Commentary states: The Kidney is the zang organ of water. The Bladder is the fu organ of body fluids; these two meridians are exteriorly-interiorly related. If pathogenic heat from cold damage invades the interior organs and flows into the Shaoyin meridian, the Kidney becomes diseased. Kidney water abhors dryness; when heat is excessive, dryness ensues, thus causing thirst and a desire to drink. Furthermore, pathogenic qi of cold damage cannot be eliminated unless through sweating, vomiting, or purging. If sweating, vomiting, or purging are excessively applied, body fluids are lost. When body fluids are significantly depleted, internal heat arises, which also causes thirst.
