Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Baifuling (Poria with Hostwood), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (5 qian).
Grind the above herbs into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add one cup of water and three slices of fresh ginger, decoct until reduced to 70%, and take warm; or take by infusing in boiling water.
Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage), Wenyi (Warm Epidemic), Fengshi (Wind-Dampness), Fengxuan (Wind Vertigo), Juquan (Spasm and Curling), Fengtan (Wind-Phlegm), Tengtou (Headache), Muxuan (Dizziness of Eyes), Sizhi Tong (Pain in Four Limbs), Zenghan Zhuangre (Aversion to Cold with High Fever), Xiangqiang (Stiffness of Neck), Jingtong (Eye Pain).
Zhao Yuhuang said: In the southeast, where the land is low and damp, any cold-like illness is often indiscriminately called Shanghan (Cold Damage). One must not know that "Shang" refers to injury of righteous Qi in the middle, while "Han" refers to deep-seated pathogenic Cold damaging Yang Qi. The method should attend to warming and tonifying; otherwise, it leads to demise.
Hu Tianxi said: When qi appears out of season, only those with deficiency of both Qi and Blood are susceptible. Cold lodges in Ying (Nutritive Level), Wind lodges in Wei (Defensive Level);峻剂 (Decisive/Strong Agents) cannot be used, so slightly from... enters... Tosan Powder... connects to Lung... (Note: Original text is severely fragmented here).
Main indications: External contraction of Cold Evil during three seasons, internal injury from raw/cold food causing fever, as well as Pi Xie (Spleen Diarrhea) and Chang Feng (Intestinal Wind/Bleeding).
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (3 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (2 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian).
For the above three herbs: if there is no sweat, use Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), add Congbai (Allii Cepae Bulbus) and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens); if there is sweat, use Baizhu and Shengjiang.
Ke Yunbo said: This is Wang Haicang's得意 (favorite/successful) formula, modeled on the principles of Zhang Zhongjing's Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) and Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), but formulated as a mild agent. However, this is a Taiyin (Taiyin Channel) formula, Nei Jing (Inner Canon)... warming... stable... fire goes... use formula... (Note: Original text is severely fragmented here).
Treats sudden stroke with loss of consciousness, deviation of mouth and eyes, hemiplegia, as well as Tan Jue (Phlegm Syncope) and Qi Jue (Qi Syncope).
Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma Preparatum) (1 liang, raw use), Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix Preparata) (peeled, raw use, 5 qian), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) (peeled, raw use, 5 qian), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (2 qian).
Take 5 qian per dose, decoct with ginger and water. Add Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) 1 liang.
Ke Yunbo said: Wind is a Yang Evil. If wind contains no cold, it harms people little; harm becomes severe only when wind carries cold. For mild cold located in the exterior, sweating... regulation... deficiency... Mr. Zhai truly... carefully熟 (familiarize) Yin... 5 qian, must... how can it rescue... Removing Chuanwu and Fuzi from this formula yields Xingxiang San (Arisaema and Aucklandia Powder), which is sufficient for treating Tan Jue (Phlegm Syncope) and Qi Jue (Qi Syncope).
