Shenqu (a piece the size of a fist, heated red-hot in fire and quenched in wine; drink two large bowls to be cured immediately)
Grind Sophorae Flos (Zaojiao, 皂角) into coarse powder. Heat river stones until red-hot, place them on a small tile inside a measuring vessel, sprinkle the Sophorae Flos powder on top, and fumigate with the smoke. For severe skin itching, fumigating several times more will lead to self-healing.
Use four to five taels of genuine Qiai (Artemisia argyi, 蕲艾), add four to five cups of water, boil for five or six rolling boils, and pour into a large-mouthed bottle. Seal with two layers of hemp cloth, and fumigate the palms of the hands over the bottle mouth. Reheat if it cools down; this is highly effective.
Platycladi Cacumen (Cebaiye, 侧柏叶), Ash from decayed boats (Baichuanhui, 败船灰)
First, grind the ash from decayed boats into powder, mix with Tung oil (Tongyou, 桐油), and apply externally. Then, burn Platycladi Cacumen to produce smoke and fumigate the area; one or two applications will result in complete recovery.
Branches of Sophora japonica (Huai zhi, 槐枝), Pine branches (Song zhi, 松枝), Peach branches (Tao zhi, 桃枝), and roots of Genkwa flos (Yuanhuagen, 芫花根). Pound together and decoct in water. Place in a deep basin, fumigate the knees, cover with a blanket, rub the area after sweating. Then, equal parts of Aconitum carmichaelii radix preparata (Caowu, 草乌), Asari Radix (Xixin, 细辛), and Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风) are ground into powder, sewn into boots or socks to protect the knees; long-term use leads to self-healing. For foot swelling during long journeys, sprinkle into shoe soles or wet straw sandals. Consume porridge made with Chrysanthemi Flos (Ganjuhua, 甘菊花) and aged Coicis Semen (Yiyiren, 薏苡仁); eat cooked carp boiled with Adzuki beans (Chixiaodou, 赤小豆).
Steam facial skin with vinegar and apply hot compresses, alternating until sweating occurs, which is ideal.
"Masifang": Take good quality linen hemp, comb away rough bark residue with a wooden comb, retaining only the silk-like fibers. Suspend four taels, scorch from bottom to top with fire until charred but preserving medicinal properties, then grind into extremely fine powder. Decoct in two large bowls of good wine, drink according to the person's tolerance. Keep the body warm, and tread on heated bricks with the feet to guide the medicinal power downward. The treatment is considered effective when sweat appears on the legs and sticky sweat on the soles of the feet.
Guangjiao (Donkey-hide gelatin, 广胶) (three taels), Scallion (Cong, 葱), Ginger (Jiang, 姜) (half a jin each, pounded to extract juice and reserved)
Separately, take good aged wine lees. Extract two cups of lees oil, or use one bowl of rice vinegar, mix with aged lees, place in a fine silk bag, filter to obtain two cups of juice. Simmer together with gelatin, scallion juice, and ginger juice until it forms a paste. Apply externally using cloth spread; this stops pain, reduces swelling, and cures the condition.
The symptoms of Hongxiangjiao (Ergotism/Gout-like condition, 香港脚) involve feeling heat in the body due to dampness invasion and sudden swelling of the feet. Ginseng must not be used; doing so can be fatal. This must be strictly avoided.
Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 柴胡), Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji, 防己) (one qian each), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药) (three qian), Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) (five qian), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (five qian each), Coicis Semen (Yiren, 薏仁) (one liang)
Decoct in water and take orally; recovery occurs after one to two doses. If Ginseng (Renshen, 人参) is used, it draws pathogenic factors into the Qi level. Since Hongxiangjiao affects the blood vessels/channels, it should be dispersed from below, not drawn upward. Drawing it upward inevitably harms the Heart, leading to death.
