Xu Disheng's daughter-in-law, the granddaughter of Ruan Yuntai's (Grand Tutor) daughter, suffered from syncope in the capital due to excessive grief over the loss of her son. Repeated administration of tonifying agents led to menstrual irregularities.
Some suspected pregnancy. Mengying stated: "Although the pulse is wiry, rapid, and slippery, this is syncope caused by phlegm harboring wind-yang." He prescribed a large dose of formula for eliminating phlegm and extinguishing wind, soothing depression, and clearing the Ying level, leading to gradual recovery.
On the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival in the Dingyou year, Zhang Jianlu, a broker aged over sixty, suddenly collapsed. Mengying was urgently summoned to examine the pulse, which was wiry, slippery, and large. He said: "This is an upward rebellion of phlegm, qi, and food stagnation combined."
First, a smoked plum (Wumei) was used to wipe open the jaw; a bamboo chopstick was placed horizontally in the mouth, and light salted ginger soup was poured in, followed by stimulation with a goose feather to induce vomiting. After a deep sigh, the patient regained consciousness. Subsequently, treatment to regulate qi and harmonize the middle jiao resulted in recovery. Years later, he died of another illness.
In early autumn, my mother suddenly collapsed. Mengying diagnosed a floating, wiry, and slippery pulse. He used: Cornu Saigantae Tatarici (Lingyangjiao), Rhizoma Arisaematis Cum Bile (Danningxing), Concha Ostreae (Muli), Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii (Shichangpu), Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae (Danshen), Poria (Fuling), Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis (Gouteng), Folium Mori (Sangye), Fructus Ficus Microcarpae (Beimu - *Note: Context implies Fritillaria, usually Chuanbeimu or Zhebeimu, but text says Beimu*), Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Juhong), and Spina Gleditsiae (Jili) to smooth qi, eliminate phlegm, extinguish wind, and descend fire, resulting in recovery.
A few days before spring in the Guimao year, [my mother] suddenly yawned and stretched, then fell into syncope. Mengying palpated the pulse, which was weak and wiry.
He said: "Although the disease resembles the previous case, the syndrome is different." He prescribed: Korean Ginseng (Gaolishen), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu), Polygoni Multiflori Preparatum (Heshouwu), Fructus Corni (Shanzhuyu), Fructus Lycii (Gouqi), Fructus Morus Albae (Sangshen), Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu), Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae (Niuxi), Spina Gleditsiae (Jili), Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Juhong), and Concha Ostreae (Muli) to settle and tonify, and to grasp and retain, leading to cure. I consider that for such cases, life and death hang in the balance of a breath. Observing these several cases of sudden collapse, one can see the divine nature of his differentiation, surpassing even many ancients, let alone ordinary physicians. My mother suffered two episodes of stroke-like conditions while I was far away; without Mengying, how could she have survived? My gratitude is engraved in my heart. I record these few words, hoping that readers will understand his heart for saving the world, and if they can practice clinically in this manner, all the sick under heaven will be raised up.
Zhu Sou, nearly seventy years old, suddenly collapsed at a banquet in the spring of the Jihei year, with profuse phlegm, stiff limbs, deviated eyes, and a stiff tongue unable to speak. Surgeon Wang Ruizhi recommended Mengying to treat him. He administered Liu Junzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) added with tails of whole scorpion (Xieshao), Cornu Saigantae Tatarici (Lingyangjiao), Rhizoma Arisaematis Cum Bile (Danningxing), Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii (Shichangpu), Bamboo Sap (Zhuli), and Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi), resulting in recovery.
The mother-in-law of Shen Xinyu's son suddenly suffered from coma and syncope. Mengying was summoned urgently. The patient lived on an upper floor, where it was hot like a steamer. Mengying said: "This is a constitution with yin deficiency and inherent hyperactivity of liver-yang. Summer-heat pathogen has entered the pericardium. It is urgent to move the bed to a cool place." He immediately prescribed Zi Xue Dan (Purple Snow Pill) one qian, mixed with newly drawn water for administration. However, the patient claimed her hands and feet were bound by ropes and firmly refused to move. Her family was terrified, thinking it was a spirit possession, and stood helpless upon hearing this. Mengying ordered them to move her anyway. After administering the medicine as directed, she indeed calmed down immediately.
Hu Ciyao's wife suddenly suffered from limb numbness and dizziness, misdiagnosed as "acute sha" (heatstroke/cramp). Mengying examined her: face slightly red, voice low, spirit exhausted. Eyes slightly red, tongue color slightly yellow, feet slightly cold, body slightly warm, chest slightly stuffy, pulse slightly wiry. He said: "This is due to inherent weakness of constitution, entangled thoughts, flaming up of heart-fire, and internal wind rising accordingly. How can it be mistaken for sha closure and wrongly treated with aromatic dispersants?" He prescribed a formula of: Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Os Draconis (Longgu), Concha Ostreae (Muli), Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii (Shichangpu), Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian), Semen Quartzum (Shiying), Radix Ophiopogonis (Maidong), Frumen Tritici (Xiaomai), Folium Nelumbinis (Zhuye), and Cor Nuciferae (Lianzixin). After two doses, she recovered. Subsequently, mild tonifying agents were given for convalescence.
