External Therapies
Garlic-Separated Moxibustion (Ge Suan Jiu Fa)
Indication: All kinds of sores and toxins, whether severely painful, painless, or numb. If painful, moxa until pain ceases; if painless, moxa until pain arises. The toxin disperses with the fire. Fire promotes circulation and draws out stagnant toxins; this is a "following treatment" method.
Peel a garlic clove, slice it to a thickness of about three cash coins, and place it on the sore. Place a moxa cone on the garlic and moxibustiate for three cones (zhuang). Replace the garlic and continue moxibustiation. For unformed sores, they will dissipate; for formed sores, their severity will be reduced, preventing further harm. If the sore is large, mash garlic and spread it on the affected area, place moxa on top, and burn. Replace when the garlic spoils. If there is no pain, inability to suppurate, or failure to rise, especially in severe cases, moxibustiation should be increased. If after moxibustiation there is still no pain, no suppuration, and no rising, it is incurable, indicating extreme deficiency of Qi and Blood.
Scallion-Ironing Method (Cong Xi Fa)
Indication: Swelling masses in the limbs of debilitated individuals, whether painful or not; limb pain due to wind invading meridians; tendon spasms and bone pain in the four limbs; also treats deep abscesses (Liuzu), traumatic swelling and pain from falls or beatings, stabbing pain, breast inflammation caused by infant sucking (Chuiru), Yin-type breast carbuncle abdominal pain, and cold extremities.
Finely chop scallion heads, pound until mashed, stir-fry until cooked, and apply to the affected area. Replace when cool. Re-ironing stops swelling and pain immediately; the effect is miraculous.
Fermented Soybean Cake (Douchi Bing)
Indication: Sores that are swollen and hard without ulceration, or ulcerated but not healing; also treats all stubborn and malignant sores.
Grind Jiangxi light fermented soybeans (Danchidou) into powder. Mix with saliva to form cakes the size of a coin and thickness of three cash coins. Place on the affected area, put a moxa cone on the cake, and moxibustiate. Replace when dry. For back sores, mix with mouthwash to form a cake, cover the area, place moxa on top, and moxibustiate. Unformed sores will dissipate; formed sores will have their toxicity reduced. Ineffectiveness is due to Qi and Blood deficiency.
Hongbao Dan (Red Treasure Pill) [Formula from Master Xiyuan]
Indication: All kinds of swelling and toxins; dispels blood stasis and reduces swelling; treats burns, scalds, metal injuries, trauma, and uncontrollable bleeding. Effect is miraculous.
Trichosanthes Root (Tianhuafen, 3 liang), Angelica Dahurica Root (Baizhi, 2 liang), Red Peony Root (Chishaoyao, 2 liang), Curcuma Aromatica Rhizome (Yujin, 1 liang).

Grind into fine powder and stir into the prepared ointment. Store in porcelain. For stubborn sores, first wash frequently with hot decoction of Sichuan pepper, fine tea, and mugwort leaves until clean. Seal puncture holes with oil paper.
