Dan Xiaoyuan, serving as a patrol inspector, suffered from pain in the right hypochondrium. The physician administered warming and moving herbs (herbs that warm the interior, assist yang, move qi, and dispel cold), but the condition worsened to the point of aphonia (loss of voice) where he could not speak, inability to turn over while supine, and severe qi rebellion like running when sitting up. Urination and defecation were obstructed, and neither decoctions nor drinks could be taken for three days. Wang Mengying examined his pulse: deep and wiry. He prescribed: *Inulae Flos* (Xuanfu), *Hematitum* (Zhesi), *Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus* (Xiebai), *Trichosanthis Semen* (Gualouren), *Coptidis Rhizoma* (Huanglian), *Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Ginger et Alumine* (Banxia), *Bambusae Folium* (Zhuru), *Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus* (Beimu), *Aurantii Fructus Immaturus* (Zhishi), *Astrotidis Radix et Rhizoma* (Ziwan), added with Xue Geng Soup (a dietary therapy made of *Metereiae Carapax* and *Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma*). After one dose, improvement was seen; after several doses, he recovered.
Chen Chunhu's son, Zizhuang, had always been constitutionally weak. In late autumn, he suffered from abdominal pain, spontaneous sweating, cold limbs, and faint respiration. Everyone believed it was yuan qi deficiency about to collapse. Wang Mengying examined his pulse: although deep and hidden, difficult to find, the tongue coating was yellow and greasy, mouth was dry, and urine was red. Treatment should follow the symptoms. He prescribed: *Coptidis Rhizoma* (Huanglian), *Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex* (Houpo), *Meliae Fructus* (Lianzi), *Gardeniae Fructus* (Zhizi), *Cyperi Rhizoma* (Yanhusu), *Bombyx Batryticatus* (Can Sha), *Artemisiae Scopariae Herba* (Shengtoucao). After taking them, he recovered. The following year, he contracted an external pathogen and died due to erroneous use of tonifying drugs.
Xia Yunquan invited Wang Mengying to treat an old woman surnamed Qian. She suffered from severe abdominal pain, nearly unbearable. Observing a wiry and slippery pulse, Wang prescribed *Angelicae Sinensis Radix* and *Jatamansi Rhizoma* Pill (Danggui Longhui Wan), and her condition stabilized.
Xu Zhongyun suffered from abdominal pain and lack of appetite. The physician administered *Ginseng Radix* (Renshen), *Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata* (Fuzi), *Zingiberis Rhizoma* (Shengjiang), *Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma* (Baizhu), etc. Pain and distension increased daily, he could not even take sips of water, and appeared lethargic as if sleeping. Wang Mengying examined the pulse: wiry and fine, tongue coating yellow and greasy. He administered: *Aurantii Fructus Immaturus* (Zhishi), *Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex* (Houpo), *Evodiae Fructus* (Wuzhuyu), *Coptidis Rhizoma* (Huanglian), *Gardeniae Fructus* (Zhizi), *Meliae Fructus* (Lianzi), *Cyperi Rhizoma* (Xiangfu), *Tribuli Fructus* (Jili), *Cyperi Rhizoma* (Yanhu). After two doses, bowel movement resumed, pulse returned, tongue coating receded, appetite returned, and he recovered.
Ruan Fanshu's wife suffered from abdominal pain and impending syncope. Seeing her very weak constitution, the physician used methods to suppress rebellion and tonify through unblocking, but the condition worsened. Wang Mengying observed the pulse: wiry and rapid, overflowing on the left side. This was due to anger causing liver yang to surge violently. Symptoms included constipation, lack of appetite, bitter taste in the mouth, and thirst. He prescribed: Xue Geng Soup, *Gardeniae Fructus* (Zhizi), *Meliae Fructus* (Lianzi), *Inulae Flos* (Xuanfu), *Jiang Xie* (likely referring to a specific mineral or blood-cooling herb, kept as Jiang Xie), *Cyperi Rhizoma* (Yanhu), *Moutan Cortex* (Danpi), *Bambusae Folium* (Zhuru), *Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus* (Beimu), mixed with *Zuojin Pill*. She recovered. A year later, she died of another illness at her post.
