Yang Qi escaping outward manifests as sweating, while Yin fluids descending downward manifest as seminal emission. When the two Qi (Yin and Yang) become imbalanced, Yin deficiency leads to hyperactive heat. The brain is the sea of Marrow, and the abdomen belongs to the Supreme Yin; both are conditions where Yang invades Yin. However, when Yang Qi is in excess, it further reveals Yin weakness, unable to interact with and cling to Yang. Illness causes imbalance, and prolonged imbalance leads to consumption (Xu Lao). Through seated meditation and Qigong regulation, if Yin and Yang do not coordinate, the damage will not recover, which is quite worrying. Now, entering late autumn and winter, the weather becomes收敛 (restraining) and 肃杀 (desiccating), causing Yang Qi to leak and float outward. By evening, there is burning heat, always due to the damage and consumption of Yin Essence.
Prescription: Chuan Shi Hu (Dendrobium Officinale), Chao Zhi Mu (Fried Anemarrhena Rhizome), Nu Zhen Zi (Ligustrum Lucidum Fruit), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Nuo Dao Gen (Oryza Sativa Rootlet), Xiao Hei Dou Pi (Black Soybean Peel).
Another consultation: Nighttime fever is blazing; Yin deficiency is beyond doubt. However, previous use of exterior-dispersing methods caused Wei Yang (Defensive Yang) to leak; Shan Jian Jia (Pangolin Scales) has a penetrating nature that flows through tendons, subsequently leading to the robbery and depletion of Qi and Blood in the meridians. Internal damage fails to recover, and the defensive function of Wei Yang as a fence is empty. At this time, one can still hold half the ground. If this opportunity is missed, during the main command of Autumn Harvest and Winter Storage, the key lies in sealing and storing (Zhe Cang). Zhang Jiming said, "When Yuan Qi (Original Qi) has no place to return, heat burns," which is also correct.
Prescription: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), He Che (Placenta Humanum / Purple River Cartridge), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Chinensis Fruit), Lian Rou (Lotus Seed Plumule/Endosperm), Shan Yao (Dioscorea Oppata Rhizome), Fu Ling (Poria).
This year's long summer had prolonged heat, damaging True Yin. Late autumn weather is restraining, but unfortunately, the body's leakage has been excessive. Shortness of breath, turbid essence loss, Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst), and dizziness appear. The symptoms seen all relate to the Liver and Kidney. The pulse indicates damage gradually spreading from Yin to the Yangming Stomach collaterals. Appetite decreases, limbs lack strength. As Yu Yue (Yueren) stated, "Yin damage affecting Yang is the hardest to replenish." Indeed, treating disease is easy, but treating consumption is difficult.
Prescription: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Tian Dong (Asparagus Cochinchinensis Rhizome), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Glutinosa Root), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Nu Zhen Zi (Ligustrum Lucidum Fruit), Yuan Zhi (Polygala Tenuifolia Root).
The pulse is rapid and sinks into the Chi Ze point area. This indicates Yin Essence was not fully filled before leaking early, and Yang lost its ability to submerge. Sweating and shortness of breath occur; Dragon and Minister Fire burn internally, rising to the face and eyes. The Lung suffers steaming, causing sneezing and runny nose. Additionally, weak stomach and low food intake lead to turbid essence flowing downward, causing urethral pain. Liver Yang sucks Kidney Yin, leading to irritability and depression. Clearly, Kidney deficiency is depicted like a painting. It is proposed to use sentient substances to fill the essence, imitating the ancient method of alternating slippery and astringent therapies.
Prescription: Niu Gu Sui (Bovine Marrow), Zhu Gu Sui (Porcine Marrow), Yang Gu Sui (Ovine Marrow), Mi Jiao Jiao (Cervus Elaphus Cornus Gelatin), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Yu Rou (Cornus Officinalis Fruit), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Chinensis Fruit), Qian Shi (Euryale Seed), Hu Lian (Lotus Seed), Shan Yao (Dioscorea Oppata Rhizome), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Jin Ying Gao (Cherokee Rose Fruit Paste), Jiao Sui Wan (Gelatin and Marrow Pill).
