Commentary states: Headache caused by cold damage (Shanghan) results from pathogenic factors ascending along the Yang meridians to attack the head. Therefore, conditions such as cold damage, wind strike, warm disease, and heat disease all present with headache symptoms, because headaches are generally Yang syndromes. Thus, Taiyang headache is invariably accompanied by fever and aversion to cold; Yangming headache presents without aversion to cold but with aversion to heat; Shaoyang headache features a wiry and fine pulse accompanied by fever. As for the three Yin meridians, they ascend from the feet to the chest and do not reach the head. Only the Jueyin meridian runs alongside the stomach, connects to the Liver, and links to the Gallbladder; it ascends along the throat to the nasopharynx (hangsang), connects to the eyes, and emerges at the forehead. Consequently, Zhang Zhongjing records only one type of Jueyin headache, which is treated with Wuzhuyu Tang (Evodia Decoction).
