Cai Chuquan from Deqing suddenly developed aversion to cold and fever, severe throat pain with extreme thirst, epigastric fullness, and a crimson tongue. Mengying palpated the pulse, which was very rapid (Shu). He directly prescribed a large dose of: Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao), Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao), Scrophularia Root (Yuanshen), Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Mulberry Leaf (Sangye), Gardenia Fruit (Zizhi), Honeysuckle Flower (Yinhua), Trichosanthes Root (Huafen), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao), and Arctium Fruit (Niubang). After taking the medicine, red rashes appeared all over the body, and the fever subsided, followed by a sense of hunger.
The wife of Duan Chunmu suffered from rotting throat scarlet fever (Lanhou Sha). Internal and external medicine physicians were at their wits' end. Yao Xuejiao Xiaolian recommended Mengying for consultation. The patient was emaciated like firewood, skin hot as if branded, with tough phlegm obstructing the throat, unable to be expectorated, requiring a silk ribbon to stir and pull it out. The affected area was red and swollen with white putrid tissue, gums were eroded, unable to consume even rice water, and menstruation arrived out of cycle. Palpating the pulse, the left side was fine and rapid (Xi Shu), the right side was wiry and slippery (Xuan Hua). Mengying said: This is a constitution of Yin deficiency with latent fire disease, failing to clear and descend, disturbing the Ying (Nutritive) level. First, use Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhino-Corn Deer-Hoof Decoction) to clear the Ying level and regulate reckless bleeding; subsequently, administer Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) added with American Ginseng (Xiyangshen) to肃ate the Qi pathway and purge the raging fire; externally apply Xilei San (Xilei Powder) to sweep away phlegm and putridity and eliminate malignant toxins; then administer sweet and moistening medicines to dispel residual heat and replenish fluids. The condition improved day by day, and recovery occurred after more than a month.
In the household of Wu Yufeng Mingfu, pediatricians were hired to vaccinate the two grandsons born to his second son against smallpox. Two or three days after inoculation, fever and throat pain occurred. Physicians believed this indicated the impending emergence of smallpox pustules and administered ascending and diffusing medicines. This resulted in bright red spots resembling brocade all over the body and throats rotting as if burning. Within half a month, the entire family was infected, and other physicians dared not enter his room. When Mengying went to diagnose, he saw that his third son Gengyou and fourth son Xiaofeng had not yet fallen ill. He urgently stated: Those already ill must certainly be treated, but those not yet ill are especially in need of prevention. He passed on Qinglong Baihu Tang (Green Dragon White Tiger Decoction) to be drunk freely as tea, and they remained unharmed. His wife Hong Yi-ren and his second daughter-in-law were both cured. Additionally, his eldest daughter-in-law, his daughter, his three grandsons, his servant, and female relatives visiting the sick, seven people died from this disease. At that time, Wu Yufeng and Zuyan, father and son, were both serving officials elsewhere, and the second son was also working in a yamen in Jiangxi. Unexpectedly, this disaster was brewed by vaccination, further confirming that Mengying's advice against vaccination is worthy of emulation.
Pan Hongchou entrusted a pediatrician to vaccinate the grandson born to his second son against smallpox. Three days after inoculation, throat pain, fever, and spot-rot appeared, leading to death within seven days. Chunbo and his younger brother Xiangyan both contracted the disease. Chunbo’s condition was cured by Gu Tingquan. Xiangyan’s illness involved throat rot extending to the tongue, chest and diaphragm blockage, locked jaw, painful urination, and mouth flowing with purple-black blood clots. People believed his internal organs were rotting. Mengying examined him and said: Evil blood and toxic saliva are seeking to exit. Apply Xilei San, hold a bowl under the mouth, and a large amount of saliva and blood flowed out. The throat, gum ring, and chest/diaphragm gradually relaxed. Prescribe Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhino-Corn Deer-Hoof Decoction) added with Scrophularia Root (Yuanshen), Honeysuckle Flower (Yinhua), Child’s Urine (Tongni), Lotus Root Juice (Ouzhi), Bamboo Sap (Zhuli), Trichosanthes Root (Huafen), Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu), and Acorus Root (Shichangpu). Gradually stabilized. Subsequently used生津 (generating fluids) and tonifying medicines for complete recovery.
Chen Shubo’s two younger sisters also suffered from throat rash (Houzhen). Menstruation happened to occur, accompanied by soreness and pain in the four limbs, slight difficulty in movement, and Qi obstruction in the throat. Mengying palpated the pulse, which was wiry and slippery (Xuan Hua). Use Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao), Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao), Inula Flower (Xuanfuhua), Hematite (Zheshi), Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru), Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu), Aristolochia Fruit (Doulou), Arctium Fruit (Niubang), Belamcanda Rhizome (Shegan), Polygonum Multiflorum Root (Dougen), Trichosanthes Root (Huafen), Honeysuckle Flower (Yinhua), Sea Bamboo Sap (Haizhuli), and Luffa Rind (Sigualuo) as the formula, varying ingredients. Combined with external application of Xilei San, resulting in cure.
Chen Shubo’s concubine simultaneously suffered from throat erosion (Houmi), with pain偏 (biased) to the left side of the head, palpitations with nausea, high fever and irritability, and a wiry, fine, and rapid (Xuan Xi Shu) pulse. Mengying said: This involves Yin deficiency with wind stirring. Initially prescribe Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao), Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao), Scrophularia Root (Yuanshen), Chrysanthemum Flower (Juhua), Salvia Root (Danshen), Gardenia Fruit (Zizhi), Mulberry Leaf (Sangye), and Pueraria Leaf (Mabo). Externally blow Xilei San into the throat. Throat healed, fever subsided. Subsequently use Erzhi Wan (Two Winter Pill), "Er Dong" (Tian Dong and Mai Dong - Asparagus Root and Ophiopogon Root), Rehmannia Root (Shengdi), Quartz (Shiying), Cistanche Stem (Rongrong), Tortoise Shell (Guiban), and Poria (Fuling) to nourish Yin and subdue Yang, resulting in cure.
Chen Shubo’s cousin Baohe, aged under twenty, suffered from aphonia and throat pain. Mengying prescribed Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao), Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao), Gypsum (Shigao), Scrophularia Root (Yuanshen), Polygonum Multiflorum Root (Dougen), Arctium Fruit (Niubang), and Belamcanda Rhizome (Shegan) in large doses of clearing and肃ating medicines. Voice opened, but throat became eroded. Blow Xilei San; erosion healed, but rashes covered the whole body, with swelling in the left eye and behind the ear. Add two taels of fresh Chrysanthemum Leaves to the formula; rashes healed. (However) cough with phlegm persisted. Continue the previous method; took more than thirty prescriptions for recovery. This case had a slippery and rapid (Hua Shu) pulse, extreme thirst, and never received erroneous medication from start to finish, thus achieving cure.
