Commentary: Hongjiao (a disease characterized by swelling and weakness of the lower legs and feet) occurring after Shanghan (Cold Damage) arises because the patient's Kidney Meridian is originally deficient. Wind-dampness and toxic qi take advantage of this deficiency to invade and contend within the body. The Kidney governs the waist and feet; therefore, when pathogenic factors stagnate deeply, it results in weak and painful feet. Although the Shanghan has subsided, residual pathogenic heat remains. The wind-dampness and toxic qi contend with this heat, rushing upward to affect the Heart and Lungs. The clinical presentation includes vexation, fullness, and oppression in the chest and heart region, along with rapid and difficult breathing. In severe cases, this can lead to death. Upon pulse diagnosis, if the left Chi (Cun Kou) pulse is surging (Hong) and rapid (Shu), it indicates Hongjiao. After administering medication, if the pulse becomes deep (Chen) and slow (Huan), recovery is indicated.
