Zhong Yaohui, aged over sixty, suffered from edema in the capital (Beijing), starting from the scrotum. He experienced rebellious Qi and loose stools; various treatments were ineffective. Urgently taking a carriage back to Hangzhou, he entrusted his relative Xie Jintang to invite Wang Mengying for treatment. Palpation revealed a faint and weak pulse; inquiry into urination showed clear and long urine. Wang asked, "The medicines you took in the capital, were they Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) or Ba Zheng San (Eight-Herb Corrective Powder)? Or perhaps Shen Qi Tang (Kidney Qi Decoction) or Wu Pi Yin (Five-Rind Decoction)?" Zhong replied, "Indeed as you say, I have tried them all, yet why does the disease worsen daily?" Wang said, "This is Spleen Earth deficiency failing to control Water. Promoting diuresis is futile, and nourishing Yin is also erroneous. One must tonify Earth to overcome dampness." A large dose of Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) was prescribed. The patient indeed stabilized. Eight years later, he passed away from another illness.
Huang Lüji, after having malaria treated (Jie Nüe), developed edema. Physician Zhao, hearing of his constitutionally deficient state, palpated a wiry and fine pulse and thus used warming and tonifying methods. This led to incessant hiccups, Qi rushing upward hindering sleep, inability to eat, and a critical condition. He asked Wang Mengying if it was still possible to return to Yuhang. Wang said, "Although the pulse is wiry and fine, it has force; you must have mistakenly taken warming tonics. If you are willing to take my medicine, there is no need to fear." He prescribed a formula combining Gualou Xiebai Banxia Tang (Trichosanthes Fruit, Macrostemon Rhizome, and Pinellia Decoction) with Ju Pi Zhu Ru Tang (Tangerine Peel and Bamboo Shavings Decoction), adding Didi (Kaki Calyx), Xuansu (Inula Flower), Su Zi (Perilla Fruit), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Zhe Shi (Hematitum), Ziwan (Adenophorae Radix), and Pipaye (Loquat Leaf). After four doses, he recovered.
Madam Shi Beiya, wife of Shi Beiya, had suffered from gingival pain for a long time, which gradually progressed to facial and bodily edema. Some considered it deficiency, others dampness; the condition worsened daily, accompanied by rebellious Qi and anorexia. Wang observed the pulse: left side洪数 (surging and rapid), right side弦滑 (wiry and slippery). Although the Yin aspect was deficient, priority should be given to clearing Phlegm-Heat from the Lung and Stomach. He administered Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) plus Shashen (Glehniae Radix), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Dongguapi (Winter Melon Rind), Pipaye (Loquat Leaf), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Zhuru (Bambusa Textilis Caulis in Succous State), and Lugen (Phragmitis Rhizoma). Upon ingestion, the edema subsided immediately. Subsequently, Yin-nourishing herbs were added, and the gingival pain ceased.
Ma Xianggu, a Grain Transport Captain, suffered from urinary retention bordering on death. His relative, Sima Zhao Chunshan, invited Wang Mengying. The pulse was firm, the body robust, with thirst and yellow tongue coating. He was given Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Lianshi (Meliae Semen), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu - *Note: Substitute with Buffalo Horn in modern practice*), Ziwan (Adenophorae Radix), Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus), and Zhuru (Bambusa Textilis Caulis in Succous State), followed by Danggui Longhui Wan (Angelica and Gardenia Pill). He recovered completely without recurrence.
Chen Jishang suffered from Lin syndrome (strangury) that failed to heal for a long time, extending into the humid summer heat. Wang diagnosed, "It is easy to handle," and prescribed Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction), resulting in recovery.