This person lacked vigorous Jing-Qi in youth, causing the net-weaving protection of the Extraordinary Vessels to fail. The Classic says: "For insufficiency of form, warm with Qi; for insufficiency of essence, tonify with Flavor." Currently, food intake is normal. Flesh-and-blood substances can nourish; tonifying with flavor is best achieved through diet.
Prescription: Niu Gu Sui (Bovine Marrow), Yang Gu Sui (Ovine Marrow), Zhu Gu Sui (Porcine Marrow), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Gou Qi Zi (Lycium Barbarum Fruit), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Hu Lian (Lotus Seed), Qian Shi (Euryale Seed).
It is reported that heat rises from the left, extending to swelling behind and in front of the ears. The facial complexion is oily and bright, and the soles of the feet feel burning hot, occurring every afternoon until evening. In the morning, Cha Tiao San was used to diffuse upper Jiao stagnant heat, but it was ineffective. This is Liver-Kidney Yin Fire attacking the orifices, caused by male essence deficiency and Yang failing to descend and interact. The Classic states: "When using Yin-nourishing and filling herbs, one must assist with heavy-shelling sedatives." After trying this, sleep lasted the whole night. This illustrates the profound principle that Yang moves and Yin rests.
Prescription: Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Gui Ban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Yu Rou (Cornus Officinalis Fruit), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Chinensis Fruit), Fu Ling (Poria), Ci Shi (Magnetitum), Huang Bo (Phellodendron Amurense Bark), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Asphodeloides Rhizome), Zhu Gu Sui Wan (Porcine Marrow Pill).
Tangible blood was damaged due to traumatic injury, leaving Shen Qi (Spirit Qi) without support. During the winter season of storing Yang, Yang is weak and fears cold. The Extraordinary Vessels lack fluid, and Qi fails to circulate. Walking posture is slanted; memory is poor and confused. Are these not signs of internal deprivation of Essence and Qi? Approaching Da Xue (Major Snow), Pure Yin prevails without Yang, until Dong Zhi (Winter Solstice) when one Yang returns. Seeing this state of dispersion, and knowing the patient usually cannot tolerate warm tonics (indicating Original Qi should be vigorous), now it is a sign of exhausted Essence and Qi, deviating from this example.
Prescription: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Lu Rong (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum), Dang Gui Shen (Angelica Sinensis Root Tip), Chao Qi Zi (Stir-fried Lycium Barbarum Fruit), Fu Ling (Poria), Sha Yuan Zi (Astragali Complanati Semen).
Yin Essence leaks downward, while Yang Qi stagnates and overwhelms upward. The Tai Chong Mai (Thoroughfare Vessel) declines, Jue Qi (Jue Cold/Wind) rushes upward, suddenly causing epilepsy and syncope. Yin and Yang have lost their interaction and pairing, thus following Yang's rotation, Yang escapes via sweat. One should avoid sexual activity and live alone in a quiet room. The treatment method is to draw Yang from Yin, greatly sealing and firmly consolidating, prioritizing hibernation/storage. Effect can be seen in 100 days, and recovery in a year.
Prescription: Dan Cong Rong (Cistanche Deserticola), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Chinensis Fruit), Yuan Zhi (Polygala Tenuifolia Root), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Qian Shi (Euryale Seed), Jian Lian (Lotus Seed), Sheng Yang Yao Zi (Raw Sheep Kidney).
In consumptive tuberculosis (Lao Que), features are depleted, muscles waste, appetite decreases, stool is loose, accompanied by choking phlegm and sore throat. Those who understand medical principles would no longer use throat-clearing, lung-cooling, or Yin-nourishing methods. The patient describes that mental exertion worsens the illness, clearly indicating internal damage affecting Zhen Zang (True Organs). In winter cold, Yang is stored; if bodily Yang rises and fails to interact, and storage fails, how can one merely treat the symptom? That is superficial insight. It is reported that eating beyond a certain time causes painful diarrhea. The Classic says food reaches the small intestine, undergoes transformation and twisting; obstructions in the intestines are common. Since decoctions have ascending Qi, pills for gentle tonification are suitable. Zi Sheng Wan should be taken after meals.