Zhang Yuebo's younger brother suddenly suffered from abdominal pain, shortly after a heavy meal of mutton noodles. Physicians all attributed it to food stagnation. Continuous administration of digestion-promoting herbs intensified the pain and thirst; drinking caused violent vomiting, and urination/defecation ceased. Suspecting cold binding, layers of drying and heating herbs were given. The disease worsened, moaning almost ceased, lasting four days. Wang Mengying observed: pulse wiry and rapid, tongue coating dry and yellow, abdomen soft upon pressure. He used 1 jin of *Metereiae Carapax* (Haizhe) and 1 jin of *Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma* (Biqi), decocted and frequently administered. Vomiting stopped. The remaining decoction was boiled with: *Gardeniae Fructus* (Zhizi), *Coptidis Rhizoma* (Huanglian), *Meliae Fructus* (Lianzi), *Dendrobii Caulis* (Shihu), *Bambusae Folium* (Zhuru), *Scutellariae Radix* (Huangqin), *Loquat Leaf* (Pipaye), *Anemarrhenae Rhizoma* (Zhimu), *Cyperi Rhizoma* (Yanhu), *Persimmon Calyx* (Shidi), *Inulae Flos* (Xuanfu) as a decoction, swallowed with *Longhui Wan*. Shortly after administration, urination occurred, pain decreased. The next day, after defecation, he recovered.
Wu Songqing's wife, near fifty, had already ceased menstruation. She accidentally suffered from abdominal distension. Local physician Huang, knowing her constitution was frail, administered *Shengji Tang* (Kidney Qi Decoction), leading to alternating chills and fever. Switching to *Jianzhong* method, ten days later, the condition worsened with metrorrhagia (bing). Tonification made it worse. They sought help from Wang Mengying. Pulse: surging and rapid, thirsty for drinks, yellow tongue coating. This was absorption of summer-heat pathogen, and warm tonification caused blood leakage. Prescribed: *Rhinoceoris Cornu* (Xijiao), *Scrophulariae Radix* (Yuanshen), *Imperatae Rhizoma* (Maogen), *Platycladi Cacumen* (Boye), *Gardeniae Fructus* (Zhizi), *Meliae Fructus* (Lianzi), *Anemarrhenae Rhizoma* (Zhimu), *Dendrobii Caulis* (Shihu), *Trichosanthis Radix* (Huafen), *Clerodendri Cortex* (Baiwei). After several doses, stability was achieved. Subsequently added: *Rehmanniae Radix* (Shengdi), *Erzhi Wan* (Two Solstices Pill), "Er Dong" (Tiandong and Maidong) for nourishment. She recovered. The following year, she died due to medication error.
Gao Ruozhou accidentally suffered from abdominal distension. The physician administered warming and moving herbs, gradually forming a tangible mass resembling pi syndrome. He often felt qi rushing upward and acid regurgitation, firmly believing it was deficiency-cold. He tried various warm tonics, diet decreased daily, the mass increased, muscles wasted, bedridden for half a year. In spring of Jiachen year, Wang Mengying examined the pulse: deep, wiry, soft, and slippery. Bowel movement unsmooth, urine turbid and short, tongue coating yellow and greasy. It was liver qi depression and knotting. Depression generates heat; tonification condenses phlegm. Prescribed: *Gardeniae Fructus* (Zhizi), *Meliae Fructus* (Chuanlian), *Evodiae Fructus* (Wuzhuyu), *Coptidis Rhizoma* (Huanglian), *Cyperi Rhizoma* (Yanhu), *Linderae Radix* (Wuyao), *Inulae Flos* (Xuanfu), *Aurantii Fructus Immaturus* (Zhishi), *Medicinal Chicken Gizzard Membrane* (Jijin), *Chini Carapax et Plastrum* (Biejia), *Bambusae Folium* (Zhuru), *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium* (Chenpi), *Poria* (Fuling), *Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Ginger et Alumine* (Banxia). After taking, symptoms declined sequentially, but intermittent chills/fever and limb soreness occurred. Some suspected malaria. Wang said: "This is the dissemination of qi mechanism and release of depressed heat, the exit of the disease, how can it be blocked?" Added: *Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix* (Qinjiao), *Bupleuri Radix* (Chaihu), *Sojae Seminum Preparatum* (Doujuan), *Saiga Tataricae Cornu* (Lingyangjiao), *Bombyx Batryticatus* (Can Sha), *Mori Ramulus* (Sangzhi) to guide it. People doubted that long-term deficiency patients could tolerate such cooling and dispersing herbs. But Ruozhou believed firmly. Wang's insight was unwavering. Chills/fever subsided, rushing stopped. Abdomen still hard. Occasionally used *Longhui Guntan Wan* to gently purge. Diet increased, gradually recovering. Ruozhou excelled in clerical script, collected lines from *Shipin* to gift Wang: "Ancient mirror reflects spirit, there is a true master. Clear ripples reach the bottom, as if seeing the mind of the Dao." Praising his clairvoyant-like perception.
