It is discussed that when stone medicine (Rushi) induces edema of the body, it is due to excessive intake of warm food and drink combined with a lack of physical labor, causing heat qi to accumulate and obstruct within the muscles without being able to disperse. There are also cases where external contraction of wind-dampness and internal retention of water interact with the pathogenic potential of the stone medicine, leading to stagnation and obstruction of qi, resulting in edema. However, edema caused by excessive warmth in diet and lack of labor manifests merely as body heat and flaccid swelling. In contrast, edema triggered by wind-dampness and water retention must be accompanied by vexation and fullness in the heart/chest region and painful, difficult urination; these conditions must not be confused.
Shengma Tang (Cimicifugae Decoction), suitable for initial stages of stone medicine-induced heat swelling with a sensation of obstruction:
Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, crushed and slightly stir-fried), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, blackened center removed), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi, pith removed and stir-fried), Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao), each 2 liang; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, honey-fried); Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, sliced and baked), 1 liang.
The above seven herbs are coarsely pounded and sieved. Take 3 qianbi per dose, decoct with one sheng of water until reduced to 70%, strain, and take warm.
Fuling Tang (Poria Decoction) for treating stone medicine-induced heat swelling:
Red Poria (Chifuling, black skin removed), Bamboo Leaves (Danzhuye, one handful chopped), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, honey-fried), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi, pith removed and stir-fried), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), Semen Pericarpii Ziziphi Spinosae (Ziren), each 1 liang; Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, crushed and stir-fried), 2 liang; Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, blackened center removed), 3 liang.
The above nine herbs are coarsely pounded and sieved. Take 3 qianbi per dose, decoct with one sheng of water until reduced to 70%, strain, and take warm.
Sheng Maidong Tang (Fresh Ophiopogonis Decoction) for treating Zhuru (Stalactite) medicine inducing chills and fever, chest oppression, facial edema, and vexing pain in hands and feet:
Fresh Ophiopogonis Radix (Sheng Maidong, heart removed and baked), 1 liang; Fermented Soybean (Chi), 1 he.
The above two herbs are coarsely pounded and sieved. Take 3 qianbi per dose, decoct with one sheng of water, add three stems of Scallion White (Congbai) smashed, decoct together until reduced to 60%, strain, and take warm on an empty stomach.
Shaoyao Tang (Peony Decoction) for treating stone medicine-induced hard heat swelling:
Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi, pith removed and stir-fried), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, crushed and stir-fried), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), each 2 liang; Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, sliced and baked), 1 liang.
The above five herbs are coarsely pounded and sieved. Take 3 qianbi per dose, decoct with one large sheng of water until reduced to 70%, strain, and take warm. Administer once on an empty stomach, before meals, and at noon.
Mutong Tang (Akebia Decoction) for treating water accumulation internally in patients taking stone medicine, presenting with hard edema of face, eyes, and knees, and difficult urination:
Akebiae Caulis (Mutong, crushed), Cortex Morus Radicis (Sangbaipi, honey-fried and crushed), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng, crushed and stir-fried), Red Paeoniae Radix (Chishaoyao), each 3 fen; Lepidii Semen (Tinglizi, stir-fried between papers), White Imperata Rhizome (Baimaogen, slightly stir-fried), each 1 liang.
The above six herbs are coarsely pounded and sieved. Take 5 qianbi per dose, decoct with one and a half sheng of water until reduced to 70%, strain, and take warm on an empty stomach. Twice daily.
Zisuzi Wan (Perilla Seed Pills) for treating patients taking stone medicine who suffer from external wind-dampness invasion and internal water retention, presenting with slight edema of body and face and difficult urination:
Perillae Fructus (Zisuzi, slightly stir-fried), Expressed Tangerine Peel (Chenpi, white pith removed and baked), Apricot Seed (Xingren, skin and tip removed, double-kernel seeds discarded and stir-fried), Red Poria (Chifuling, black skin removed), Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji), each 1 liang; Lepidii Semen (Tingli, stir-fried between papers), 3 fen.
The above six herbs are pounded into powder, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of small beans. Take 15 pills per dose, increasing up to 30 pills. Take on an empty stomach with decoction of Cortex Morus Radicis and Adzuki Bean (Chixiaodou). Twice daily.
Chifuling San (Red Poria Powder) for treating water accumulation internally in patients taking stone medicine, presenting with facial edema:
Red Poria (Chifuling, black skin removed), Iptomopsis Semen (Qianniuzi, stir-fried), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhike, pith removed and stir-fried), Expressed Tangerine Peel (Chenpi, white pith removed and stir-fried), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, honey-fried), each 3 fen.
The above five herbs are pounded into powder. Take 2 qianbi per dose, administered like tea, at any time.
Xiaoshi Tang (Niter Decoction) for treating stone medicine pathogenic potential rising upward, causing edema of head and face:
Natrii Sulfas (Xiaoshi), Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma (Bixie), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, forked parts removed), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, whiskers removed and stir-fried), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, crushed and stir-fried), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, honey-fried and crushed), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhike, pith removed and stir-fried), each 1 liang; Sanguisorbae Radix (Diyu, crushed), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, rhizome removed), Dragon Bone (Longgu), Haematitum (Daizhe), Cortex Morus Radicis (Sangbaipi, crushed and baked), each 1.5 liang; Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, rough bark removed), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, blackened center removed), each 0.5 liang; Pyri Folium (Shiwei, hairs removed), 2 liang.
The above fifteen herbs are coarsely pounded and sieved. Take 5 qianbi per dose, decoct with one and a half sheng of water, add three slices of Ginger (Shengjiang), decoct together until reduced to 80%, strain, and take warm.
Shiyanzi Wash (Stone Swallow Stone Rinse) for treating early-stage stone medicine heat swelling about to manifest:
Stone Swallow Stone (Shiyanzi), 7 pieces.
The above single herb is coarsely pounded and sieved. Boil with three sheng of water until reduced to two sheng. Frequently wash the abscessed or swollen area until healed.
For cases where stone medicine pathogenic potential induces whole-body edema preventing movement, this is due to prolonged sitting without activity. Additionally, alcohol consumption causes medicinal qi to stagnate within the skin, blocking blood vessels. Treatment:
Drink alcohol, wash with cold water, and engage in self-labor to recover. If unable to walk, have someone support and force movement until joints are smooth and free, but do not overdo it to avoid inducing fever. If fever occurs, wash again.
For cases where stone medicine pathogenic potential induces edema of limbs and face, this is due to warm diet and prolonged lack of physical labor, causing the medicine to separate from healthy qi. Treatment:
Drink hot wine, eat cold food, engage in self-labor, and bathe to recover.
For cases where stone medicine pathogenic potential induces heat in abdomen and back, with local redness and swelling resembling the size of a hand, cup, or plate:
Use cold stones to apply moxibustion-like warming/cooling therapy (ironing) to the heated areas.
