[Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi)]
Non-toxic. It primarily benefits men's sexual function, stabilizes Heart Qi (vital energy of the Heart), stops palpitations and fright, tonifies essence (Jing), removes obstructive Qi in the epigastrium, clears heat from the skin, and treats yellowing of the face and eyes. Long-term use improves complexion and prolongs life.
It primarily tonifies essence, supplements Yin Qi (nutritive energy), stops deficiency-induced nocturnal emission. It grows in the valleys of Mount Tai and Wanqu. The roots and leaves are harvested in April and dried in the shade. (It acts synergistically with Poria (Fuling) and Okra seeds (Dongguazi).) The original text of *Shennong Bencao Jing* states: Polygalae Radix, bitter in taste, warm in nature. It primarily treats cough with reverse flow of Qi damaging the middle Jiao, tonifies deficiencies, eliminates pathogenic factors, unblocks the nine orifices, enhances wisdom, makes the ears and eyes acute, improves memory, and strengthens willpower.
[Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie)]
Salty in taste, non-toxic. It primarily treats deficiency and damage, five types of fatigue, eliminates fullness and masses in the five Zang organs, arouses Yin Qi, stops seminal emission, treats thirst and diabetes (Xiaoke), strangury (Linli), and drives out stagnant water in the Bladder. Bian Que said: "Excessive consumption causes eye problems in patients." Also known as Jixie. It grows in Runan. The roots are harvested in May, June, and August, and dried in the shade. (It acts synergistically with Clam Shell (Haige) and Dark-brown Clam Shell (Wenge).)

Salty in taste, non-toxic. It primarily treats severe wind diseases (severe wind disorders), lack of lactation, dystocia, and strengthens Yin Qi. Long-term use makes the body light and agile. Harvested in May.
[Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shuyu/Shanyao)]
Sweet in taste, non-toxic. It primarily treats wind-bi syndrome (wind-damp obstruction), thirst and diabetes, tonifies Kidney Qi, strengthens Yin, tonifies deficiencies, and eliminates damp pathogens. Long-term use gives a luster to the face, prevents heat sensation, and strengthens Yin. In Qin and Chu regions, it is called Yuyan; in Zheng and Yue regions, it is called Tuzhi. It grows on Mount Songgao. The roots are harvested in February and August and sun-dried. (Ganoderma (Zizhi) serves as its assistant herb.) The original text of *Shennong Bencao Jing* states: Dioscoreae Rhizoma, sweet in taste, warm in nature. Long-term use makes the ears and eyes acute.
[Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua)]
Sweet in taste, non-toxic.