Shi Zizhang suffered from abdominal distension. Zhu gave large doses of warm tonics, seemingly comfortable. Wang saw this and disagreed. Zhu said: "Taking it does not aid distension, just need more to recover, why doubt?" Wang said: "Emaciated, rapid pulse, dry red tongue, this is yin deficiency with heat distension. Years ago, Fan Cihou's wife and Yang Gaizhi's mother-in-law had similar conditions. Many doctors attacked and tonified, no small effect. I used extremely bitter heat-draining and slightly pungent meridian-unblocking methods, and they recovered instantly. Your disease started recently, distension does not hinder eating, clearly not in the qi level. You mistakenly believe warm tonics don't aid distension, so you took them without doubt. Unknowingly, yin is consumed more, meridians more blocked. Distension may not increase, but muscles waste, pulse becomes faster, dry cough and shortness of breath arise. How is this different from women's 'Feng Xiao' and 'Xi Ben'?" Soon, he did not survive. Yu Jiayan initially believed "men also have blood gu syndrome," showing that although men and women differ, there is similarity in difference and difference in similarity. Clinicians must not be rigid.
Mr. Xu, after drunkenness and overeating, suffered abdominal bloating and fullness, no bowel movement. Relying on his strength, he continued drinking alcohol and eating meat. Two days later, abdominal pain, still suspecting cold, drank fiery wine, and smoked "opium". Urination stopped, followed by extreme thirst and drinking, which caused immediate vomiting, yet daily activities remained normal. On the fourth day, he begged Wang Mengying to examine him. Pulse: hurried with intermittent pauses, tongue covered with yellow coating, extremely foul and greasy. Body plump, muscles trembling, condition critical. Wang gently told him: "It is merely food stagnation. Drink Hawthorn and Medicated Leaven soup." Only in the afternoon did he feel cold fingers and fatigue, yet could sit in a sedan chair out of the city. Upon returning home, qi rebelled, phlegm rose at midnight. By dawn, chest, abdomen, and forehead swelled and burst, causing death. Knowing purgation was too late, Wang did not prescribe medicine.
Mrs. Song, suffering from recurrent external contraction, was nearing recovery. Suddenly, abdominal distension extended to the epigastrium, panting, diarrhea, urinary retention, unable to swallow liquids, spontaneous sweating, unable to lean for rest. Family panicked, extremely poor, unable to hire a doctor, begged Wang Mengying to prescribe for rescue. Used: *Cinnamomi Ramulus* (Guizhi), *Gypsum Fibrosum* (Shigao), *Inulae Flos* (Xuanfu), *Hematitum* (Zhesi), *Pruni Armeniaci Semen* (Xingren), *Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex* (Houpo), *Scutellariae Radix* (Huangqin), *Pinelliae Rhizoma* (Banxia), *Coptidis Rhizoma* (Huanglian), *Akebiae Caulis* (Tongcao). As soon as the cup was emptied, the illness vanished. Zhang Yangzhi witnessed this, sighing it as divine treatment.