Prescription: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Kan Qi (Umbilical Cord), Fu Ling (Poria), Hei Ke Jian Lian (Black-shell Lotus Seed), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Chinensis Fruit), Qian Shi (Euryale Seed), Shan Yao Jiang Wan (Dioscorea Rhizome Paste Pill).
Consumption for three years, severe decline of form and spirit. Appetite decreases and lacks taste, stool is loose. Cold arises from the back and limbs, heat blazes from the heart. Every cough causes convulsions in all vessels. Occasionally, ribs are pierced by pain. Various symptoms indicate deep disease transmission. Previously, Si Jun Zi Tang was discussed to nourish the spleen and stomach's harmonious Qi, adding Sang Ye (Mulberry Leaf) and Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) to benefit Shaoyang Wood-Fire, preventing Earth invasion. It was ineffective. One thinks that when the two Qi in the body become imbalanced, disease occurs. Now, pulse and symptoms show extreme damage; how can herbal medicines revive this? Treating only the disease offers little benefit. Qi-tonifying efficacy is low; reasoning should proceed from Ying (Nutritive) aspects. Low food intake and loose stool are unsuitable for cloying/nourishing drugs. Temporarily use Jing Yue's Li Yin Jian method, incorporating descending and securing agents. If the stomach does not recover appetite, it is hard to prescribe.
Prescription: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Qiu Shi (Autumn Stone), Shan Yao (Dioscorea Oppata Rhizome), Fu Ling (Poria), He Che Jiao Wan (Placenta Gelatin Pill).
Deep spring, earth Qi rises, Yang Qi activates. Racing or irregular eating/drinking constitutes labor injury. The Inner Classic says: "For labor, warm it." Labor causes physical vibration, injuring Yang Qi first. This "warm" means warming and nourishing, not aggressively advancing heat. Prolonged labor injury without elimination becomes consumption. The Inner Classic states: "For consumption, benefit it." Benefit means tonification. All tonics have warm Qi and sweet flavor, cultivating initial Yang. This is the governing principle for labor consumption. Spring disease unhealed by autumn, propose treating from the Middle Jiao. It is described that upon waking in the morning without consuming water/grain, coughing is severe. Stomach medicine sitting in the Central Palace is appropriate.
Prescription: Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Japonicus Tuber), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Jing Mi (Rice), Da Zao (Jujube Fruit).
Pulse is small on the left and deficient on the right. Back feels slightly cold, skin feels slightly cold. Phlegm is abundant, slight vomiting, appetite decreases, mouth lacks sweetness. This indicates weak Stomach Yang, Wei Qi unable to support. Occasional slight chills and fevers occur. Urine is short and red, stool is slightly loose. This is not an Excess pathogen. One must establish Middle Qi to maintain Ying and Wei. Dong Yuan (Li Dongyuan) said: "Bone is the root of Wei, Ying is the source of Spleen." Bias toward heat or cold is not the correct treatment.
Prescription: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Dang Gui Shen (Angelica Sinensis Root Tip stir-fried with rice), Gui Zhi Mu (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Bai Shao (White Peony Root stir-fried until scorched), Nan Zao (Southern Jujube).
Labor injures Yang Qi, refusing to recover. At the transition of autumn and winter, I follow Dong Yuan's method of Sweet and Warm. Originally, small effects were gained. Amidst public criticism, Chai Ge Zhi Po (Bupleurum, Kudzu, Immature Bitter Orange, Magnolia Bark) were administered. The two Qi scattered, connection failed to consolidate. Flashing Qi pain, epigastric fullness/knotting all result from declining Clear Yang. There is no established method for attacking pain. Only harmonizing and tonifying can allow Ying and Wei circulation to slow down and spirit to revive.
