Discussion states: Although cold damage diseases are divided into the three Yin and three Yang meridians, Taiyang disease is more common in the Yang meridians, and Shaoyin disease is more common in the Yin meridians, because these two meridians are exteriorly-interiorly related. Mingyang disease and Taoyin disease are quite rare, while Shaoyang disease and Jueyin disease are even rarer. However, a careful examination of ancient treatment methods reveals that Mingyang disease is often treated with purgation, while Shaoyin disease is often treated with warming. This is because the Mingyang meridian corresponds to the Stomach; when the Stomach is affected by pathogens, symptoms such as aversion to heat rather than cold, sweating, constipation, delirium, and tidal fever occur, which require purgation for recovery. In individuals with weak constitution and inherent deficiency, where the interstices (Couli) are loose, cold pathogens may bypass the three Yang meridians and directly invade the Shaoyin meridian, presenting Shaoyin syndrome. Since the Shaoyin meridian corresponds to the Kidney, when the Kidney is affected, symptoms include cold body, aversion to cold, cold limbs, thready and faint pulse, irritability with a desire only to sleep, or diarrhea with thirst. These conditions require warming for recovery. Although diseases of the three Yin meridians can generally be treated with warming methods, the ancients specifically detailed Shaoyin disease because it is particularly suitable for warming therapy.
