Discourse states: The condition of blurred vision, redness, and pain in the eyes caused by the eruption of mineral drugs (Shiyao, referring to ancient consumption of mineral-based medicines such as Five-Stone Powder) occurs because the pathogenic nature of the minerals ascends due to deficiency, accompanied by phlegm-heat accumulation within the diaphragm. The nature of mineral drugs tends to enter the Kidney. If daily life management is improper or dietary intake is unregulated, the qi of the minerals surges upward, combining with phlegm-heat to steam and harass the Liver, resulting in blurred vision, redness, and pain in the eyes.
Formula for treating blurred vision, redness, and pain in the eyes, and inability to see clearly caused by the eruption of mineral drugs: Dahuang Tang (Rhubarb Decoction).
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, chopped and stir-fried), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, removed roots), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed, each 2 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, removed black heart), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried and chopped), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, removed seedlings and leaves), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed with hot water to remove slipperiness, each 1 liang), Shanzhizi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus, 7 seeds).
The above eight herbs are coarsely pounded and sieved. Each dose consists of 5 qianbi (approx. 5-10g depending on era/measure) of the mixture, added with 3 zhan of water and 1 fen (approx. 1 qian) of Paojiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Praeparatum, smashed). Decoct until 1.5 zhan remains, strain, and divide into three warm doses, taken morning and evening.
Formula for treating redness of the eyes, inability to open them, irritability with heat sensation, and palpitations in the chest caused by the eruption of mineral drugs, aimed at purging the Liver heat: Qianhu Tang (Peucedani Radix Decoction).
Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, removed rhizome head), Shanzhizi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed), Cheqianye (Plantaginis Herba), Danzhuyez (Phyllostachys Viridis Folium, each 2 liang), Daqing (Arctii Fructus or Isatidis Folium context dependent, here likely Isatidis Folium based on formula name variants, but text says Daqing - Indigo Naturalis/Folium Isatidis), Qinpi (Fraxini Cortex, chopped), Juemingzi (Cassiae Semen, crushed), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, removed seedlings and leaves), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, removed black heart, each 3 liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum).
The above eleven herbs are coarsely pounded and sieved. Each dose consists of 5 qianbi of the mixture, added with 3 zhan of water. Boil for five or six boils, then add Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 qianbi). Decoct until 1.5 zhan remains, strain, and divide into three warm doses. Recovery occurs when bowel movements become free.
Formula for treating redness and pain in the eyes, dark urine, difficult defecation, rebellious qi rushing to the chest, and dry mouth caused by the eruption of mineral drugs: Huangqin Tang (Scutellariae Radix Decoction).
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, removed black heart), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, chopped and stir-fried, each 2 liang), Shanzhizi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus, 14 seeds).
The above three herbs are coarsely pounded and sieved. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi of the mixture, added with 1 zhan of water. Decoct until 70% remains, then add Chidou (Sojae Semen Preparatum, 1 he). Boil for three or five more boils, strain, and take warm. The therapeutic goal is mild diarrhea two to three times; stop this effect with Jiangshui Zhou (fermented rice water porridge).
Formula for treating severe lower back pain resembling breaking, and a sensation that the eyes will protrude, caused by heat rising to the Liver and Diaphragm while the Waist and Kidneys are extremely cold: Huanglian Yin (Coptis Decoction).
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, removed roots), Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, each 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried and chopped, 0.5 liang).
The above three herbs are coarsely pounded and sieved. Add 3 zhan of water and decoct until 1 zhan remains. Strain, add Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 qianbi), and boil for two or three more boils. Divide into two warm doses. A mild laxative effect indicates recovery.
Method for treating stabbing eye pain caused by heat rushing to the Liver and ascending to the eyes: Urine Wash Method.
Collect urine from overnight cold food/digestion. Warm it in the early morning and use it to wash the eyes. Recovery occurs after three days.
Formula for treating red blood vessels and polyps in the eyes, gritty pain, and inability to open them: Za Rou Huanglian Dian Fang (Jujube Meat Coptis Eye Drop Formula).
Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 7 seeds, pitted), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, removed roots, crushed 1 liang, wrapped in silk), Danzhuyez (Phyllostachys Viridis Folium, one handful).
Add 2 zhan of water and decoct the bamboo leaves until 1.5 zhan remains. Remove the leaves and clarify the liquid. Add the jujube meat and wrapped Coptis. Decoct until 3 he remains. Filter through silk to remove dregs. Before sleep, instill into the eyes daily until recovery.
Formula for treating red and itchy eyes: Dingxiang Huanglian Dian Fang (Clove Coptis Eye Drop Formula).
Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, 14 seeds, crushed), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, removed roots), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, chopped, each 0.5 liang), Ruiren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen Amarum or Ruania, ground, 14 seeds), Wuzhu Qian (Wu Zhu Qian, ten coins).
Add 2 zhan of water and decoct until 60% remains. Filter through silk. Instill into the eyes frequently until recovery.
Formula for treating chronic wind-induced red eyes from long-term mineral drug use: Qingyan Dian Fang (Green Salt Eye Drop Formula).
Qingyan (Halitum, crushed 1 liang), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, peeled and core removed 2 liang, lightly stir-fried and ground into paste, mixed with a little water, pressed in silk cloth to extract oil, stored in half an eggshell).
Use a copper basin with a width of one chi. Place the oil and salt inside. Take a bundle of green willow branches (thickness of chopsticks), bind tightly. Cut the ends even and grind the mixture in the basin. When it becomes as thick as dense ink, dig a pit in the ground, place a tile at the bottom, put a goose-egg-sized amount of Shuai Ai (Artemisiae Argyi Folium, prepared) on the tile, and ignite it. Place the basin over the pit opening to fumigate with smoke. Once the fire burns out, the medicine is ready. Store in a non-porous container. Instill into the eyes every night before sleep, frequently, until recovery.
Formula for treating corneal opacity (Yi) caused by mineral drug eruption: Xionghuang San Dian Fang (Realgar Powder Eye Drop Formula).
Xionghuang (Realgar, crushed), Ganlan (Isatidis Folium or Baphicacanthis Cusia, dried leaf/stem, each 0.5 liang).
Pound and grind into powder. Apply a grain-of-rice-sized amount onto the opacity 3 to 5 times until recovery.
Formula for treating swollen and painful eyes unable to open: Zhurou Tie Fang (Pork Paste Application).
Take lean pork, slice thinly, and apply to the eyes. Replace when it warms up. Another method uses Pig Liver (Zigan) soaked well-water (Jinghua Shui) applied to the eyes.