Prescription: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Chao Bai Shao (Stir-fried White Peony Root), Gui Xin (Cinnamon Heart), Zhi Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood).
Long-term residence and labor injury cause Bi obstruction in Qi distribution, making the clear orifices of the Upper Jiao unfavorable. Initial disease is in Qi; prolonged disease enters Blood. Body pain, yellow eyes, decreased appetite, emaciation. From patient illness to Original Deficiency, attack and tonification fail to cure. Thinking: Left ascent belongs to Liver, Right descent belongs to Lung. One must harmonize Qi and Blood, ensuring proper ascent and descent. If delayed further, stasis will worsen daily, forming organ accumulations.
Prescription: Xuan Fu Hua Tang (Inula Flower Decoction) plus Tao Ren (Peach Kernel), Gui Xu (Angelica Sinensis Root Tips), Lou Pi (Trichosanthes Peel).
Symptoms include hemoptysis and cough, followed by persistent evening fever. Menstruation continues. Infertility for six or seven years. Liver, Kidney, Chong, and Ren vessels are all damaged. Two Qi do not interact, prolonging into consumptive tuberculosis. Treatment focuses on securing and consolidating, encompassing leakage and escape.
Prescription: Xian He Che Jiao (Fresh Placenta Gelatin), Huang Bo (Phellodendron Amurense Bark), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Dan Cong Rong (Cistanche Deserticola), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Chinensis Fruit), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Honey Pill.
Pulse is rapid, slightly larger on the left. Right waist feels bound, legs are flaccid. Daybreak spontaneous sweating wakes the patient; dream-emission occurs with erotic dreams. Illness for half a year, vertebral segments 6-7 protrude. Self-reported dampness exposure from sitting/lying in study. If Six Evils cause disease, new pathogens resolve themselves. Examining color and pulse deduces the disease: innate constitution was originally weak, never fully vigorous. Liver Blood and Kidney Essence were injured, causing lack of operational power in the Eight Extraordinary Vessels. This is a bone-tendon disease, internally corresponding to Essence-Blood damage.
Prescription: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Lu Rong (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum), Qi Zi (Lycium Barbarum Fruit), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Bo Hui Xiang (Fennel Fruit), Zi Yi Hu Tao Rou (Walnut Kernel with Purple Skin), Sheng Xiong Yang Nei Shen (Raw Male Sheep Kidney).
Married too young in youth, Essence not yet filled before leaking. Last year diarrhea, followed by phlegm-cough. Food intake decreased, body and muscles wasted daily. Deep autumn sore throat indicates internal lack of Kidney Essence. Dragon and Thunder within Yin flash uncontrollably. With autumn's descending command, storage function fails. Next year Grain Rain, flowers bloom everywhere; this illness will be critical.
Prescription: Qiu Shi Ban Ren Shen (Autumn Stone mixed with Ginseng), Sheng Zi Shi Ying (Raw Purple Quartz), Zi Yi Hu Tao Rou (Walnut Kernel with Purple Skin), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Nu Zhen Shi (Ligustrum Lucidum Fruit), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Chinensis Fruit).
Man's unfulfilled longing causes Yin Fire to burn internally, Five Fluids daily depleted. Only solitary Yang rises, steaming upper orifices, losing the meaning of Jiao Tai (Interaction of Heart and Kidney). This is not an external pathogen. Whenever Yin Essence is exhausted, Stomach must be strong; consuming grain generates Yin. Now, throat, nose, ear, and eye orifices have long suffered Yin Fire pressure. Cold-cooling and clearing only adjust Fire among the Six Qi, but Zang True Yin Fire is swift and unstoppable like lightning; cooling will certainly not dispel disease. Good reason: internal emptiness of Essence and Blood, herbal medicines cannot generate Essence and fill fluids.
Prescription: Zhu Gu Sui (Porcine Marrow), E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Chuan Hu (Dendrobium Officinale), Tian Dong (Asparagus Cochinchinensis Rhizome), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Glutinosa Root).
