I have long suffered from belching (eructation, the sound of gas escaping from the stomach through the mouth). Whenever my body feels slightly unwell, the condition arises; it is loud and frequent, with a momentum that cannot be restrained. In the winter of the Wuzi year, it flared up most severely, causing unbearable suffering. Wang Mengying said: This is due to the decline of Yang Qi (vital energy) and the counterflow of turbid Yin pathogens. First, take one dose of Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction), followed immediately by Xuanfu Daizhe Tang (Inula and Hematite Decoction), and then the illness was cured. Since then, every time it recurred, taking medicine according to this method proved effective. Subsequent attacks gradually became milder, and now it rarely occurs. I often heard Wang Mengying say: This is an excellent prescription by Zhang Zhongjing. The herbs are extremely mild in nature, yet people fear to use them, which shows their limited insight.
A patient surnamed Yuan suffered from belching, so loud that neighbors could hear it. Dr. Yu prescribed both Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) and Xuanfu Daizhe Tang (Inula and Hematite Decoction), but they were ineffective. Wang Mengying examined the pulse and found the Chi position (kidney pulse at the wrist) deficient and large. He asked him: Do you feel gas rushing upward from your lower abdomen? The patient replied: Indeed. Wang Mengying said: This disease is located in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner). Prescription: Juglans Semen (Walnut Kernel), Psoraleae Fructus (Buguzhi), Allii Tuberosi Semen (Jiu Zi), Cuscutae Semen (Tusi), Foeniculi Fructus (Xiao Hui), Cornu Cervi Corium Pergamentum (Lujiaoshuang), Lycii Fructus (Gouqi), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Poria (Fuling), Rubi Fructus (Fupenzi), Os Draconis (Longchi), Ostrea Concha (Muli). After one dose, the rushing Qi stopped at the throat, no longer making the belching sound. After two more doses, silence prevailed. With continued administration, he was completely cured.
The wife of Xu Taichang Diansheng suffered from waist and leg pain and had always been prone to belching. Sometimes rubbing her fingertips or wiping her forehead would trigger incessant belching. She had long considered it a deficiency syndrome. When in the capital, she took tonic medicines without success. Returning home in winter, Wang Mengying palpated the pulse: wiry and slippery. He diagnosed phlegm obstructing the collaterals, preventing the free flow of Qi. Prescription: Luffae Fructus Retinervus (Sigualuo), Bambusae Folium (Zhuru), Inulae Flos (Xuanfu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Jueluo), Antelopis Cornu (Lingyangjiao), Poria (Fuling), Sojae Semen Praeparatum (Doujuan), Swinglea Fructus (Jinlingzi), Diospyroi Fructus (Shidi), Metasequoiae Cortex (Haifushi), Alismatis Rhizoma (Biqi), Nelumbinis Rhizoma (Ourou). The patient swallowed Danggui Longhui Wan (Angelica Sinensis and Gardenia Pill) and stabilized.
Zhu Puxiang, aged fifty-six, suffered from childhood consumption (pediatric wasting-thirst or deficiency labor) and subsequently hemoptysis (coughing up blood). After his thirties, he abstained from sexual activity, which allowed him to survive until this age. However, his stools were normally hard and pellet-like like sheep dung, indicating such severe depletion of Blood aspect. This autumn, he suddenly developed hiccups (hiccup). He had continuously taken medications for nourishing Yin, suppressing rebellious Qi, warming, and grasping Qi, but his condition became critical. Wang Mengying examined him: the pulse was wiry, slippery, forceful, and rapid; the tongue coating was thick, yellow, and greasy; he had a bitter taste in the mouth and dark red urine. The treatment principle was to use a large dose of cooling and moistening agents, such as Xue Geng Soup (Sea Jellyfish and Water Chestnut Decoction), Trichosanthis Semen (Louren), Phragmitis Caulis Juice (Zhuli), Eriobotryae Folium (Pipaye), Typhonii Rhizoma (Weijing), Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen), Asteris Radix (Zouwan), Belamcandae Rhizoma (Shegan), Adenophorae Radix (Doulou), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Changpu), etc. After several doses, he recovered only after passing red stools. For someone of such advanced age and weak constitution, hiccups caused by phlegm-heat are rare; thus, hiccups due to deficiency-cold are even less common.
