It is discussed that after childbirth, both Qi and Blood are deficient. The Heart Qi is insufficient, allowing Wind pathogen to invade the Hand-Shaoyin (Heart) meridian due to deficiency. This causes the Spirit (Shen) to float and scatter, resulting in frequent fright upon movement, palpitations, and immobility of the eyeballs; these are the clinical manifestations.
**Yuanzhi Tang (Polygalae Decoction)** for treating postpartum Heart deficiency with palpitations and restless sleep:
Radix Polygalae (Yuanzhi), Os Draconis (Longchi), Radix Ginseng (Renshen), Poria cum Radix Xylomi (Fushen, remove woody core), Ramulus Cinnamomi (Guizhi, remove rough bark), Radix Paeoniae Alba/Rubra (Shaoyao, chopped), Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin, chopped), Radix Ophiopogonis (Mendong, remove heart).
The above eight herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Each dose consists of 2 qianbi (approx. 6-9g depending on era standard, here kept as unit), boiled in one sheng (approx. 200ml) of water until reduced to 70%. Strain and take warm, at any time.
**Hupo San (Amber Powder)** for treating postpartum Heart Qi deficiency with palpitations and restlessness:
Amber (Hupo, ground 1 liang), Radix Ginseng (Renshen, 0.5 liang), Poria (Baifuling, remove black skin 1 liang), Radix Polygalae (Yuanzhi, remove heart), Prepared Radix Rehmanniae (Shudihuang, baked, 0.5 liang each).
The above seven herbs: First, crush and sieve five herbs into powder. Then mix with the ground Amber uniformly. Each dose is 2 qianbi, taken with decoction of Gold and Silver (Jinyintang, used as a vehicle/solvent traditionally or referring to metallic salts/minerals in some contexts, but often interpreted as a specific preparation method or vehicle in Song dynasty texts, here translated literally as "Gold and Silver soup/decoction"), warmed, taken on an empty stomach, at noon, and before bed.
**Renshen Tang (Ginseng Decoction)** for treating postpartum false fright and vague spirit:
Radix Ginseng (Renshen, chopped 1 liang), Radix Ophiopogonis (Mendong, remove heart 0.5 liang), Caulis Akebiae (Mutong, chopped), Radix Paeoniae (Shaoyao, 2 liang each), Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Zhigancao, roasted 1 liang), Cornu Saigae Tataricae (Lingyangjiao, implied by "Ling", text truncated).
The above six herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Use three sheng of water, first boil 3 liang of mutton meat to extract one sheng of juice. Remove the meat, add 3 qianbi of herb powder, and boil until reduced to 70%. Strain and take warm, at any time.
**Shaoyao Tang (Paeonia Decoction)** for treating postpartum Blood and Qi weakness, subcardiac palpitations, restless sleep, and hallucinations of seeing ghosts:
Radix Paeoniae Rubra (Chishaoyao, chopped 1 liang), Rhizoma Chuanxiong (Xiongnu), Cortex Moutan (Mudanpi), Radix Scrophulariae (Xuanshen), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui, sliced and baked), Radix Ginseng (Renshen, 0.5 liang each), Fructus Schisandrae (Wuweizi), Radix Ophiopogonis (Mendong, text truncated), Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Zhigancao, roasted 0.5 liang).
The above twelve herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Each dose is 3 qianbi, boiled in one sheng of water until reduced to 70%. Strain and take warm, at any time.
**Yangxin Tang (Sheep Heart Decoction)** for treating postpartum Blood deficiency with palpitations and unsettled mind:
Ovis/Capis Cor (Yangxin, one piece, boiled in five sheng of water to yield three sheng of juice), Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Zhigancao, roasted 1 liang), Radix Polygalae (Yuanzhi, remove heart 0.5 liang), Radix Saposhnikoviae (Fangfeng, remove forked roots 1 liang), Cornu Ovis/Arietis (Yangjiao, shaved into flakes 0.5 liang).
The above nine herbs: Coarsely crush eight herbs and sift. Each dose is 3 qianbi, boiled in one sheng of the prepared Sheep Heart juice until reduced to 70%. Strain and take warm, at any time.
**Mendong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction)** for treating postpartum Heart deficiency with palpitations and vagueness:
Radix Ophiopogonis (Mendong, remove heart and bake 0.5 liang), Prepared Radix Rehmanniae (Shudihuang, baked 1 liang), Poria (Baifuling, remove black skin), Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Zhigancao, roasted and chopped 1 liang each), Radix Paeoniae (Shaoyao, text truncated).
The above five herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Each dose is 3 qianbi, boiled in one sheng of water with five slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Freshum (Shengjiang) and one Jujube (Zao, broken open) until reduced to 70%. Strain and take warm, at any time.
**Renshen Tang (Ginseng Decoction)** for treating postpartum palpitations and unrest:
Radix Ginseng (Renshen, 1 liang), Radix Polygalae (Yuanzhi, remove heart 0.5 liang), Poria (Baifuling, remove black skin 2 liang), Radix Ophiopogonis (Mendong, remove heart and bake), Radix Paeoniae (Shaoyao, chopped, text truncated).
The above eight herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Each dose is 2 qianbi, with two slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Freshum (Shengjiang) and one broken Jujube (Zao), boiled in one sheng of water until reduced to 70%. Strain and take orally, at any time.
