Feiyang Throat (Flying Throat)
This condition is caused by the upward congestion of wind-heat pathogenic factors, leading to redness and swelling in the throat, obstruction of qi flow, and difficulty in swallowing. The swelling spreads from the uvula to fill the mouth. This is a malignant and dangerous condition. Immediately prick the affected area to bleed and vent the pathogenic qi. Apply "Jin Bu Huan" powder via insufflation. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with: Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructum), Gegen (Puerariae Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) (each 1 qian), and Sheng Shigao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum) (4 qian). Recovery occurs after one or two doses.
Xu Ya Throat (Deficiency Hoarseness Throat)
In Xu Ya Throat, there is no swelling in the throat, only a few red spots inside the lateral aspects of the pharynx, hoarseness with unclear voice, and trismus (lockjaw). This is a condition of internal fire combined with external wind. It arises from a preference for eating astringent foods, which fails to clear the Lung qi. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with: Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (3 fen) and Ziye (Perillae Folium) (2 qian). After one dose, if the voice clears, change the prescription to include: Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) (2 qian), Danpi (Moutan Cortex) (2 qian), Shuiyan Chao Shanzhi (Salt-water fried Gardeniae Fructus) (1 qian), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) (1 qian), and Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix) (1 qian). Recovery occurs after two additional doses.
Sheng Ya Throat (Hoarseness Throat)
This condition involves cold pathogens latent in the Lung system. There is no swelling or redness, nor are there ulcerative spots; only dryness and pain are felt. The patient can only consume rice porridge and cannot eat solid food. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with: Ziye (Perillae Folium) (2 qian), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) (2 qian), and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (5 fen). After two doses, reduce the dosage of Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) and Ziye (Perillae Folium) by 1 qian each. Two days later, change the prescription to include: Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix) (1 qian), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (1 qian), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (1 qian), Jiangzhi Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Prepared with Ginger Juice) (1 qian), Zaohe (Ziziphus Jujuba Seed) (20 grains), Hezi (Chebulae Fructus) (2.5 qian, fried with child's urine, half raw), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (5.5 qian, fried with child's urine, half raw), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (5.5 qian, fried with child's urine, half raw). Recovery requires four to five doses. Cooling medicines should not be used at the onset (this condition resolves in April).
Lansha Throat (Rotting Sand Throat)
This condition develops after exposure to cold, where exterior pathogens remain unresolved. Swelling and ulceration occur inside the pharyngeal isthmus. The rapid pulse at the right Guan position indicates toxicity in the Lung and Spleen. Use half the standard dose of Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with: Jiuchao Huangqin (Wine-fried Scutellariae Radix) (2 qian), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix) (1 qian), Shuiyan Chao Xuanshen (Salt-water fried Scrophulariae Radix) (2 qian), Gegen (Puerariae Radix) (1 qian), Sheng Shigao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum) (2.5 qian), Danzhuye (Lophatheri Herba) (2 qian), and Heche (Placenta Humana) (2.5 qian). Take continuously for three to four doses. If the ulcerated patches do not recede, add: Sheng Dahuang (Raw Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (3 qian), along with Jinba Baxian San (Jinba Eight Immortals Powder) and Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill), taken at 5 fen per dose. Three doses will achieve the desired result.
