For wind-pain in the upper body, use Baoyuan Decoction (Tonifying Qi and Yang Decoction) and Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) with added blood-cooling and wind-dispersing herbs; for pain in the lower body, use Baoyuan Decoction and Siwu Tang with added Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), or Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma). If it is a deficiency pattern, modify Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Rescue Life Decoction). Wancangsha (Bombyx Batryticatus, Mulberry Silkworm Feces) clears wind-heat from the Upper Jiao and is suitable regardless of whether the pathogen is on the left or right.
Gout (Tongfeng) all belongs to Fire. Wind excess causes pain, wind-phlegm causes swelling, wind-cold causes stagnation, and wind-dampness causes painful conditions. Ancient practitioners used Duhuo Jisheng Tang (Notopterygium and Taxillus Decoction); modern practitioners should use Qianghuo Xuduan Tang (Notopterygii Rhizomatis et Radicis and Dipsaci Radix Decoction). This is because Sangjisheng (Taxilli Caulis et Folium) and Chuan Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) are supreme herbs for dispelling wind and overcoming dampness. Recently, people have been using Sangjisheng harvested from peach, plum, elm, or maple trees as substitutes, not realizing that if Sangjisheng does not parasitize mulberry trees, its nature becomes hot, damaging blood and qi. Therefore, a separate formula named Qianghuo Xuduan Tang was created, which is also effective in treating this condition.
Verified Case:
A patient suffered from Lijie Feng (severe joint pain) pain. Using Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Yiyiren (Coicis Semen), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Cansha (Bombyx Batryticatus), the treatment nourished blood and benefited tendons, resulting in a cure.
Wind is the chief of all diseases, and Lefeng (Hansen's Disease/Leprosy) is particularly caused by both internal and external injuries. Lefeng, commonly known as "Big Hemp Wind," occurs when damp-heat fills the orifices of the Zang-Fu organs, making it one of the most difficult conditions to treat. Dampness relates to the Spleen, and wind relates to the Liver. When healthy qi declines, the Spleen is harmed by the Liver; as wind-dampness spreads daily, healthy qi becomes increasingly deficient. Attempting to attack the pathogen damages healthy qi further, while tonification exacerbates the pathogenic factors. Only acupuncture can be used for treatment. Needling must be performed at the onset, targeting areas on the face, hands, feet, or numbness, which can calm the condition. Medicinal herbs such as Qishe (Agkistrodon), Dafengzi (Aleuritidis Fructus), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) are used; there is a recovery rate of one or two out of ten cases.
In Lefeng, skin and flesh ulcerate and swell due to damp-heat filling the sweat pores. Kushen Wan (Sophorae Flavescentis Pill) is the primary treatment.
Kushen Wan (Also treats Red and White Vitiligo):
Kushen (Stemonae Radix) (one jin), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Cang'erzi (Xanthii Fructus), Huma (Sesami Fructus) (each eight liang), Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix Preparata), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (each one and a half liang), Heishe (Black Snake) (all ground into powder, formed into pills with wine paste, taken with tea or wine).
Another Formula:
Kushen (Stemonae Radix) (seven qian and half liang), Cang'erzi (Xanthii Fructus), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (wine-fried, each two liang), Huangjing (Polygonati Rhizoma), Fuping (Urticae Herba) (each one liang), Wushe (Aspis Formosae Venenum) (soaked in wine and taken orally).
