Commentary states: The waist is the external mansion of the Kidney. The Kidney governs water metabolism and receives and stores the essence of the five zang and six fu organs. After a Shanghan (Cold Damage) disease, essence and blood are insufficient, and Kidney Qi is weak. Wind pathogens invade the deficiency, lodging in the Foot Shaoyin (Kidney) meridian, lingering and pouring into the waist and feet, stagnating without dispersing. This leads to dysfunction of the joints and causes pain in the waist and feet. There are also cases of pre-existing wind-dampness lumbar pain from the Kidney meridian, which erupt after sweating or purgation due to the deficiency of meridian Qi. Each case should be treated according to its specific symptoms with appropriate formulas.
