Fei Yong (Lung Abscess) initially arises from contracting wind-cold without timely gentle dispersal, allowing pathogens to linger in the lungs. It may also result from emotional disturbances, irregular diet, or overwork damaging the Spleen and Lung. Another cause is internal injury from labor, coughing in the wind, and invasion of external cold. Early symptoms include piloerection, aversion to wind, heavy coughing, dull pain in the chest and diaphragm, and stiffness in the neck preventing turning. These are true signs. As it progresses, clear nasal discharge occurs, followed by expectoration of purulent sputum that is yellow and foul-smelling. Severe cases present with chest and hypochondriac distension, difficulty breathing, reduced appetite, surging pulse with spontaneous sweating, evolving into chronic cough and consumption, hemoptysis, alternating chills and fever, emaciation, expectoration of bloody pus, hoarseness, and sore throat. The condition transforms into Fei Wei (Flaccidity of the Lung). Such diseases are nearly fatal, with only one chance in a hundred survival.