Madam Zhou Jusheng, wife of Zhou Jusheng, suffered from soreness and bearing-down sensation in the lower abdomen, frequent and painful urination. Physicians first used promoting diuresis without effect, then tried lifting and warming tonification. All methods failed, leading to anorexia, insomnia, constipation, thirst but inability to drink, and palpitations triggered by sound. Wang palpated and said, "This is a Jueyin (Liver/Pericardium) disease. One cannot merely treat the Foot-Taiyang (Bladder) channel. First, use salty and bitter agents to drain Heat; subsequently, use sweet and moistening agents to nourish Yin. Avoid all draining and leaching herbs entirely." She recovered.
Hu Zhenhua, at the age of sixty, suffered from bleeding mixed with urine after urination, causing severe pain. He claimed, "My urine stream is long and forceful, suggesting this is not a Fire syndrome." Wang observed a slippery and rapid pulse. He prescribed Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Lianshi (Meliae Semen), Huairei (Stemonitis Rhizoma - *Note: Context suggests Coptidis or similar, but text says Huairei*, likely referring to specific local herb or typo for Kuailian/Coptis, kept as literal translation based on text 'Huairui' often associated with Sophora or similar in older texts, here interpreted as part of the cooling hemostatic mix), Cebei (Platycladi Cacumen), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Yinhua (Lonicerae Flos), Gancao Shao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra et Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata), and Lüdou (Phaseoli Radiatus). He recovered in ten days. Four years later, he died of another illness.
Chen Zufu, after urination, saw blood, with abnormal urethral pain, reduced appetite, and shortness of breath. Wang prescribed Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Lianshi (Meliae Semen), Yinhua (Lonicerae Flos), Cebeiyè (Platycladi Cacumen), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Sangye (Mori Folium), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), and Lüdou (Phaseoli Radiatus), decocted in Lotus Root Soup. After two doses, the condition greatly improved. Then, Danpi and Cebeiyè were removed, and Xiyangshen (American Ginseng Radix) and Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) were added. He recovered.
The daughter-in-law of Zhu Xiangcha suffered from difficult and painful urination. Physicians used draining/diuretic herbs, which caused fever, headache, anorexia, thirst, and insomnia. Wang's pulse was fine and rapid. This indicated Yin deficiency with Liver Qi stagnation transforming into Heat and generating Wind, with fluids exhausted. How could further draining be tolerated? He prescribed Baiwei (Cynanchi Atrati Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Jinlingzi San (Meliosma Seed Powder), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Ziwan (Adenophorae Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), and Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos). She recovered immediately.
Grandmother of Xu Peizhi, aged over seventy, suffered from chronic Lin leakage and recurrent wind syndromes. Wang's pulse was wiry and slippery; tongue was crimson and dry. He frequently used Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Erzhi Wan (Two Solstices Pill), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), Baiwei (Cynanchi Atrati Radix), Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Guiban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), and Haipiaoxiao (Sepiae Endoconcha) to quell acute symptoms; and modified Ganlu Yin (Sweet Dew Decoction) for maintenance. People suspected the medicine was too cold. Wang said, "Tailor the clothes to the body." The disease belonged to Yang excess with abundant Qi and Blood; based on pulse and tongue, treatment should be so. The patient stated, "Ten years ago, I accidentally suffered from metrorrhagia and widely took warming tonics, thus creating this ailment." It was realized that although congenital Yang Qi was sufficient, drugs had brewed this disease.
At the end of autumn, she suffered from chills and fever resembling malaria, irritability, insomnia, extreme thirst, and hunger, yet unable to eat. Wang's pulse was twice as wiry and rapid as normal. He employed methods to clear the Lung, eliminate phlegm, soften the Liver, and replenish fluids. She gradually stabilized.
This winter, someone recommended Dr. Wuinian. Inquiry revealed the source of the disease, diagnosed as "Tuoying" (Depletion of Ying) in the elderly, and prescribed according to the principle of "Tonifying Qi for Blood Loss." After three or four doses, appetite increased sharply, and the family rejoiced. Soon after, heavy bleeding occurred, and sleep and appetite were lost. Wang was re-invited and maintained his previous opinion. Gradually, she recovered.
