When Liver Qi and Heart Qi are excessive, Wind pathogen and Blood collide with each other, leading to obstruction and astringency in the Large Intestine (Large Intestine). Symptoms include bitter taste in the mouth, rough tongue coating, and in severe cases, dry mouth with a sticky sensation. Urine is red, accompanied by headache and blurred vision. The pulse at all six positions is flooding, large, and excess. Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction) is indicated.
Ingredients: Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, peeled and tip removed), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shu Dihuang, 8 zhu), Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia, 2 zhu).
Grind the above into a coarse powder. Take after meals or at any time. Decoct with one cup of water and one stalk of scallion white until reduced to eight-tenths. Strain and take the decoction.
When Lung Qi is hyperactive and obstructed upwards, Qi steams upward and fails to transmit downwards, causing heat accumulation and constipation in the Large Intestine (Large Intestine). The pulse is floating and rapid; the Chi Ze position pulse is short, and the Cun Kou position pulse is large. Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction) is indicated, added with Astagali Herba (Ziwan) and Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), each one fen, which yields good results.
When Cold-Dampness prevails, the Large Intestine (Large Intestine) may paradoxically become obstructed. Classical texts state that when Yin Qi fails to function, feces become hard. This occurs because Earth Qi does not govern its functions, causing Spleen and Stomach transport to stagnate, resulting in failure of transmission. The symptoms present characteristics of both Water and Earth, and the pulse reflects this as well. Dafupi San (Areca Peel Powder) is indicated.
Ingredients: Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 1 liang), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingpi), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Dongxiong), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Alpiniae Katsumadai Semen (Doukou, each half liang), Costi Rhizoma (Muxiang), Arecae Semen (Binglang, each 4 zhu).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Take three qianbi per dose, at any time. Decoct with one cup of water until reduced to eight-tenths. Take the decoction including the dregs.
When Yuan Qi (Primal Qi) is deficient, Kidney Water is empty, and the Stomach lacks fluids, the Large Intestine (Large Intestine) becomes astringent and slow. The pulse at all six positions is faint and deficient. Congrong Zhou (Cistanche Porridge) is indicated.
Ingredients: Cistanches Herba (Roucongrou, 1 fen), Rice (one handful). First wash the Cistanche thoroughly, cut it into very fine pieces, and cook it with rice using more than two bowls of water until a thin porridge is formed. After cooking, add a little scallion and mix with a small amount of salt and soy sauce. Take three to four bowls on an empty stomach.
The condition of Small Urinary Organ (Small Bladder) obstruction is difficult to identify. It may manifest as Lin syndrome (strangury), Long syndrome (difficulty in urination), or astringency. There may be pain or no pain. When Liver and Heart Qi are abundant, excess, and hot, and Small Intestine Qi is deficient, heat qi flows into the Bladder, resulting in the disease of red and astringent urine in the Small Urinary Organ (Small Bladder). The pulse is rapid and lightly wiry; the Chi Ze position pulse is wiry and long, slightly tight; or the Heart pulse is long. All these indicate this disease. This prescription is indicated.
Ingredients: Poria (Fuling, half liang), Ophiopogonis Tuber (Mendong, heart removed), Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie, 3 zhu).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Take after meals. Decoct three qianbi with one cup of water and one stalk of scallion white. Take the decoction including the dregs.
Another formula: Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) is indicated.
When Heat in the Liver Channel causes red and painful urination in the Small Urinary Organ (Small Bladder), and the pulse at all six positions is wiry, urgent, and long, accompanied by chills and shivering, Mandzing Tang (Vitex Decoction) is indicated.
Ingredients: Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang).
Divide the above ingredients equally. Decoct according to the previous method. Take after meals.
When Dampness and Cold prevail and jointly invade the Heart, Heart Qi moves upward, preventing urination. The Small Urinary Organ (Small Bladder) feels uncomfortable. Xiaozhu Caodoukou San (Atractylodes and Cardamom Powder) is indicated, along with Dachong Tang (Large Ligustici Decoction).
Ingredients: Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Dachong, 1 liang), Curcumae Rhizoma (Peng'ezhu, half liang), Costi Rhizoma (Muxiang, 4 qian), Poria (Fuling, half liang).
Grind the above into a fine powder. On an empty stomach, decoct three qianbi with one cup of water and a little salt. Take the decoction including the dregs.
When Yuan Qi (Primal Qi) is weak, Kidney Qi is insufficient, Bladder Qi is deficient, and the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) are deficient, men suffer from Hernia (Shan), and women suffer from Urinary Retention (Bi). This formula is indicated. The pulse shows movement at all six positions, being fine, rapid, and lightly wiry. the Kidney pulse is small, striking, and deep; the Bladder pulse is astringent and short.
Ingredients: Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi, 1 liang), Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum (Xuerong), Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma (Bixie), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Xiong, each half liang), Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Dihuang, 1 liang), Curcumae Rhizoma (Peng'ezhu), Halitum (Qingyan, each 1 fen).
Grind the Halitum (Qingyan) alone into a fine powder. Grind the remaining seven herbs into a fine powder. Use steamed dough as a binder to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50–70 pills on an empty stomach with clear soup.
