple like clots), metrorrhagia, leukorrhea, abdominal pain, or cold deficiency of the Uterus preventing conception. This formula is effective.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, wine-washed, 4 qian) Nanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, 4 qian) Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 2 qian) Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, wine-washed, 6 qian) Baifu (Poria, peeled, 3 qian) Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 3 qian) Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi, stir-fried, 3 qian) Wuzhuyu (Fructus Evodiae Officinalis, stir-fried, 4 qian) Guanzi (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae, 2 qian) Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Secati, processed, 3 qian) Danpi (Cortex Moutan Radicis, 3 qian) Yanhusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis Tuber, 3 qian) Shuai (Herba Artemisiae Argyi Preparata, 2 qian)
If menstruation is late and pale, add Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), Ganjiang, and Shuai. If early by 3-5 days and purple, no modification needed.
Process the above into four doses. Add 3 slices of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), boil 1.5 bowls of water until 1 bowl remains. Take warm on an empty stomach. Re-boil dregs. Start taking on the day menstruation begins, one dose per day. After finishing the medicine, intercourse should ensure pregnancy. Even if not pregnant, menstruation will return on schedule. This formula is highly reliable; do not neglect it.
Xiantian Guiyi Tang (Primordial Unity Returning Decoction) (Formula of Wang Bingxian):
Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 8 qian) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, bran-fried, 1 liang) Baifu (Poria, peeled, 1 liang) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, 4 qian) Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, 1 liang) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 1.2 liang) Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Recens, wine-washed, 1 liang) Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 8 qian) Sharen (Fructus Amomi Rotundus, stir-fried, 7 qian) Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi, 7 qian) Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 6 qian) Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae, wine-fried, 8 qian) Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Ternatae, soup-soaked, 7 qian) Danpi (Cortex Moutan Radicis, bone removed, 7 qian)
Divide the above fourteen ingredients into ten doses. Add 3 slices of Shengjiang, boil 2 zhong of water. Take on an empty stomach. Re-boil dregs. Before menstruation starts, take five doses before bed, then the remaining five doses. Effect is immediate upon completion. If no other illness, follow this formula. If other illnesses exist, modify as follows: When menstruation is regular and pulse harmonious, pregnancy occurs.
For chronic cold Uterus infertility, add Ganjiang and Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi) 5 qian each. How to know it is cold? The husband feels it during intercourse. If very cold, moxa Qidant point (CV4, 3 cun below umbilicus) seven moxibustion cones; highly effective.
For excessive heat in Uterus damaging fetus, add Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), and Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) 6 qian each. How to know it is hot? The husband feels it.
For leukorrhea, white discharge, or turbid urine, commonly called lower cold but actually due to deficiency and sinking of turbid Qi, add Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae) 1 liang, Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) 5 qian, or double Banxia. If unable to take medicine, moxa Zhongji (CV3, 4 cun below umbilicus) seven cones; very effective. For stagnant Qi, add Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) 3 qian.
For chronic deficiency sweating or aversion to cold/fever, add Huangqi (Radix Astragali) and Rougui. For cough, add Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini) and Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae) 4 qian each. For labor fever and dry blood, add Chaihu and Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis). For severe fatigue with backache, moxa Gohuang (BL43) seven cones each.
For reduced appetite, double Baizhu and Chenpi, add Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) and Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) stir-fried 5 qian each. For obese patients with phlegm blocking Uterus, add Nanting (Rhizoma Arisaematis Cum Bile) and Sanleng (Rhizoma Sparganii) 6 qian each.
For lower abdominal pain before menstruation indicating blood stasis, add Taoren (Semen Persicae) and Honghua (Flos Carthami) 4 qian each. If ineffective, remove Renshen, add Wulingzhi (Faeces Tamandanae) 6 qian (half fried, half raw), and Rushi (Resina Burserae) 3 qian. For leg/lower back pain, add Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae) 1.2 liang, Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii) 3 qian, Taoren 4 qian. For pain after menstruation indicating deficiency, add Shudihuang 6 qian, Danggui 8 qian, Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis) 3 qian. For masses in abdomen/flanks, remove Niuxi, add Sanleng, Ezhu (Rhizoma Curcumae Longae) 6 qian each, Taoren, Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) 5 qian each. For first five doses, add Binglang (Semen Arecae) 5 qian. For "ghost fetus" (pseudo-pregnancy due to Qi wrapping Essence without Blood), use pills containing Taoren, Ganqi (Lignum Resinae Boswelliae), Rougui, Shexiang (Moschus), and Mercury to expel it. Then resume Guiyi Tang to regulate menstruation and conceive.
For early menstruation, add Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) 5 qian, Chao Puhuang (Pollen Typhae) 5 qian. For late menstruation, add Ganjiang and Mudanpi 5 qian each. For metrorrhagia, add Lianpengke Hui (Ash of Lotus Pod Shell) 5 qian, Baizhi 8 qian, Zhu Gutou Hui (Ash of Pig Bone) 6 qian, Shuai 3 qian, Huangqin 5 qian. For wind-cold-damp pain, add Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae) 3 qian, Qianghuo 7 qian, Rushi, Moyao (Resina Mastiches) 5 qian each, or Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Lanceae). For heat pain, add Huangbai. For heart/abdominal pain, add Dafupi (Pericarpium Arecae) and Muxiang 3 qian each, Binglang 5 qian. For scanty/difficult urination, add Zhuling (Polyporus) and Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis Orientalis); do not overuse to avoid depleting Kidney Qi. For virgins with stagnant menses (Tiangui irregularity), add Liuju Nu (Herba Siegesbeckiae) 6 qian in the previous formula; if ineffective, add Weimao (Herba Epimedii) 3 qian; highly effective.
Shenxian Fuyi Dan (Immortal Supplementing Pill) (Transmitted by Xu Xianfu):
Xiangfu Mi (Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi) 1 jin, soak in Tongbian (Child's Urine), take out, wash with water, dry, and powder.
