Discourse states: After the recovery from a cold damage disease, irritability may manifest as either empty irritability (Xu Fan) or grain irritability (Gu Fan). Empty irritability is caused by an excess of yang qi. Grain irritability occurs when food is consumed too early after the illness has subsided; the body's new weakness cannot withstand the qi of the food, leading to steaming heat in the stomach. If yin and yang are harmonized, empty irritability will resolve on its own; if dietary intake is reduced, grain irritability will heal.
For empty irritability presenting similarly to cold damage but without body pain or aversion to cold, where neither exterior nor interior methods of purgation are applicable, the Zhuye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction) is appropriate.
Ingredients: Zhu Ye (Half a handful), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed, 4 liang), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed with boiling water seven times, sliced smoothly, dried, 3 fen), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed, 2 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 0.5 liang).
The above six herbs are chopped into pieces the size of hemp seeds. Each dose consists of 5 qianbi (approx. 15-20g depending on era/standard, here kept as unit), boiled in 1.5 zhan (approx. 300ml) of water with over 100 grains of Jingmi (Rice, Oryza sativa var. japonica) and half a fen of Pao Sui (Fresh Ginger Root, smashed). Simmer until 80% remains, strain, and take warm.
For irritability preventing sleep after sweating treatment for cold damage, especially severe cases involving tossing and turning and inner restlessness (Ao Nao), Zhi Zi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction) is indicated. Similarly, for irritability and heat with chest oppression and pain following sweating or purgation, or for increased irritability after diarrhea with a soft epigastrium upon palpation (indicating empty irritability), this decoction is also suitable.
Ingredients: Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, 14 fruits, skin removed), Chi Xiao Dou (Fermented Soybean, 4 he).
The above two herbs are chopped into pieces the size of hemp seeds. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi, boiled in 1 zhan of water until 60% remains, strained, and taken warm.

The above five herbs are pounded and sifted into a powder. Each dose consists of 2 qianbi, taken with warm water.
