九味羌活汤(一名冲和汤) 四时发散之通剂(合论一条)
羌活 防风 川芎 白芷 细辛 苍术 黄芩 甘草 生地
加生姜三片,葱白三茎,水煎服。
Treats wind-phlegm obstruction where phlegm cannot be expelled, with a sawing sound in the throat, or swelling and fullness due to dampness invasion.
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, large ones, 14 pieces) Zhuya Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus Spina, one stick, roasted) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian) Baifan (Alumen, 2 qian).
The above four herbs are ground into powder. Mix a small amount of fresh ginger juice with one cup of warm water, add one qian of the powder, and administer by gavage. If the patient vomits phlegm and saliva, they will regain consciousness.
Ke Yunbo stated: To attack pathogenic factors, there are three methods: sweating, vomiting, and purging. Zhang Zhongjing established two formulas for emetic therapy—Zhizi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction) and Gouti San (Melon Seed Powder)—to guide heat pathogens outwards and rectify qi stagnation.
*Jin Gui Yao Lue* records:
For fire-ni (rebellious qi) causing upward rushing of qi and unsmoothness of the throat, this formula is the primary treatment.
Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 7 sheng) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 sheng) Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 3 liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang) Jingmi (Oryza Sativa Semen, 3 he) Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus, 12 pieces).
The above six herbs are boiled in one to two dou of water until six sheng remain. Take one sheng warm each time, three times during the day and once at night.
Yu Jiayan stated: This formula is an excellent method for treating dryness of stomach fluids and defluxion of deficient fire. Using fire-descending drugs causes fire to rise further; using cold drugs... For all lung diseases, life depends on Stomach Qi, and death occurs without it. Stomach Qi is the mother Qi of the Lung. The herb Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) implies that the Lung relies on its cooling nature, recognizing cooling as the mother of the Lung. Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) implies that the Lung relies on its ability to resolve phlegm, recognizing phlegm-resolution as the mother of the Lung. However, repeatedly applying these to cases of fire-ni with upward qi rush and throat unsmoothness yields no effect, making their names inappropriate. Who would know that Zhang Zhongjing's brilliant method lies in using Maimendong, Renshen, Gancao, Dazao, and Jingmi to greatly tonify Middle Qi to generate fluids. Within this fluid-generating group, Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) with its acrid-warm nature is added to open the stomach, move fluids, and assist moistening the lungs. Is this merely using its ability to soothe the throat and descend rebellious qi? Regarding its ability to soothe the throat and descend qi, this is not actually Banxia's merit, but rather the skillful application of Banxia.
Jiuwei Qianghuo Tang (Nine-Ingredient Notopterygium Decoction) (Also known as Chonghe Tang): A universal formula for dispersing pathogens in all four seasons (Combined discussion, one entry).
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix).
Add three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and three stalks of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), decoct in water, and take orally.
